Frank has developed a serious case of sunburn on his noggin, in October!, we do have common hogweed but vet thinks seems unlikely given the quantity (it's shooting). Bloods gone for liver test too but he doesn't seem like a horse in liver crisis :p.


Vet was actually coming to check soundness before we continued to up his hacking, thankfully he's very happy with that bit!
 
Pics? Mine had lymphocystic vasculitis a few years ago, wasn't pleasant and we never found what caused it, went from two 5p sized scabs to whole legs and parts of muzzle in the space of 48hrs.
 
saw your pic on FB. Is he sore? Dear, sweet horses. Always finding new and interesting ways to challenge us.
 
It is just on muzzle, white bits only so ok the other side which is more pigmented, though obviously legs are hairy.

I think it looks worse today tbh milliepops? Literally came up during the day on Saturday in all that rain as even Mum would have spotted it before that. Yes it is very sore :( got some steroid cream for the time being and in during day/won't get any fresh grazing to see if we can get on top of it. I've got to go back to wilts today though.
I guess at least he picked when vet was coming anyway :p, did ring vet and warn him before he came (and please bring some cream!)
 
I had something that looked identical years ago on a white faced Arab. Turned out that his grazing had a lot of wort plants in it, and that causes photosensitivity.
 
Poor chap! that does look sore. Awkward place to keep cream on too, I always end up wearing whatever suncream I put on my 2 white muzzles :o

Funny how things pop up so quickly, Kira has got weepy scabs on one side of her body overnight but can't find any reason for it, she isn't remotely bothered by them.
 
No wort in field + vet said they usually only get wort cases earlier in the year as it has died back by now, tends to be a June thing (we and the vet were walking round the paddock earlier to check if anything likely). He moved about 4/5 weeks ago but been strip grazed so not massive access to anything at any one time.

Frank is the weepy scab king (sudocreme and sulphur sort them ;) ) always has, never completely resolved them but if treated go in a day or so! - much better clipped.

He has only have very slight sunburn previously, never anything like this. The cream is more a gel, going for the squirt it on then pin head down while spread method, have wished mum luck as time goes on and suggested she can let him off teeth cleaning for a bit (she has already declared him too high maintenance for retirement livery!)
 
Buttercup photosensitivity?

That type of photosensitivity, I would definitely check liver enzymes. The liver can be quite "off" before they become symptomatic :/
 
yup should get liver result letter today.

We have a few old buttercup bits but very little and he is used to living with lots of them without incident so I don't think they are the culprit in this instance.
 
No :(, pretty much all home made either on livery with me where he has been the last 3 years or home at mum more recently. No phonecall this pm so will ring in morning for liver results.
 
So vet rang late, might be liver, need more tests so blood been sent off tonight so have to wait for them tomorrow or Monday but vet still not convinced as he seems so well, I rode him today and he was storming, not at all flat.
Vet asked the ragwort question too but no, and nothing else we can think off that he might have had access to different since he moved home and obviously Mum's mare been living there last 3 years without him fine. I'll update if/when I know more.
 
vet hasn't ruled out the hogweed just thinks it's unlikely because there isn't masses for him to have eaten enough to photosensitise plus he doesn't think he has seen it happen much (we are talking photosensitisation from ingestion not contact), and common hogweed not giant.- Apparently it is quite nice gently fried!
 
Common hogweed can still burn though. People often think it's only the giant one that can do damage, it's both, but obviously that's being in contact with it, not eating it.

It's def not a contact thing, the other side of his nose is grey and fine, it is restricted only to white bits therefore must be something internal.
 
Daft thought at this time of year - but buttercups? Try calendular oil on it - it's marigold, good for soft tissue healing, it might help.

It wasnt that long ago when i was on here about problem number 535 with Bailey. He had what i knew was'nt mud fever on his legs and what i suspected was photo sensitivity. turned out it wad a bacterial infection due to dirty water that had held in his exercise bandages after going thru a water complex on a fun ride.Could it possibly be that? It mimicked Franks nose in that it was wet crusty sebum. a steroid injection and an antibiotic injection put it right as well as ten days of washing the affected area in selenium sulphide and applying mud fever cream. might it be a bacterial infection - possibly from putting his nose in dirty water in a puddle or from wet grass as we have had some rain lately? i thought i'd mention it anyway : might be a long shot. Hope he is better soon Ester. i know clover can cause sensitivity along with ataxia if its red clover: it contains cyanide.

My boy had some spots on his nose which i thought was a bit random. Nothing in the fields, so must have been just a bit of UV idk
 
Thanks AC, yes the reason we (well vet) don't think either contact dermitis or 'plain' infection for some reason is the absolute delineation to the non pigmented areas. It is just a really odd time of year mostly for there being any plants about that could trigger it as much as the lack of sun!
No puddles either, ground pretty rock hard at our still, and not enough grass access to be damp in dew.

Equi random spots has been all he has managed before but not in october.

My gut thinks we are looking at a liver issue even if we can't identify why although obviously hoping otherwise. The only other possibility that I can think of that I do want to check with the vet is we did treat for cancer 4 odd years ago, maybe that did spread pre treatment and we didn't get away with it.
 
Agh, now I've seen the pics I'm sure my sisters horse has something similar atm on a little bit of his nose. He does get buttercup photosensitivity in summer if left on the field with loads of them but I thought it odd atm.

I'll have to ask if they've noticed it change....
 
This went from nothing to this in 12ish hours Saturday/Saturday night as they come in for feeds twice a day and given his general random scabbiness we do keep an eye on him so mum would have spotted. I saw it Sunday pm, it was worse again Monday morning.
 
Looks and sounds like what Kia had. Steroid cream and strict routine cleared it. He had it on his legs and was very very lame due to the pain of his skin cracking and peeling off :(
 
This was my pony one day last month....completely out of the blue, never happened before in 18 yrs of owning her. Happened overnight.

After searching her field I found a few patches of St Johns Wort that I'd missed before. Vet took bloods which all came back clear and once treated it cleared up very quickly.

Just an update, liver tests on the high side/borderline still normal/not a reason to panic so not in liver crisis :D. but possibly something upset it a bit.
couple of weeks of liver tonic, not allowing access to new grazing and will retest and see how doing then.

Tentatively good news though for the time being though and fingers crossed like your chap HP!, nose starting to look better by all counts too :). I will make sure to do another field check next weekend when I am back.
