When at shows...

never never never

I dont mind if other people do, so long as they are with them and theres enough room.

It drives me nuts when the next door person does it and they're parked too close anyway and you have a horses bum practically in the tack locker!

lots of reasons why i wont -

-all mine would all freak out and escape!
-if they scratched the lorry paintwork i would in for it BIG time
-on the lorry theres plenty of room to tack up / stud up / whatever so i dont need to.

That's the thing i can tack up, stood up, put all boots on and bandage everything whilst on lorry,I don't find it awkward at all and when you have your horses trained its so much easier!! have done it a trailer to with 1 horse on before.

My friends horse broke its neckafter pulling back off a lorry, outs me off for my life!

PS- I'm a sad case who either stays with the horse at the trailer as much as possible (therefore maximising the time she has outside of it rather than cooped up inside) or takes her for a wander with me! (obviously we wander where it's not an issue, we don't go round the tradestands together etc!
wink.gif
Particularly after xc to make sure she stretches off fine before travelling home.)

I don't tie my pony up, as soon as hes off he has to go! He can also untie himself and snap string, so wouldn't trust him tied up. My TB on the other hand is a sweetie and doesn't care where hes left! But would never leave him tied up without anyone with him just in case.

I always tack up outside if its not raining and/or its not dark!!!

I also leave him unattended with a haynet whilst i walk courses etc, especially if he has studs in. Sometimes get odd looks but i have always done this and have never had a problem.

He is very quiet and well behaved, will stand anywhere there is food. i think it is much much nicer for them to stand out in the open air than in a box.

I do it with judgement though...if i arrive at an event and go straight off to walk course i leave him on with the ramp open, or will put him away between phases if its raining or we're parked somewhere awkward.

Always do - it's not just an eventer thing, endurance folk pretty much all tie up outside their trailers or boxes. I'll unload as soon as I arrive - tie up him, go and check in with secretary then go back and walk him round a bit to loosen up, then go and vet, then tie back to the trailer and tack up. After we've finished once he's cooled off and seen the vet I will tie him back to the trailer whilst I go and get a drink and collect my results/mastercard. Most endurance horses are so used to it that you very rarely see any horse get loose - and when it does happen it's almost always a pleasure rider rather than an affiliated member.

The only time we don't tie up outside trailer or box is if we're overnighting - then the horse will be left in an electric fence corral, either next to trailer or in a specially roped off area. The big advantage of corralling is that the horse can mooch around, helping to prevent him stiffening up after the competition.

In the States endurance horses are often tied to the trailers all night - they have these over head, swinging tie booms that, in theory, mean the horse can move about, lie down, etc but not get tangled in the rope.

Me too! My mum took her to buy an ice cream at the Bath RC ODE last year and had to prevent her sticking her head in the ice cream van

and then she tried to follow me into the photographers tent to look at her pics. We took it in turns to hold her so the other could browse.

Surely a horse could do that if tied up for the farrier, tied up in its stable etc? Don't see how being on the side of a lorry is any different. Obviously don't leave unsupervised and with a great length of rope

Bsja rules say you are not allowed to tie up to lorries/trailers at shows.

[/ QUOTE ]

I dont care, I always tie my horse up outside the trailer whether at a BSJA / BE / unaffiliated event. My horses comfort is the most important thing.

and i would never ever leave a horse unattended and tied to the lorry and think people that do are reckless beyond belief.

[/ QUOTE ]

Reckless? Reckless would be leaving a horse I used to have in a trailer - he would have destroyed it within minutes, yet outside he stood beautifully. If Im on my own at an event then yes I do leave my horse while I go and get my number etc. and never had any problems.

Does it??? I've never noticed that

I tie ban up outside the lorry with a haynet but tbh he has a sensible head and I weaken the string so should he panic it would break.

It's each to their own as long as people are sensible about it, L will be kept on the lorry for his first few outings providing he doesn't thrash about like a loon!

i tack up tied to my lorry every time at bsja shows for the past how ever many years and noone has ever said anything to me??? or my friend who often has up to 5 tied up at a time??? they are never unattended though only ever tied up for tacking up/untacking

Those that tack up in a trailer must have very very skinny horses

or equitreks!

or no partition! There is no way I am fitting in that gap with mine!

Yep, always tie up to side of lorry.

Its safer to tie up, I can do studs properly and tack him up. Its too difficult to do in the lorry as usually more than one horse and I tack up on my own.

