Where did you get/buy your horse from?

flash - adtrader, was from a dodgy dealer 16yr ago, 30mins from home
twist - adtrader, direct from breeder, 30 mins from home after i had driven all over the NE england
havana - horsedeals, private sale, 21/2-3hrs drive from home

1st horse - given free by a rich owner who I worked for at weekends as he wasn't going to make top level dressage

2nd horse - £500 euro in the hills of Cyprus about 10 miles from my house at a small yard where she was a broodmare (the one in my album)

My first horse (coloured in sig) was advertised on the free-ads website with very few details and was at the opposite end of Scotland to me. About five hours drive followed by 14hour ferry trip :)

I phoned up about him as a comparison for the horse I had intended to buy, went to see him and was hooked as soon as I set eyes on him. The fact that he has turned out to be the best, most willing, honest and safe horse in the world with a great pedigree is a mega bonus as he is not the ploddy cob I set out looking for. Still has enough about him to be a fun ride though ;)

My second horse (the grey) is on long term/ permanent loan from a friend of a friend. He came from the next island group to us about 7hours by ferry.

Oldest (26 years young) dealer in New Forest
Breed her daughter now 10
Flew to Ireland for the big one came from very nice dealer in Gallway
One mare from Melton Sales
Her Daughter now 3 ready to sell shortly.
Stallion husband bought me at auction in Holland last May.
Given 2 mares in September

My Charlie came from a dealer in Ireland. Brilliant people that were recommended by Nick Skelton who had bought ponies for his son from them!

Una i found after about a year of searching the internet for a well bred friesian. She was at a stud who had imported her with her mother and i bought her unseen direct from them.

Bean landed in my yard :p A friend told her RI (and later my RI) that my parents had said I could have a horse, he told her about B, she came on a months trial. Looking back it's kinda ridiculous..... :p

Lady was advertised on horsemart for about 15 minutes before I spotted her. Looked at her and said "pretty sure that's the one" went to see her and put a deposit on less than 24 hours laer.

Rauti was unsold at auction and I bought him from his breeders one week later.

I bought Frodo from his breeders (different ones!) after seeing him as a foal on their website, and I bought Vino from his breeders (same as Rauti's, they're half brothers), because I wanted another from the same dam.

I advertised for a horse wanted on loan on horsemart. I had a huge reponse as the ad included that the horse would be kept in full Livery at Eland Lodge! A lady called from Manchester who actually brought her horse all the way to Eland for me to try him, she left him with me for a trial. 15 months later I bought him :)

Pippa from congelton, she was bought on a whim, but im v v v glad we bought her ;)
Bob down in Gloustershire, sold from the field, advertised as 13year old, actually 15 year old
Billy riding school in poynton, also told he was 15, but vet/dentist agreed he was 25 +
annd, misty from hull, sold from a lovely private seller :)
We've had a right mixed bunch :D

My horse (feels weird saying that- got him today!!) was from an absolutely lovely lady about 30 miles away. (private sale). Found him on Horsemart.

All of ours have been bought from ads seen in the Yorkshire Post, before internet sales really had taken off. Bought mine 15 years ago - I can still see his ad in the paper. I'd still love to find the woman we bought him from as I think she did a fab job breaking him in and I'd like her to know we still ahve him and he's still going strong aged 19 this year.

I found my mare in the shropshire star she is everything the private seller said she was, and also found out she was the same mare that I would of loved to have looked at 4 months earlier but was advertised at triple the money.

And now I have owned her for over 5 years I would of been happy to have paid triple she is well worth that kind of money first advertised at.

My N/F youngster was also advertised in the same paper and belonged to a lady who had fetched 16 colts and fillies from the newforest sales and some that she had bought privately, mine was not put in the sales he was forest bred but sold privately. He as been with me for over 3 years now.

My minnie shettie belonged to a friend and I begged him off her he has been with me for nearly 6 years.

All of my horses/ponies bar one have been private sales no dealers for me.

I had one pony that my dad bought from a sale for £75 nearly 19 yrs ago but everything has been private otherwise.

My current horses

Kia was bought from a lovely lady in East Linton near Haddinton in the Lothians. he was a field babysitter for her youngsters she bred arabs and part bred arabs. He hadnt been used for years for riding and was soo good when we went to try him. He passed a 5 stage vetting and bloods and we took him home and have had a hoot ever since!!

Eowyn was a rare find. Lady my RI used to teach was moving away and selling her mare as could only afford to take one horse with her. So went and saw her, never sat on her just saw her lunged and pop a few jumps on the lunge and she was delivered a week after. I just had a good idea and feel about her ans shes pretty lol!!

