When you buy a horse do you expect tack to be included??? *Rant potential!*

Even if it says it in the advert, when I first phone up I always ask the price and then conform if that is naked as the day they were born or with tack and/or rugs. That way everyone is on the same page. It's unbelievable that some people would just assume like that!

Though I do admit I would have assumed a new horse would come with a headcollar. Then again I've only bought a horse twice, one came with everything but the saddle (which I refused as it looked like the tree could be broken) and the other arrived over from Ireland on a transport with nothing but a headcollar and tail bandage.

Again if the advert says 'including tack' then yes I'd expect it to be included. However I pretty much expect it to be manky and ill fitting too so probably wouldn't want it!! I know a couple pf people that have tried horses in nice saddles then been presented with another (older, more manky looking) saddle when they turn up to collect the horse. 'that will fit her' etc Obviously it doesn't but the deal has already been struck and its difficult for some people to haggle at that stage.

I have to say of I was buying an event horse (!) I probably wouldn't bother about whether the tack was included or not, I think i'd be more concerned with whether the horse could make it round a decent XC course! and you'd get you own suitabley fitted tack??

Your potential buyers are trying it on. I wouldn't expect a horse to come with anything at all and would turn up to pick it up with a headcollar. If any tack is to be included in the sale it should say so in the advert. If I really like the horse's tack I negotiate for it at the same time as buying the horse, but would not expect for it to be automatically included.

My horse came with a headcollar and leadrope and that was only because the owner had brought them for him as a leaving present!!!

To be honest I wouldn't expect it to come with anything unless stated in the ad or agreed prior to the offer being made / during negotiations...

When I buy a new horse I think the shopping for new kit for it is often the best bit! and I would want to make sure that everything I kit the horse out in fits and is comfortable for both the horse and me - after all different people have very different ideas as to what a 'good fit' of anything is...

I've never brought a horse with anything included, and have never sold the horse with anything included as part of the price. I did send Goddy's bridle and bit with him, but that was just as a "present" for him more than anything!! ;)

I never expect tack and rugs to be included unless the advert says it does. When I bought my mare I paid the asking price for her which wasnt going to include tack and rugs but the owner let me have her bridle and bit and 3 turnout rugs for no extra cost which was nice.

I didnt want the saddle anyway as it wasnt big enough for me and my instructor who came with me to view her didnt think it fitted my mare very well anyway.

Completely unreasonable to expect tack to be included. They should ask you early on if it is and if you've said not then it is their choice to proceed on that basis and no grounds to then try and get money off. I'd be just as cross as you.

Of the horses/ponys I have purchased all have been naked apart from the latest one, however she needed a new saddle anyways so it wasnt worth it.

Of the horses I have sold both went with a full set of well fitting tack ( in one case with a made to measure saddle) and rugs as they were no use for the next horse and I like to be sure they will start life in their new home comfortable - am I a sucker or what!!!

If tack is not mentioned in the ad, then you are buying the horse only..

I bought mine from a dealer in Stone, she came with, N O T H I N G.. not even a head collar or lead rope.. no discount either BUT she did deliver my mare in her lorry (instead of money off), after the funds cleared, but I DID have to give her the money for the M6 toll as I wanted to give the pony a shorter journey to us as possible...

So, stick to your guns, horse traders give bugger all/nothing for free, why should you.

There, rant over... btw, horsey still with me over 5 years on, she wasn't as described either (Bombproof suitable for a novice),but me being a muppet, fell in love with the "wrong one" still,I wouldn't swap her for the world...

Never bought a horse with tack - OH's current horse did come with everything, but his previous owner was giving up horses and didn't want to try and sell everything seperately.

Ironically, OH's old horses saddle fitted better than the one he came with!!

I've had a mixed bag

I've had three that came with nothing or only a tatty headcollar, I've had one that came with saddle, bridle and headcollar, one that came with saddle, bridle, head collar and some grotty rugs, two that came with saddle, bridle, headcollars, bandages, rugs, grooming kit, feed bowls, feed bins and one that came with all of that lot plus some amazing rugs, several sets of boots, the rubber matting from her stable and first aid kit.

Most horses only come with a Bridle and maybe some rugs, If I bought a horse I'd like a head collar to get him home with lol but I wouldn't expect tack unless the advert stated 'With Tack'!!

