... Think its okay to use your stuff? Honest to god.

New people arrived on yard - woman with 3 kids and one little pony. Was sweeping up and left my tools at the side while I took my barrow out... Came back and went to put my stuff away and thought 'where the heck have I left that?!' Searched high and low and guess who was using it! Actually stormed up to the them and took it off them with a severe growler. I was ready to say something but didn't know what! Just got a 'oh sorry' .... Text friend at yard and she said she found her mucking out stuff left in a heap and the prong broken off her fork, which was on its way out but now its goosed.

Actually can't believe it. In what other walk of life do you just go and take stuff that belongs to people?!

Arghh pregnant lady rage hormones !

Maybe she came from a yard where it was shared tools, or is new to horses and didn't realise.
I have been on many yards over 25 years and only one of those required me to buy my own, so possibly a genuine oversight on her part.

I really dislike horsey people that stomp about and growl at people, preggers or not.

Why not talk to them, like a normal human being, instead of snatching and grunting.

amymay- she's been on it for two weeks now , I've been pleasant to her, it would be polite to ask if she could use before just taking .

She's well aware where the communal yard tools are kept. They're very clear to see and YO has showed her if need be. Myself and friends tools are all well kept and kept in completely different places.

Runtoearth - snatch or whatever it's my stuff which I worked hard for and paid for and look after. I'm not having someone discard it once its broken and no use to them.

Using peoples things without asking is very rude, as is snatching things like a child - rise above it, talk to them or keep your things locked up?

I think snatch is the wrong interpretation of it... It was lifting and taking back what is mine. Given once I'd actually found my stuff it was sat at the other side of the yard with s*it left in the scooper. My things are locked up... It happened to be in the split seconds that I'd placed them down to take the wheelbarrow out that I came back and they were gone.

Oh dear, maybe a little perspective is needed. They are just tools, you had put them down and not locked them away so maybe they thought the tools were available to use. Whatever it didnt need the reaction it got, what is wrong with being polite?

Thank you :) I'm a happy and bubbly person, I'm not confrontational... I've experienced yards which people take things like that and you let it go or talk to them and they take no notice so next thing you know half your stuffs taken a walk. I also work hard and take pride in my stuff. At £30 a pop for a shavings fork , and the rest for brushes and shovels ... I cant afford for people to be taking them and ruining them either.

Holeymoley...I'm on your side!

If the new people have been shown where yard tools are and what they look like then I would also be irritated that they have used mine without asking....

If they had just asked 'can I use your broom' etc i wouldn't mind lending them..... But to just take them when you aren't around is just naughty!

All I can advise is to put your name on all tools!

Well, I'm with OP.
I've been on livery where you had to provide your own gear...some people just would not bother and would use everyone else's. So you'd turn up to find your barrow full of poo and your tools God knows where.
It's out of order...OP isn't there to provide equipment for others and if they're well aware of the yard protocol and where communal stuff is kept but insist on taking OPs stuff then what do they expect??

When does personal tack come to be everyone can use them. You buy your own stuff for you and you only and no other people can't use them with out your permission. Holly hocks can I come into your house and start treating it as my own.

If you are a cat, then yes. This is the way of cats.

Thank you , finally some people that are on the same wave length as me. Was beginning to think I should just leave some money on the feed room table for anyone to take and buy what they like with... ! Or even my car for that example - keys in the ignition.... But hold on it would be rude of me to stop them if they decided to drive off... !

I wasn't suggesting you give them your car keys or that you leave them money.

You can possibly discard my opinion as I have only ever been on a yard once, I shared my tool with two other girls to save them buying their own and it worked. We have the horses at home so I possibly don't understand these "yard politics". I don't mind sharing things though. It is annoying when people take things without asking, it does annoy me, but it doesn't unleash rage!

El_snowflakes - perhaps I am... Infact I know I am, but then there's a point with some people you need to over react for it not to happen again or turn into 'borrowing some feed' or 'borrowing boots etc' . She's obviously not been phased by friend speaking to her about using her tools so thought she'd make her way round to the next person. May I add it is a strict DIY yard altogether, you supply your own things. The communal area of tools is where anything which has been left over the years has been put. Don't get me wrong, they're starting out, as we all did at one point. When I was younger I chose to muck out with a pair of rubber gloves before I could afford a proper shavings fork instead of being rude enough to take things belonging to others and if I was desperate it was always with asking first and the equipment was returned in the same condition.

You would know - mad cat lady!

OP, it's frustrating when people move your stuff and use it without asking, yes. But if you were half as unpleasant as you came across in your op, you were probaby rather out of order too. Since they're new, and yards do seem to have very different rules, it might have worked better just to say "I'd rather you didn't borrow them, it's not how we work round here" politely. Growling and stomping around just makes an unpleasant atmosphere. Save that for any repeat occurences!

While I agree that they shouldn't have taken your tools, these people are new, so perhaps a friendly approach would have been better.
Makes for a pleasant atmosphere on the yard.

OP, Ive been inside a stable mucking out, with an empty barrow at the door, turn round with a forkful of muck and it's vanished! Eventually track it down and the person says, oh sorry were you using that? :confused3: Genius.

I buy my own stuff and use my own stuff, if someone wants to borrow it they can ask me, just as I would ask them if I wanted to borrow their things. Glad im not on a livery yard anymore, I hate them and their politics.

Hey, I am happy to give the cats to anyone for use as evil minions! Except the cats would hurt me if I tried...

I still use marigolds to muck out. Too annoying when poo falls through the prongs of the fork and the shavings don't. I bank up using the remains of a brush with about six bristles left. Husband offered to buy me some new tools for xmas. Don't know if I can risk letting him go shopping. He could injure himself again!

Tomorrow is another day, OP.

lol JFTD. over use of exclamation marks. Sure sign of diseased mind...

A sure sign of someone who wears his underpants on his head

One day I will take over the world with my cat army. Unfortunately, being cats, they will instantly turn on me and take power for themselves...

A, can't your husband order the tools online so no (limited?) risk of injury?! :D

Capriole, how'd you know I've got my knickers on my noggin?!

Ha! I left him at home alone today for half an hour whilst I walked the dog. He was so caught up in Facebook that he didn't notice he had lost the circulation in his hand beneath the cast! Came home and his fingers were er, zombie like...had to send him back to blimmin hospital!
