Hi

I've had all sorts of horses over the past 30 odd years but this is the first coloured show cob we've had. She was clipped out and hogged when we bought her last May but as my daughter just wanted to get to know her, build up a partnership and have fun without showing we left her to grow out. She's currently in work but wintering out wearing a turnout rug. Our first show is 3rd March so I'm wondering when the best time would be to hog and take her feathers off. Should I forget the March show and wait for a couple of months before removing her legs and mane? Does anyone else have a cob living out who is trimmed up all year?

They really need to be done a day or two before each show to look at their best, a cob should be fine without the protection of the hairy bits by March, you can then keep on top of it throughout the season.
You will get to know your own horse and how quickly the mane grows out, I used to do my cob the day before every show for the best results, he was grey so it helped remove any stains at the same time;).

Thanks -be positive-, that sounds as though once shows are over in September we can leave her again over the winter to 'wool up'. We don't hunt over the winter/attend shows so don't need to keep ultra smart, just a blanket clip to help with the sweaty bits.

They quickly return to the natural look so ideal to leave over the winter, if you do suddenly decide to go out mid winter it would not hurt to take it off again as long as they are rugged. Enjoy the showing and hope for a summer so they actually happen this year:)

Deciding when to clip will usually depend on how much bone your horse has. Some horses have an optimum clipping time of 8-10 days (if they don't have much bone and the hair regrowth looks better) whereas others have plenty and therefore can be trimmed the day before.

The same with the mane - some can be trimmed the day before and others a week before. You have to get to know your horse and what looks best!

I take everything off except mane pretty much as soon as its light past half four :)

This year she got a blanket clip with legs off and now shes got a hunter clip as my little clippers needed servicing. She will be getting done again in the next few weeks :)