I've never had a horse come with a headcollar! If I collect then I take my own. The last 2 horses I have bought were brought down by a contractor due to distance. They came out of the lorry with nothing, just 4 legs, 2 ears and a tail! The contractor used their own headcollar and rope for the journey duration.

I'm amazed that people would automatically assume the horse comes with tack, unless they were very novicy and new to the horse buying game.

Mine came completely naked. Had to leave her headcollar to go back in the lorry when she arrived.

We sold my first pony with all her rug/tack etc. but then it's unlikely I'd ever have another 12.2 that they'd fit.

mine came with just a headcollar!
if you're getting lots of people wanting the horse but only with tack, then i'd buy the cheapest saddle i could find if they think that would then make the horse worth the asking price. you can get synthetic saddles for peanuts

but i do think that if the advert doesn't say tack included then it's weird to assume it would be :S

no i dont think you are wrong to say tack is not included. I bought my first pony and he had nothing he got dropped off at my yard the bloke said wheres your head collar i had it there ready and he took his head collar off and i put mine on I had a bridle and borrowed a saddle while i was waiting to get my own and we made do for a few weeks. Then the next horse i got said tack included and i got saddle, bridle, head collar brushing boots over reach boots and numnahs and loads of rugs the saddle and rugs were in good condition and fitted well but the rest of it wasnt great but it done the job.

and my mini shetland came with 2 rugs and a head collar-rope but unless they had a big dog there isnt a lot else you could of used those for lol

I've never bought a horse with tack. When I bought G there was tack available at extra cost, but I felt it didn't fit her or me very well so I didn't buy it. If I was selling G (not about to happen!) I wouldn't include the tack, but if somebody was prepared to pay what I wanted for the saddle I might let it go with her as it fits her.

I'd agree that unless the ad specifically says "tack included", I'd assume it wasn't. When we bought Dylan all we got with him was his bit lol, as his previous owner didn't have her own tack anyway, the set she used was borrowed.

It's because their riding school horses' tack is welded to them, so obviously the tack must go with the horse

Baby-Pony came with a bridle - only because she wanted his hackamore to go with him - and two rugs, no headcollar though. The advert didn't say 'tack included' as her saddle fitted her other horse. Luckily Bront's saddle fits him half decently (as I thought it would) and so it's not like it was too much of an issue. When I come to sell him everything can go with him as I'll have no need for it anymore.

Bronson was on loan originally and he didn't have any tack either! I think when I tried him he was in a grackle, martingale (which he never needed) and a saddle that was far too big for him :p

I sold my mare with her saddle only because it was made to measure for her and only because I wanted to know 110% in my mind that she would have tack that fitted. I would not expect a horse to come with tack if I bought it, however.

I would always assume that horses are sold "naked", unless it explicitly states otherwise in the ad. My last LOAN horse came with just her bridle and rugs, I had to buy her a bit and a saddle!

Surely part of the fun of a new horse is going off and buying new shiny everything for the new shiny ned?:D

Never heard of tack coming with a horse unless its stated, strange they thought it all comes together, perhaps they think tack was handed to the breeder out of the mares backside when it was born!! LOL!:D

Traders tip- I keep a selection of suitably manky old saddles in different width fittings and a collection of synthetics and a collection of brand new cheap bridles so when these annoying people who will only pay full price for a horse with tack turn up, I can comfortably say yes, they do have tack available. If its a choice between losing £500 and throwing in a manky old saddle and cheap £25 bridle I know what I'll choose everytime!

I wouldnt even expect a headcollar- im not sure why you would.
Tack never fits anyway, so i'd rather buy my own. And its a well known trick for sellers to substitute the nice tack that you try the horse with for cra*ppy stuff if the horse does come with tack.

It just wouldnt enter my head that the horse would come with anything but his shoes and even then ive known people to sell a horse with only 3 shoes on! If you cant afford to get tack then you cant afford the horse!

Glad I'm not going mad!!!!! I have never even got a headcollar with a horse, let alone full tack. Especially when that tack was a pretty new Devoucoux dressage saddle, and a 6 month old Black country jumping saddle! I was only asking £7K for the horse, the tack was worth at least 3K!!! I have given up actively trying to sell the mare, so sick of complete timewasters and joyriders. I'm aiming to qualify her for the grassroots champs at badders next year!!!

Shame I did'nt come to you first rather than wasting my money on 2 crook horses! I would'nt have asked for a saddle either!! LOL!
Good luck at getting to grass roots, looks like allot of fun to do, I would be pretty stocked if I could get there!!:D
