Tentatively pondering selling my Spanish mare, I am a bit reluctant to put a full ad anywhere as because of the type she is I am worried the type of people she might attract, I know that sounds terrible but she is a fairytale looking type and I am so worried she will have a load of joyriders turn up!

I know some people source them for others, can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't really want to pay full sales livery if I can help it but it may end up like that just so they can go directly to the right buyers rather than risk total daydreamers coming to ride her.

I have heard of people going out to Spain for clients so if there was anybody like that this might save them a trip?

You only tend to get joy riders if you don't word the ad well, put in poor photos and then when people make contact you get carried away "selling" her and forget that you can screen them by asking sensible questions, I very rarely get anyone I would think of as a timewaster or daydreamer because my ads are businesslike, they describe the horse properly with decent photos, I then put off anyone who doesn't sound suitable, a few may slip through but they are usually genuinely looking just not as experienced or suitable as I expected.

I never use the free sites, avoid Horsemart as the only responses last time were scammers or people wanting to loan, I find Horsequest is the best site for serious buyers and sellers, have always had a good response and very few daydreamers, that is no help to you finding an agent but may give you help if you decide to advertise her yourself, I am more than happy to proofread if you want an unbiased view before you put an ad on.

That's so helpful thanks, I have only ever sold horses to friends previously, so in my mind I can imagine people seeing pics of her and thinking ooh I fancy riding one of those! I am just pondering at the moment, not 100% decided but I know there are a lot of agents and specialist around so it would be handy for me to just find someone that way but your reply definitely makes me feel more confident about putting up a full ad :)

As BP said above, I wouldn't worry too much as long as you get the advert right and screen enquiries well. You can fairly easily get unsuitable buyers to decide no for themselves with a bit of anti-selling once you realise they're not suitable.

I like horsequest, and I think there is a special section for Iberians (though it might just be PRE specific)

Most people lead busy lives and are unlikely to want to waste their time going through the ads, making a call, I very rarely make arrangements unless the person has called and that gets rid of the possibility of a quick text, arrange time, turn up, if they have to speak to you they will need a good story ready for your questions.
I always ask where it will be kept, will there be company, what are their plans, do they have an instructor, if they are relatively local I may know their vet/ farrier/ RC so can get a bit more info out of them by having mutual acquaintances , if they get through my list they are unlikely to be a novice looking for a free ride as they would have to be fairly thick if they think they will get away with sitting on for more than a few minutes if they are not up to it, I have once or twice asked people to get off, not allowed them to jump if not up to it, I had one poor girl in tears because she loved the horse but I knew she would not cope if she had him at home once he sussed her out, it can be tricky but equally I have got to know some lovely people through selling.

Thanks for this, its hard because she would be fine with a beginner and she is totally bombproof but equally I don't want that to attract very inexperienced horse owners!
I think when I make the final decision perhaps ill pm you the ad if you don't mind as I have absolutely no experience with advertising!

No problem just send it when you are ready.

I'd put her on horsequest too, at a decent price then you should be ok :). I think you will always have to risk filtering some numpties though :).

bapsh site for horses for sale, and classical riding club, but you may need to be a member, although i think i put a free ad on one site.

Got a friend looking for one, 15.2 - 16 hands, 5-8 years old. If she fits and you decide to sell, where are you? PM if you prefer.

There is a FB site specifically for UK based Spanish and Portuguese horses for sale. It seems to attract people knowledgeable about the breed so might be worth checking out :) Plus there are some wanted ads on there too. Good luck!

I was going to say this but do try BAPSH website and page, GBPRE site and page and PSLGB page too. Classical Riding, Ecole de Legerete, EE...
