where do you prefer to clip?

i arrived at work today (a small yard 20ft square from stables to gate) and the yard gate to the road was open, there was a 'professional' person clipping the ponies. the yard is concrete and the stables are rubber matting, one of the ponies is not always very predictable on the ground and has been known to run off the yard in the past, the lighting is no different in stables or on the yard as he was in the end of an open barn.
i am just very surprised that anyone would clip on an open yard outside especially with the yard gates open.

so what is your preference?
 
On the yard but with the gates closed, in daylight. I like as much light and room as possible.

Currently trying to find a combination of a time of day when neddy isn't expecting to go out to play, but is also clean and dry, and when it is still light ...:mad::p It's harder than you'd think.

I'm with you Theocat. In hindsight (wonderful thing) New Year's Day would have been perfect.
 
i'd never ever clip a horse i didn't know very well in a stable , you could be killed or seriously injured even if the horse is very quiet its incredibly dangerous as there is just nowhere to go if the horse objects and lashes out , even the quietest of horses can get nipped or a tiny electric shock and you could be splatted against a wall in seconds

but i think they are complete idiots for not closing the gate and i would have said so :p
 
yes i can see that daylight is best when its safe to do so-the lightest place on our yard is one of the stables as it has a halogen light directly above it though, the horse that has been known to head out of the yard when possible got a shock of the clippers once, then ran straight through the post and rail fence across the road into a brick wall and fell on the road, she kept going for 4 miles up the road on a wet dark winters night and then ran through a barbed wire fence to get to a herd of gypsy ponies-obviously the person clipping today would only know that if my boss told them. she was stitched up fairly minor wounds and was fine.
 
I'd always choose outside in natural light and with less change of being squished! Leaving gate open though is sheer negligence
 
I clip mine in an open sided barn, however I would happily clip outside. I wouldn't clip in a stable by choice, although I have done my very easy to do mare in her stable.

I managed a VERY shoddy trace clip around then ... neddy was kept in specially and was jumping up and down wanting to join his friends. At least he's cooler now, but I really, really REALLY need to tidy him up and take the rest off :p
 
I clip mine outside in daylight as I don't have a power supply in my stable.

I also clip most of the horses on the yard and do the majority of them outside although I have one who you cannot get near with clippers if he is outside put him in a stable however and he is as quiet as a lamb so he is done inside a stable.
 
Outside in daylight but not with a gate open that's just silly! Was someone holding this previous runaway horse also? I wouldn't want to be left on my own with a horse known to do that kind of madness, in fact I'd be tempted to sedate it if that was purely an out of the blue reaction to clipping.
 
I've never clipped, but I think the sensible option for most would be outside, in daylight, with a helper/owner to hold neddy, and with gates shut!

This: did the boy's belly, gullet and half a head on Sunday having planned it days ago, but he was too sweaty two days and I spent hours trying to get the mud out of his belly hair :(
 
Outside. Even with one that's ok with clippers, if there is any noise outside then I find with the noise of clippers, its hard for them to establish what exactly any outside noise is. In barns etc is fine, but only clip in a stable if its one I know is extremely good to clip, or if its a small pony in a very big box.

it was before i started there and she got a shock from the clippers when they were clipping her ears, i do her ears now and twitch her she is good as gold twitched but for the rest she is great, and no he was clipping on his own in fact he clipped the one that is less sure whilst holding the end of the lead rope whilst clipping
 
Normally outside, this one we have now I do in the stable as he's a sod & would just ****** off if he had too much space.

Saying that, the yo probably wouldn't let us clip outside anyway incase any hairs blew about - its an extremely tidy yard!
 
Ooh didn't realise the word I did write was too naughty for on here, the asterixs appeared by themselves haha! Ive learned something today :D
 
Mine is in what used to be a foaling box so has large open door with chest bar so do him in there, however he does just go to sleep. The yard also has a sort of 'pen'/barn that can be used, so open and roofed but with fencing if you can imagine it.
