After a hideous, traumatic morning with my poor mare, and seeing clearly how much comfort she gained from having me in sight as the slaughter man did his job, I would just like to say that if anyone in the south east area is facing this situation and needs someone to be with them, I am volunteering.
I have been lucky that in a lifetime of having horses I have only now had to be there for one of my own, although I have been present for others. The slaughter man didn't want me there but as I moved away she started to panic, so I stood as close as I was allowed and talked to her and she visibly relaxed, and it just brought it home to me how important it was for her.
