Stan is now just over 5 months old, and the plan (as suggested by the vets) is to have him castrated at 6 months. He'll be 6 months on 16 August and we go on holiday for a week exactly 2 weeks later. He will be coming on holiday with us, so it's his holiday too - lots of walks, trips to the pub and visits to the beach, so don't really want him to be wearing the cone of shame, or feeling sore.

Sooooo....do we wait and have it done when we get back (so he'll be heading for 7 months old), or do it on/just after the 16th August?? Does it actually matter if he is closer to 7 months old?

My dog was right as rain in two weeks even though his operation was slightly more invasive (he was scoped up his unmentionables at the same time while he was under) so I don't think you should have a problem.

Mine came home from the operation, no cone of shame, and proceded to lie on his belly with his legs out behind so his stitches were on the floor. He never had any adverse effects at all. Even to the g a. I would go with it, get him done as planned then take him on holiday. He will be fine i am sure

if they are both plums are down!! then you could get him done a little earlier, then he has a little more time before his holiday. tho most dogs bounce back very quickly and it will be you that struggles to keep the exercise reduced for the first couple of days.

I totally disagree with neutering a male dog before 10 months,or a female before it`s first season. It leads to unreversable problems later on in the dog`s life.

I would absoloutely not have him done before you go on holiday.
Neutering him three weeks later will make no difference whatsoever.
If he was to get an infection (rare but do occur) or complication e.g hernia then that could potentially spoil your/his holiday.
It will make no difference to have waited and then if any complications do arrive, your not worried about holiday too

If he is a large breed I wouldn't neuter before 12 months old due to behavioural and growth/development problems. I have an immature labrador who is now 8 months old and only really learning to cock his leg regularly now - i will not consider neutering him for another 6 months at least.

this is an excellent website and an interesting read...

I am another that would advise doing it after holidays due to potential problems too.
