Do they always stay until you have finished?

I've only ever had one sedated by the vet, which was a hunting livery last year. The vet was very helpful, stuffed her ears with cotton wool and shielded her eye so she couldn't see, while I whizzed round clipping as fast as possible

Same horse needs clipping this afternoon, owner has booked vet - just wondering whether to expect the same service this year!!

I clip a friend’s horse and the vet stays for the majority of the clip and once they are sure the horse wont wake up before you finished they leave.

Yes my vet would stay until ive finished. Last year he started to come round so he had to give him more. Also the vet should stay to monitor the state of the animal while under etc etc.

Mine don't need sedating for clipping but one gets sedated for the dentist & vet leaves as soon as he's gone under. Although maybe that is because he knows & trusts the dentist.

Depends on the individual vet, but generally they are supposed to stay for the majority of the sedation, given that the horse is technically under anaesthetic. If they left and the horse reacted and/or collapsed then they would be held accountable and negligent. However, having said that, after ~1/2hour then you can be pretty certain nothing bad will happen except it waking up prematurely!

I had it done yesterday (for sheath cleaning, particularly smegma bean removal which has caused him problems in the past). The vet stayed long enough to check the ACP was working - i.e, it was starting to hang out (he's a very shy boy unfortunately) and when he was satisfied it was going to work he went and left me to get on with it.

<Mine sedated pony and was helpful in stuffing ears with cotton wool checking she was under then she left but with instructions to call her back if there were any problems (which so far there never have been)

the one time mine was sedated to clip the vet gave him the jab, stood there, realised my stong willed horse would need more, gave him a second jab and vanish to where ever he was off to next. I cant imagine any of the vets i use ever staying whilst i clipped if the horse was sedated at all.

if i clipping a vet sedated horse i ask vet to wait til head done , elbows and stifles. if all ok then i keep going and vet leaves. some do need a top up of dope but better a bigger dose first than topped up. i also record level of dope given (domo torb and acp) and whether enugh or more req next time. i never clip a sedated horse without some one else around as no dope is 100% reliable and adrenaline can overcome a lot of dope!!
