My mother wont talk to me, my dad knows nothing about horses, nobody else at the yard is likely to want to help much and my instructor sort of scares me :o

So I have 2 saddles - the dressage one rises a lot at the back and leaves darker sweat marks along the front edge. Its a Bates Caprilli dressage (with cair) and tbh I haven't been getting on with it for a while - I'm pretty certain it doesn't fit.

The other is a Bates Caprilli jumping, I love the position it puts me in, it's lovely, but not 100% about the fit. He has a lot of poles down when he jumps, and sometimes I wonder if the saddle isn't helping.

I HAVE decided that I will happily give up jumping for now, to just buy a good dressage saddle (so can sell both saddles).

But.... in order to buy a new (second hand) one, obviously I need money. I know some places part ex. but my mum insists that they aren't likely to 'give me' what the saddles are worth so I will still end up paying out more than I should as such.

So.... do I sell the jumping saddle & see how I get on when the saddler comes?
Sell both and give him time off whilst I find a new saddle?
Sell both and hope I can borrow a saddle that fits fairly well in the mean time?

I really don't know :( I know I've brought this up so many times now, but my mother really doesn't care - to be honest, she doesn't even seem to like the horses, she doesn't want to talk to me, so I've given up trying. I don't like talking to people generally anyway so asking for advice scares me on it's own, prospect of phoning saddle fitter is terrifying but needs must!!

Help? :/

Why not ask the saddler what he will give you for both the saddles and see, also place adverts up in tack shops online etc for them and try to sell them both and soon as you sell at least one of them get saddler out with saddles to try so you know how much more money you need for it.

Sometimes by the time you advertise and post etc the price you get on ebay for instance is the price a decent saddler would offer. Sometimes it can take months of posting on various sites, at least the saddler would pretty much give you instant cash. I recently sold a great quality GP saddle for £100 less than I paid for it a month earlier as I really wanted a saddle for my youngster and I didn't want to hang around and spend £££ on advertising it.

I hadn't thought of that! If I call him before he comes out for a quote on the saddles then that would solve a few issues........
I could also ask maybe if he would be willing to 'reserve' a saddle if one fits? Is this likely to be possible?

Thank you!

OR... ask your saddler about the fit on your current saddles - if your dressage is rising at the back then you are being tipped forward. If it was level on your horses back (as it should be,) then you will be in a totally different position. It is worth confirming with your saddler how much he is going to charge you for the call out/reflocking if money is an issue or are you shaing the call out with other people at the yard? Then if you need a new saddle, I would recommend selling the one you want to get rid of first. In my own experience, black dressage saddles seem to go a lot quicker than actual jumping saddles - I still have one I tried to sell over a year ago!. Another way of getting an idea of what your saddle could be worth would be to look at ebay, see what they go for and ensure you put a sufficient reserve on it (but do be careful of the scams - anyone offering more than its worth, "trusting" you to refund them is to be avoided with the proverbial bargepole)

Your saddler might px them for a different saddle. Could you go down the route of a GP saddle or do you need 2?
You could list them on Ebay with a reserve or a starting price of the min you would take for them. Listings on Ebay can run from 1 day up to 10 depending on how quick you want the item to run for.
Advertise them on sites like Horsemart, Friday ads and Horse & Hound they all let you advertise for free if the item of tack is under £500.

hate to say this but where are you going to get the money to pay the saddler for his visit?

Plus, why dont you get the dressage saddle reflocked. That way you dont need to buy a new one and it will hopefully beable to be adjusted to fit.

Saddles are cair - can't be flocked. Narrower gullet makes it tighter on his shoulders, wider makes it lift more, which is why I know it can't fit! :o
Will definitely be giving the saddle fitter a call on tuesday :)

I don't really 'fit' GP saddles (long thigh...) and as I mostly want to concentrate on dressage, I would prefer a dressage saddle. But this really doesn't help when I want to have fun doing XC occasionally!

I've used ebay regularly and know a few places to advertise so that shouldn't be a problem :) Thanks!

That kind of money is a lot easier to borrow/find. I don't have many items with hundreds of pounds that I can just sell tbh, but what it will cost to actually get the saddler out isn't -too- hard. In theory.

Dressage saddle -can't- be reflocked. It's CAIR. If I'd have understood about this when I bought it over a year ago, I wouldn't have bought it, simple ;) But I did buy it, and I highly doubt it will ever fit, although I do love it otherwise :p

What a pain in the arse for you, my fault for not reading your post properly!

Oh well, as has been said, I agree that exchanging them for a new one with the saddler is probably the best option

Perhaps sell both saddles. Spend most of the money on a decent dressage saddle, then buy an older second hand jumping saddle for a couple of hundred for the rare occasions when you jump?

Its actually quite hard to buy a second hand jumping saddle too! so if poss I would try to hold onto yours if it fits. Sorry about the cair - its been a long time since I had one..You are lucky to have long thigh bones - most dressage saddles are built for riders like you, I am completely opposite - short thigh but long calves so blooming hard to get one that suits me.

Can you not sell the dressage and keep the jumping saddle and buy a good gel pad to go under it?
There are loads of pads like this which enable you to put pretty much any saddle on any horse! :)

Have you got a lot of stuff you no longer need? I have sold about 3 saddles and a load of junk from my garage to get my horses jumping saddle. I also work for my instructor and get paid £30 for every day. Good luck finding the money I'm sure you will :)
