I'm sure there will be lots of posts similar to this but I've not quite figured out how to search forum posts yet, so apologies! :D

I rent a field, and currently have my horse and a friends cob on it. However friend has just let me know that her cob is up for sale, so I need a companion for my lad. (I know it might take a while for the cob to sell, but I'd like to try and get organised.)

Instead of having someone elses horse/pony, I'd like to have my own, as it'll be less complicated. The problem is I only have a small budget.

How much do you think it'll cost to find a nice companion pony? And where from? :)

I don't mind any age, or mare, gelding or even a colt (wouldn't mind paying to geld myself), but I need a friendly pony, who wouldn't mind being left on their own for an hour or so.

We have plenty of grazing, and adequate shelter, as well as a field shelter than converts into 2 stables in case of emergencies.

Thanks in advance :)

My boss recently lost her Shetland and her Cob couldn't possibly cope on his own, so she went to a local horse shelter where they rehomed horses and ponies. She told them what she was after and they gathered a few that were ready to go so that she could pick.

She doesn't technically own the horse but the only thing she can't do in reality is sell it. It cost her nothing but a donation to the shelter :)

If you go to a reputable rehoming centre you will get one that has been week cared for (at least recently) and they will be honest about any health problems that it has.

Ah thanks, the only problem is there aren't too many charities near me that rehome, and those that do either have a rule that the horse must have a stable at night, or an extortionate rehoming fee :)

I'd def look into rehoming a horse/pony from a proper rescue/rehoming shelter etc - you always see loads on there that can't be ridden again which people may overlook - I really wish I could have land to help out lol rather than being stuff behind a desk :(

Does anyone know of any equine rehoming centres in the North West in that case? :)

I know of HAPPA, which insists on a stable and RSPCA, who asked my friend for a donation of £700 for companion.

I have a companion pony looking for a new home hes a shetland has lived out the past 5 months with a mixed herd was asking for £200 but not bothered about the money for a good home pm me if you want to know more :)

Depending on where you are in the country, you could try looking for a dartmoor pony, or a dartmoor hill pony. In the south west at least, they don't cost much to buy, even if they have had some basic handling. You could try http://www.dpht.co.uk/index.php as a starting point (I'm not involved with them, just went to one of their showcase days fairly recently).

I'm in the north west unfortunately, so transport would cost a lot :)

staceyn - I've replied to your PM :)

Try your local riding schools
often a pony needs a holiday or a shetland has got a bit weary of kids and needs a break or one is semi-retired. My companion came from a school that was closing down.

I would rather pay £700 to a charity to help horses that aren't lucky enough to come home with me than to a private seller :)

Sounds a lot for a companion tho. SWHP charged me £50 for mine - and she is worth her weight in gold as a companion.

I'm also in the North West and have just taken on a non-ridden companion from WHW Penny Farm near Blackpool. They even delivered her for me, for a donation of course.

I have one looking for a home. He's lovely but has been abandoned with us and I just can't afford to keep him. He's absolutely fab to leave on his own - doesn't give two hoots! PM me if you're interested.
