Which chaff is the least calorific? (for a fatty!)

Beau has now gone onto alfa oil with his topspec instead of normal HiFi, Lance used to share his hifi, ie just a handful to mix his supplements in with.

However Lance gets fat just looking at food, but I do need to give him something to mix his supplemens in with, and i like to give him a little something so he isnt left out at feed times.

so my question is, which chaff has the least sugar/calories, ie is the least fattening!

Im only farmiliar with Dengie products, so no idea of the content of any other brands.

well he was already getting that before I switched over, so i guess i will stick with that.

Ive never used any other chaff brands, mollichaff? etc, so wasnt sure if there was a better one out there.

Of all the Dengie chaffs I think the lowest is HiFi Good Doer which contains only 7MJDE/kg, whereas HiFi Lite contains 8 MJDE/kg. Spillers Happy Dieter is also 7 MJDE/kg. Not sure about other makes, but suspect they probably don't go much lower than 7 MJDE/kg.
 
Thanks TGM, I remember going to a Dengie talk and the rep said I think the only difference between the good doer and hi fi lite is that the good doer has the vits and minerals sprayed into it, hi fi lite doesnt.

Just found analysis for the Mollichaff range - the lowest energy chaffs they make are Mollichaff Original, Mollichaff Herbal and Applechaff - all 7.5MJDE/kg.
 
Hi Fi Lite has a sugar or molass coating though doesn't it? Simple Systems supply plain chaff - either Ruff Stuff or Lucie Stalks. No molasses or sugar in sight...
 
I think Hi Fi Lite contains 'molasses extract'. Simple Systems are great if you are specifically looking to exclude molasses, although both the products you mention are higher in calories than HiFi Lite or Good Doer - they are both 9MJDE/kg.

Thanks TGM, I might give one of those a try then if they are so low, the hifi is ok, but i find with the hi fi lite because it is so plain it doesn take away thetaste of his supplements, yet if he has a tastier chaff, like when i tried the good doer, he licks off every bit!

Thanks for that info on SS ISH_mad... but my nearest supplier is well over an hour away and i cant justify the delivery costs because I dont have storage to buy in bulk.
 
Why don't you try something like happy hoof or safe and sound. They're both a bit more interesting than plain chaff, and disguise the taste of supplements as they've got mint in them (I think). Chloe loves her safe and sound, it's all she gets!

I stopped getting it because another livery uses the same chaff, and mine kept decreasing at an alarming rate while hers never decreased! despite my horse eating far less!

Hence why i changed to hi fi lite, no one touches it! but then he doesnt eat up all his supplements.

No room for more feed bins,we all share the big metal ones.

The curse of livery yards I think! Was quite funny to find someone using my alfa oil on her horse who is overweight and doesnt need any more energy though!

Safe and Sound contains mollasses. Spillers Happy Dieter has been discontinued according to my local supplier, shame as my mare was doing very well on it. Allen and Page Ride and Relax looks OK for a good doer. Too much choice these days, thats the problem!

Ride & Relax isn't a chaff though, it's a compound feed.

To be fair, most chaffs contain mollasses in one form or another, even HiFi Light contains some, albeit a small amount. Same with Happy Hoof which is around 8% sugar I think.
I've found Safe & Sound to be very well received by my welshy, although I don't feed the recommended amount as she balloons on fresh air!
