Which estate car for towing?

I need to replace my towing vehicle as I think my 4x4 is about to die. I'm looking at getting an estate car that's beefy enough to do the job as my two dogs are getting older and are struggling to jump into the back of a 4x4 and a dog ramp is too steep.

Can anyone recommend an estate car that is capable and can legally tow an Ifor Williams 510 with one 400kg pony onboard. In the ideal world it will be able to tow 2 x 400kg, but not essential.

Any sugestions?

I have an Audi A6 Avant and it does a brilliant job. I have an IW510 and a 16 hands ginger monster to go in it. It has never let me down yet.

Does it need to be a 4X4 estate?

Towing on a B or B+E licence?

Two x 400 kgs plus unladen weight of 510 is likely to be around 1800 kgs so needs an estate with a towing capacity of at least 1800 kgs but preferably around 2000 kgs for extra bits

Doesn't need to be a 4x4 estate, just an estate with a boot large enough to get two greyhounds in. Was thinking along the lines of a Volvo or Merc?

I've had a licence for donkeys years so I assume its a B+E.

I have used a merc c180 which i towed 1 horse with, it was a dream and i could hardly feel the trailer on the back!

I think even an Impreza estate is making quite a statement! There's nothing more haunting than when you see the overgrown boy racer with the baby seat and a labrador in the back :p