My coloured I found through word of mouth, told my yard owner I was looking, her sister also owned a yard, a riding school and had recently bought in a rather sharp skewbald that was too fiesty for most of the lessons, so I went to try him and loved him, took him on trial during which he bolted with me several times (once down a main road!) but I never considered giving him back as he was exactly what I wanted (minus the bolting which we have now got over!) Still have him 3 and a half years later and still think he is fabulous :D

My old boy I got through luck really! I used to work/help out at a riding school for many years whilst growing up and he was there as one of their school horses. He was always getting things wrong with him though, he was forever injuring himself, being off lame, having allergic reactions etc! Eventually the owners decided to close down the riding school and just do liveries so were looking to sell the school horses on. They didn't think anyone would want Ros with all his problems so offered him to me for free! Since I took him on he has barely had anything wrong with him, until last winter when his age started to catch up with him and he began suffering with arthritis but I am keeping ontop of it now and touchwood he still has a good few years left in him. He has a home with me for life and I am very glad I got the oppurtunity to have him. :)

My Welshie I got from an advert in Horsemart - private sale, just 6 years ago. My new little lady, Lily I bought from a dealer in Manchester. She is worth her weight in gold. :)

1st pony was from ad in local paper. He was the first pony we ever looked at and we bought him there and then and rode him home. Had him 20 years! 2nd pony was at same yard as us and hadn't been out of the field in 18 months. He was very thin and footsore and the owner couldn't sell him so we bought his saddle and she threw him in for free. Had him 23 years. 3rd horse we had on weekend loan and his owner was moving so she gave him to us. Had him over 20 years too.
The next one arrived at the grass livery we were at and we heard he was for sale so bought him.
The latest one we actually had to go out looking for. After spending weeks driving around the countryside looking at ponies who turned out to be nothing like their ads (or in one annoying case we said we wanted to buy one and only then did seller reveal that someone already had a deposit on it grrr!), we found our boy at a dealer's just a 15 min walk from my house! He turned out to be only just 2 rather than the nearer 3.1/2 we were told but temperament-wise he was everything she said he was. Of course he's now quite a lot taller than we originally wanted!

This time last year I looked on HHO to see if anyone on here had a horse from Darley Rehoming and what their experiences were. I had a response from a fab lady that turned out to live in the same road as the yard where I was sharing a friends pony. Long story short ... she put me directly in touch with Darley and even came with me the first time I tried George. I went to try George for a second time after that and the rest as they say is history! Darley rehoming is just 35 minutes away from me and now the lovely lady i met on here is now a livery at the same yard as me and our two boys are next door to each other!! I had wanted to own an ex-racer for nearly as long as I can remember and I'm sure that fate played a part!

Latest one - H & H classifieds. I'm in Kent (and don't drive), he was in Wimbledon. Just tried him the once (for 5 minutes). How bad am I? The one before - the love of my life - local freeads. One from his breeder. One through farrier. Another through H & H. First one through the riding school I went to. Blimey, how many have I had?

Nelson we brought untried from auction in Exeter. Rosie I got from a dealer in south Devon, Quarrystone stables after I had seen her at auction.

My little welshie was word of mouth after I had looked everywhere for a companion, he was an orphan and had him from 6 months old...very cheeky

I was very bad and committed the ultimate taboo - I bought mine without going to see him *slaps wrist*
But he was going to be sent for slaughter and was only 12. I heard about him from my friend and he was from Kent. I couldn't bear for him to be killed so I offered £500 and was told I could have him for free if I could get him to me (other end of the country).
£200 worth of transport later and my lovely, sweet mannered, 16hh Monty was mine :)

I was helping a friend find a horse, our first time out was to a dealers in west sussex about 1 & half hours away.
She told the guy what she wanted and the 1st stable he took us to had a lovely bright bay in she said it was too small and we moved on to another stable but I kept going back to look at the bright bay and said I would try him. Then that was it I had to have him so I went to try several others to check I wasn't being stupid and then had to borrow the money to get him.
He is fab tho!

Both of mine were bought from private ads in the Ad Trader :) first horse was delivered by the seller, and we hired a local horse transport company to pick Dylan up.

Goddy (coloured in sig) came from Ireland. I pretty much knew he was what I wanted before going over there. Also got a fab weekend in Dublin out of it ;)
Lucky was found through a friend who had lessons with the person who was selling her. Found out that someone else had recommended the same person to me a year before and I had completely forgotten!! :o

Got ours from a dealer in South Wales, he doesn't seem to have many for sale any more, maybe he's winding down to retire.

My daughter called up about a 6 yo ex racer gelding but he was sold so the man told her about our horse who was a 3yo ex racer at the time. We went to the viewing, did everything wrong that it was possible to do at a viewing and bought the horse!