Horse is trained to tie up to lorry - and its much easier for me to tack up and deal with

Tie up, and if it's my sister competing my horse is so well-behaved if you leave him with a haynet and some water he will just stand and watch everyone- if we'll be gone for a while we tell people who are about, and usually stay within running distance. With Reggie we wouldn't leave him at all because he's not got any comp experience and could quite easily be spooked by something or worried whether he was on or off the lorry.

Think they may say you can't leave a horse unattended whilst tied to a lorry.

On the other side of the coin. I have heard of someone being killed whilst tacking up in a lorry. The horse freaked and she didn't have room to get out of the way.

I never tie up to the trailer, its a pain but I've gotten very good at roping in passers by to hold when putting studs etc in. If I had a lorry I would but only when I'm around I wouldnt leave her for any length of time.

I'm fortunate enough to have a trailer without the partition in so I have plenty space to move around and tack up.

I'm (maybe) irrationally frightened of one of the boys either breaking free and running off into the distance/potential accident or somebody just coming up, undoing the rope and taking him!! (and yes I know that could also happen in the trailor but it's quicker and easier outside!)

I know lots of unaff venues also have it in their rules that horses must not be left outside too.

I don't understand how people can tack up if you are in a trailer with 2 horses?! Have always tied up outside trailer, never unattended, put back in if we are wandering off, but I don't understand the deal. If the horses are well behaved, tied to string and are supervised, what is the problem.

Would love to have a large expensive lorry, but sadly not possible

^^^ eeeeexactly.
When we only have the TB in the trailer, I do the majority in the trailer and just move the partition, as he can be a bit of a fidget when tied up outside alone. When my friend brings her horse too, we do it all outside. Don't see how it's possible to tack up in a partitioned trailer with two in
confused.gif

When using lorry at BE or BSJA we tack up outside unless there's less than two horses.

I've left mine tied up at pretty much every venue i've ever been to and never been told not to, including BD, BE and BSJA. I have also never had a problem with any of my horses.

I'd much rather them out in the air and able to move about a bit. I hate seeing horses stuck on boxes all day.

Depends on the weather!

If it's fine and there's plenty of space then as there are usually several of us we tie up to the lorry and there's always someone left to oversee the nags. If the weather's dreadful then I'll leave them on the lorry for as long as possible. It is a nightmare trying to get three stressy teenagers all tacking up at the same time on a lorry - and not an experience I'd care to repeat, especially as I was trying to plait for two of them.

))teens that won't get out of bed in time to plait their own flipping ponies((

I was also particularly annoyed at one place where we were all told that there was no room to tie up and everything was to be done on the lorry to find that the person next to me had unloaded and tied up three ponies in a space slightly shorter than the ponies with the result that the largest pony was sitting on my new box - and dented it and damaged the rubbing strip. Then one of the bloody children dragged it's stirrup down my paintwork.

On the occasions I'm lucky enough to have a lift to somewhere, I do tie up to the side of the lorry. It's not really any different from tying up to a ring in the yard, as far as my pony is concerned. I'd leave him for short periods too, though ask someone who seems to be chilling in a lawn-chair at another lorry just to keep an eye on him.

Usually, I hack to "parties", and I'm by myself, so I have to tie him up somewhere to check in, etc. I take his breakaway headcollar, and tie him to a fence or similar. At the local gymkhana, the secretary etc. were in a big lorry in the middle of the field, so I just parked the pony beside that (brought a haynet over for him). He just eats and sleeps.

Get to event, leave horse in lorry with back down.

Get back, unload tack up off to dressage and then generally I only have a about 50 minutes between each event so leave her off! I could tack her up in the box but the only thing on her mind then is getting out of the box, therefore squishing me in the process. Much calmer out of the box so seems logical to me!

tying up to tack up/stud up etc= think is fine-after all YOU are there.
but leaving them tied up whilst you go and get numbers/book in/declare.....i think its irresponsible TBH, all it takes it something to upset your horse, for it to pull back and go charging round the car park, to upset other horses, run in to horses and people and generally be a total menace.sorry but i see this all the time and its always some poor other bugger that has to catch the loose horse and sort out the chaos it has left in its wake.

iv seen loose horse run in to pushchairs with kids in, run people over, run flat out in to other horses, cause damage to lorries etc etc. everyone always says oh mine would NEVER do that, but i bet the owner of above horse would have said that too! if its on the lorry at least it cant injure anyone elses horses/relatives/property.
i wish leaving horse tied up unattended was prohibited at all shows TBH. no doubt this wont be popular but i honestly think its a huge safety issue, and if your horse wont stand on the lorry/trailer-teach it to! dont put other people in danger!
