First time in here.. hope you can be patient with a rather rambling post

My poor old collie cross was put to sleep 3 weeks ago at nearly 17yrs. I think I will get another dog but maybe not for a few months, but that hasn't stopped me thinking about what sort and where from.
So I am hoping some of you good people will help with a couple of queries:
Do you think the spring is a good time to get a new dog, rather than rushing into it now just after Christmas, although I am thinking lots of dogs seem to need re-homing after Christmas?
I would definitely want a rescue dog again, so any suggestions in the Wiltshire area would help. I know about the Bath RSPCA and the Dogs Trust, but anywhere else?
We have a rescue greyhound bitch, nearly 5yrs, and whilst she's lovely in her own way, she has always been more OHs dog than mine. But since the dogs come to work with me and need to be well behaved in the office, I've found the grew's couch potato attitude to be great from that perspective. So is there any breeds or crosses that I should think about which are happy to sleep in the office but also a little more "active" and less reserved than our greyhound?

By February/March, private, breed and big-name rescues will be full of post-Xmas rehomes.
I'd go and see who jumps out at you, rather than breed/type etc.
Hopefully someone in your area can point you in the right direction :)

I'm afraid I don't know much about lurchers... are they a little more "interactive" than greyhounds?
Lurcher Link looks very useful, I've book marked it - thank you
Not really worried about distance, if a dog is going to be with me for life...I will go the extra mile to see it

Lurchers are very interactive! Be warned though, you cant stop at 1 :)

Lurcher Link is a fantastic rescue, Kaye who runs it really knows her
stuff and will know if a dog suits you and your lifestyle.

I've met Molly who Gina will be fostering and she's a real babe!

Well i never had a full greyhound so can't say for def but Bes is probably largely greyhound (black one in my sig). Both mine have a nice mix of being able to sleep all day while I'm at work but are raring to go for walks and play when you say. Particularly Dom the white one in my sig. Bes likes to play ball and go for runs but she's not fussed if she gets to stay in the warm. Dom however if much more an outdoors type. We did some ferreting with him this year which he loved and gave him loads of confidence and he's certainly more intelligent when it comes to training. He's definitely not as full on as a Collie but prob a nice in-between. There are so many mixes in lurcher's that its hard to say what they are exactly like as its more down to the individual dog.

oh...she looks lovely... this is going to be a problem... if I start looking, I'll want to get one now rather than wait til spring which was the plan.
Our greyhound is a bitch, is it better to get another bitch or a dog? I had thought it was good to mix, but not sure where I got that idea from...
I think Gina used the words I was looking for "outdoors dog"
Trace is definitely a bit of a princess, she'd rather be indoors than out, and god forbid it should be muddy...two photos, one today out in the snow and one from Sept on holiday

I've never experienced a purebred greyhound but we have a lurcher. His sire was a 3/4 greyhound and 1/4 collie. His mother was 1/2 greyhound, 1/2 deerhound! So Finn is a fair mix!

He's pretty active, very playfull. Very intelligent. But Finn appreciates spending time just relaxing and chilling out with you. He's the only lurcher i've experienced but they seem loyal, active, and yet have a lazy side too!

He also has the ability to sound like a banshee!

Finn seems like a nice mix of active but relaxed and loyal.

I think you'll know yourself when to get one. I wouldn't say there is a perfect time, but i imagine that if you want to rescue, spring would be when the centres start getting more, after the xmas period etc.

Thanks everyone, spent the evening trawling rescue websites, which is a little heartbreaking. I have seen a little rough coated lurcher boy, 9mths old, and OH thinks I should email to see if still available...

I saw him on the greyhound and lurcher rescue website, which says he's on Greyhound Gap.... but I can't find him on there.....will try an email them direct.
How have I gone from thinking to actually enquiring so quickly????

Oh....thank you for your effort... I got a bit lost on the website.... Not surprising he's rehomed and hopefully very happy.
I have sent an email to "lurcherlot" (?) giving information I hope is relevant on our circumstances, so maybe they will let us know if anyone else suitable?
I've also just seen Max on the special appeals page...

Get a greyhound dog instead :) All the bitches I have had have been 'reserved' just as you describe, whilst the dogs have been a lot more open, friendly and fun loving :D

try www.grwe.com :)

Tomato...I didn't know that, I just thought the reservedness was a greyhound trait...

Dice looks very like I was thinking of, any idea how big he is? would they re-home to a situation where he was going to work...

Will email them...Thank you

GRWE rehomed to me when I was working  as I could get home during the day to let them out? They are a lovely organisation and are completely reasonable :)

No not all greyhounds are reserved, some do demand attention though perhaps in a more calm way than many dogs do. I have greyhound brothers, Throp (who looks just like your girl) is more reserved with strangers initially, but loves a snuggle with those he knows and yet Hector is anyone's friend and is more active than his bro. At least if you know the sort of personality you want then it will be easier for the rescue to find the right match. I think often rescues try for a mixed pairing for a safer bet, but there plenty of other grey owners i know with single gender packs (all neutered) and feel its more about finding the right personality mix & who your current dog likes, though greyhounds do tend to be more social than some other breeds.
