When buying a horse do you have a colour choice?!!!

Colour is not a deciding factor for me, it has to be the right horse. However in a magical ideal world where all horses were lovely and the right price and sound - It would have to be a chestnut or black with 4 white socks and a blaze. I have a skewbald and cremello - terribly hard work to keep looking nice, particularly for winter outings. I also have a dark palamino. She is a great colour end never shows the dirt.

Chestnut is my fave (dont mind if they are mares either). Then dun, then grey, then black, then coloured. Bay is too common (runs and hides before other forum members can remotely zap her computer). I have a bay by the way.....

i do not have a problems with any colour of horse but as i work full-time as have limited time, i only looked at easy colours to keep clean.
In saying that if the right horse turned up and it was just what i wanted with proven record, i would buy lighter colour and have to put up with cleaning all the time.

Until recently no. I then decided I just had to have a piebald gypsy cob mare like the one I had on loan and ended up with a skewbald colt - right breed though.

To be honest there isn't a colour I don't like, apart from not so keen on cremellos.

I love duns (which Fudge is), chestnuts (which Lady is), blacks, roans and those with spots expecially blanket or lepard spots. Not big on a lot of bay's although some have really nice colouring, wouldn't be keen on buying a skewbald or piebald or a grey as I don't really like the colours but if the horses temperment and ability is what I was looking for the colour wouldn't put me off.

NOT GREY

ORANGE all the way, i'm a sucker for a chestnut.
Really dark bay looks lovely in the summer
Would love a really good spotted, but now any colour would do as long as it was the right horse
Don't do greys, but going to look at one soon. Watch it be right for me and will have to get used to keeping it looking clean

I wouldn't not buy a horse because of its colour, but I do like colours that are different, or a coloured because they're markings are pretty much unique.

I love chestnuts (probably because my pony was chestnut and then my mum's horse was chestnut). I'm also looking around for a horse at the moment and must say that chestnuts are again in the front of my mind although I did see a gorgeous bay the other day on the internet (had a blze though and partial to them too!) but was 16.3hh and I know my limit is about 16.1hh as I'm an ickle 5ft nothing.

I love coloureds and greys, but when i was looking for a new horse i didnt want a grey because of keeping them clean and i didnt want a mare .....but hey guess what.....i got a grey mare!
I wouldnt rule anything out because of colour but yeah there are colours that im not fond of having like a chestnut or strawberry roan.

Both mine have been coloureds, and am a coloured fan! But think that is because both MY horses have been coloured! Like Liver chestnuts, Blacks, Greys.... anything really! But am a coloured fan....

In an ideal world I would love a liver chestnut however I wouldn't go out looking for one specifically.
I would look at bay/chestnut/grey/black/coloured/dun but wouldn't even go and view a palamino or appoloosa (sp?)

Would never be bothered by colour when looking for a horse, but do love bays and chestnuts - especially with lots of white! My welshie is black and love that too - so shiny!

I wouldn't have another grey after my old pony had melanomas - I would be paranoid about every lump & bump.

Apart from that I wouldn't rule out anything purely on colour. I'm not keen on appaloosas/spotteds or coloureds but if it was the right horse then I'd still have it. I've got a chestnut (proper red-head rather than orange) & a nice rich bay - neither were chosen for colour but because I thought they were nice people.

When I was looking for another horse last year I really wanted a nice skewbald or piebald with not too much white - definitely not grey. After all, you're investing so much in them that you may as well have what you really want ?

Turned out that most of the horses I tried were GREY and I've ended up with a dark bay - mind you, have always loved dark bay / black horses too. But still feel wistful when I see a nice coloured horse advertised!

When it comes down to it, a good horse is never a bad colour, as they say.

Whenever I'm looking I always say that I'd rather not have a grey but if the perfect horse came up and it was grey then so be it. My first 3 horses were all greys, then a dark bay, then a bright bay and then another bright bay. We have also had 2 coloured, 2 chestnuts, and 2 more bays. I would really like a dun but I think bay is a pretty good colour, it hides both dirt and dust pretty well

The only colour I would never have is a an ugly spotty one. Some spotty horses are fine but I don't like pink membranes round the eyes and nose, or pink bottoms!

Greys all the way!!! I love them so much and when fantasy shopping they are the only ones that catch my eyes and coloureds too. But if I was buying and a bay or chestnut caught my eye then I know it would be special and worth having a look at.

Hmmm, tricky one. If you REALLY have your heart set on a grey, then I guess you should stick to your guns, BUT if you have the choice of a perfect horse in 'boring bay' or a beautiful grey that is a total bitch, you may reconsider your requirements! I'd say see a variety & see what comes up - my guess, you'll get bored with a problem horse far faster than a non-grey horse.

I dont go specifically to get a specific coloured horse, but of course everybody has their favourites! I dont however like chestnuts or spotties. I also love greys, simply because Ive never had a bad one!! But have had bays / blacks etc. I do find bays SOOOO pratical!!!!

nope! sure it would have been nice to have an unusual coloured horse but when the perfect BAY horse came along i couldnt hold that againts him! along as it does the job it could be purple for all i care!
xx

I like all colours except not over keen on Chestnuts but would have one if it was nice in every other respect. I dont like a lot of white marking (particularly on the face).
