I'm finally moving my girls up to the village where I live but I have to wait until the YO has got her hay in - so I need an idea of when that will be so I can get ready.....
I also spoke to a friend this weekend, and hers is also in. Some people have been having difficulty cutting due to the recent rain, but mine was fortunately cut prior to this.
so depends on the weather, after previous years we decided to do it as soon as weather was nice enough as we don't need it to be really thick as we always have spare,
it was done 3rd week of june, last year was end of aug
We haven't had 2 consecutive days without rain since early June, which was just to soon to cut the hay. I suspect it will be late August before we get ours if the weather forecast is anything to go on.
I have 23 big bales in so far - but expect to get another 90 but have to wait for decent weather - it is ready now but weather is against us. Last year I made it in 1st week September - and it was suprisingly good.
Should all be done by now but we still have about 40 acres to do and looks like we're in for another wet week! We did get some done early june so 500 bales in the barn already. When we cut depends on the weather and how much growth there is. The field we did early had not been grazed for a while where as some had horses on it til the end of April and some connot be cut before July due to it being on one of those stewardship schemes.
Hijacking this post a bit, those who have cut hay really late in the past, what sort of crop did you get? I am not too bothered if it is not the best quality as I have fatties, but worried it will be very dusty.
If it has been grazed (horses on it until April, then chain harrowed to spread poo and left to grow) then it should not be too bad but if it hasn't ( like some we've got, not been grazed for 2 years) it tends to get brown at the roots. The main spoiler is rain on it after it has been cut and this can make it dusty. Late cut hay will not be as nutritious and would be better for fatties.
