Where are your horses jabbed??

Had vet up today for mares booster, yearlings last of three..she jabbed both in neck..but I'm sure normally they have been sticked in the bum..does it matter? as a muscle jab not vein..just did'nt expect it,

Mine used to have vaccinations in the neck, these days it is usually the chest. Antibiotics are usually given in the bum though.

I jab in the neck for intramuscular as I find it easiest not to hit veins in the neck, but if giving a course of injections I do left neck, right neck, right bum, left bum and then back round again...

Personal preference!

I find it easier to jab in the neck for both IV and IM, but my vet would always rather jab in the bum.. just depends on the person!

Mine are done in the chest so if they have a reaction, its not as sore on a flabby chest as opposed to neck muscles!!

Also our orange is better if done in the chest!!!

Would have to disagree with reaction to vacc in the chest being less painful than the neck. If you had ever seen a horse hobble on 3 legs (ie fracture lame) then you wouldnt say that! The reason for using the chest (apart from needle shy horses) is that the area drains better than the neck - also neck reaction can inhibit a horse physically from eating. For the record, you are more likely to have some sort of reaction ~(though usually mild) in the chest as far more blood vessels to hit,

mine is done in the neck - at speed as he canters circles round the vet
was at a comp and he stood on a nail and needed an anti toxin one, we loaded him into the lorry vet ran up the ramp stabbed needle in his bum and ran away again! i might try this for next years vaccs!

Bum. They tried to do my mums shettie in the neck but he just rears and snaps the needle.

Our yard requests the bum wherever possible, as one horse had some sort of reaction to the jab and left a massive lump on the neck and was a big problem for a while, apparently.

Granted i had the vet do the bum injections last and she has a small lump a year later where it was, but vet says better there than on her neck.
