Just had another call from the vets and she has been out for 4.5 hours and managed to pass a few poops so she has been given a sloppy mash. Still not out of the woods but hopefully things are looking up.

The rehab yard said the only thing they can think of is that she has eaten some of her straw bed as she has her hay on the floor and drags it into her bed.

Hope she continues to improve! One of mine once had a bad impaction colic from eating straw & avoided surgery by the skin of his teeth. Wasn't allowed near straw again, never colicked again & I think he must be 22 or 23 now. (Sold but I know his new owner.)

Just rang my vets as I’ve not had an update today and they’re happy with her. They’ve started her back with some little bits of hay with the hope that they can slowly refeed tomorrow with an aim to discharge her on Wednesday.

Still very much in two minds about where she will be going to on Wednesday. There’s pros and cons to both.

I obviously feel anxious about taking her back to the rehab yard in case she colics again. There was something in that set up that made her colic in the first place but if it is just as simple as her eating the straw then that’s fixable. Plus they will have more time to reintroduce work as and when she is up to it and even do the other therapies that she’s been having.

If she comes home, I’ll have more control over her but I’ll definitely worry about her from the moment I leave in the evening until I get the she’s fine message in the morning and then again until I go up again. I can’t really make multiple trips.

It’s so hard. I tried to ask the vet but she was non-committal - I guess in case she says one thing and we get another colic episode

Can you get a Reolink camera put up? We’ve all got them up the yard I’m on and I know one lady who sets her alarm in the middle of the night to check on her elderly Shetland who had 2 colic operations a couple of years ago (although I probably wouldn’t go that far!). We run ours off a Giffgaff SIM card.

Could you chose a different rehab yard that doesn't bed down on straw or ask rehab yard to bed her on shavings.

Is she in box rest? It is more common for colics to occur for horses who are not moving around much.

That is an option if she comes home. It’s just affording it that’s the problem.

So I think they also do shavings or I am happy to drop off some bales of Heavenly Bedding (which is what I use) but then again that’s a chopped straw and shavings mix so is that “allowed”?

No, she isn’t. She is in for rehabbing kissing spine so she’s out similar hours to at home (8-3/4ish) and she has been exercised (not ridden) 6 days a week so she is getting plenty of movement.

It is strange that she ate the straw bed when she had hay available are you sure the rehab yard are giving enough hay or hay that she will eat?

How much longer does she have at rehab?

I don't think it's necessarily something in the set up. Horses sometimes just colic, no reason or change it just happens.

That’s my thinking too. If she comes home, I’ll be up as much as possible but it won’t be much more than 3 hours a day. Plus I don’t trust anyone at my yard to tell me if she is colicking.
I think I would put her on the rehab yard and supply them with her usual bedding.

You could also request she has soaked hay it will definitely help stop an impaction.

One of mine moved to a friend’s yard for ease of rehab some years ago. Shavings bed. Same haylage as at home. Colic within 48 hours. Vet hospital etc. She had ulcers, and vets said it was just the stress of the injury combined with the move, she didn’t drink enough and then bam off she went. Went back there after hospital and was fine.

Sometimes it is just stress and being somewhere different.
