lol cullohill how long you been there? you arent a rep are you? I worked at a saddlers and the ideal reps were sooo funny. They would stay for pub lunch!
polar_bear my barnsby was a second hand job that had only been used for a couple of months as it was 'outdated' some people eh more money than sense, so I agree the older ones seemed to be more comfy!
I had an albion K2 for my last horse and loved it, but when I was looking for a saddle for my youngster I fell in love with a WOW and am now saving the pennies to buy one
The best saddle I have ever sat on was a 'Toptani', its likely that they can only be found in museums now
. They were designed by Count Toptani and were absolutely comfie for horse and rider in all the disciplines. My now favourite is my own saddle which is a 'Pariani' and was hand made for me
What makes of saddles, and which manufacturer are quite different questions. Many well known brands are made under licence at quite anonymous manufacturing facilities.
I have a favourite manufacturer, but my favourite brand at the moment is Silhouette, for their really good show saddles.
Lee Broadway - North of England he makes my saddles and they are brillant as they are made to measure for the horse and myself and given that he makes them made to measure they are cheaper that those "off the peg"
Barnsby and Ideal I love. Also liked sitting in a Jaguar mono flap and equipe, but not sure would buy one for my horse. He is definitely a Barnsby or Ideal horse from what have found so far!!
Best I have sat in (I'm a groom so I've sat in a fair few!) are Ideals and Wows. If I needed a new saddle I'd get an Ideal or a Wow. I loathe Albions, they are lovely but are incredibly uncomfortable. I also hate Thorowgoods and refuse to ride anything with a Thorowgood Maxam saddle as they are so goddamned awful. For cheap and cheerful synthetic I go for Wintec, I have two of them for my horse.
From what I've sat in so far I'd personally like a deep-seated, large-knee blocked Wow dressage saddle, and I love the look of the Ideal Impala jump saddle.
Now all I need is a horse to put these saddles on!
My beloved saddle was made by John Kington, who is based just up the road from me. That has definitely got to be the favorite!
More generically though I like the Saddle Company saddles
I also got Kingtons to make my TB a saddle...they fitted the tree to her first...then built a saddle around it. It's so comfortable, and fits her so well.
Interestingly, a study at a well known local college using pressure pads found that Kington's were the best for weight distribution....
I need to ask them to make one for the Shire x beastie.
