Recently just treated myself to a lovely new riding hat, after having a velvet hat I decided to go for a skull hat. Ended up with this:

http://www.gatehouserange.co.uk/gatehouse-hs1-jockey-skull-p-258.html

The gatehouse HS1 in silver with a navy silk. Have to say it feels so much safer! Definitely the best hat I've had!

So which riding hat do you have? Just a fun thread :D and hope everyone is having a good start to the new year!

I have a champion skull for everyday and a caldene velvet navy hat with leather harness for showing.
However am still deciding on what hat to replace the skull with - want a modern vented one. The ones i have tried don't seem to sit right or look horrendously big and perched!
The champion ones with the silver strip look too bulky on my head, the JTE looks bulky too as does the caldene vented one!
Am looking into the casco types or like the look of the gatehouse air rider.
We only have a country wide near us so guess am gonna have to look further a field! may pay a trip to robinsons payday see whats there!

I'm an HS1 girl too and i have to say, it's definitely saved me from serious injury in the past. I use a Charles Owen velvet for dressage.

I have to say I nearly didn't get the HS1 as it looks huge on my head (I'm only little) and it was such a contrast to the velvet one but when I thought about it I thought my head should come before vanity!! Got used to it now and it does look nice :)

Yes your right. I am so fussy when it comes to hats! i just want a safe hat that looks good ?! i don't think i would be compromising my safety so long as it was correctly fitted and reaches all the standards but must admit i did try a poly hat on and it felt really unsafe and flimsy.....
Not sure if there any UK suppliers of Casco hats as not seen any - all seem to be german

Never tried on a polyhat but always thought they don't look very safe! I could have got a much cheaper hat than what I did that is just as safe... But I liked the silver with the nude chinstrap! Lol. So I thought stuff it and bought it - student loan comes back in soon anyway ;)

I wanted an HSI but the shape of them didn't suit my head :(

I have a Charles Owen J3 skull for everyday and fast work, and an Ayr8 in black and silver for competitions. I'm looking to get a new one for comps, the CO Wellington, and then the Ayr8 will be a general use one too.

In the past I've always had Charles Owen. When I needed a new hat last year I tried the CO skulls and they didn't fit me at all don't know if my head has changed shape or if their hats are different. In the end after trying every hat in the shop the only hat that fitted was the HS1 so that is what I chose. I was worried about the lack of ventilation but nearly a year on and I've not had an issue so far.

oo! I have an HS1 - I absolutely love it. It is SO comfortable and I feel very confident in it. Unfortunately the only colour they had was silver so I look a bit like a Martian (as i can never find a hat silk when I want one). It was such a relief after being persuaded to buy a Charles Owen that was really half a size too small and gave me a pulsating headache after 20 minutes.

Yes, the one thing I did notice was no ventilation on mine and have to say I do notice the difference a little bit, coming from a vented velvet hat but it's nothing too bad to cry about!

I know what you mean! When in the shop I had to ask to try it with a silk to get a proper feel of how it looked as I felt like a Martian too! I love that the little bit of silver just pokes out the bottom of my silk :) I love it more and more every time I think of it!

.

Gatehouse have just brought out a new skull, RXC1 which is all the same safety standards as he HS1 but is for an oval shaped rather than round shaped head. It also has a removable and washable liner and is vented. Hubby bought me one for crimbo

Apparently I have the wrong shaped head for the Charles Owen Ayr 8, which is the one I wanted when I changed my hat a few months ago, Instead I got a navy Champion one which is by far the most comfortable and flattering hat I've ever had, I don't know the model but it is plain navy with a ventilation strip down the front and a peak, and it's that kind of fake suede material. I managed to fit into a kids one which is exactly the same as the adult one but has cartoon horses on the inside and was significantly cheaper, was a bargain at £54!

All of mine are by Zilco - a velvet one for dressage and a Tipperary for endurance, plus an older model something for around home. My paddock one is getting a bit past it and needs replacing, but I have quite a "long" head and the newer ones seem to sit several inches above my ears. And while I value my life, the ones that do look ok, are priced in the stratosphere, so I might be sticking with the old one for a bit yet.

Mine are PROtector! Love them, smart and personalized but still feel very safe and sturdy. They are the only brand of hat that I've ever felt totally comfortable wearing.

Well for some reason I seem to have two skull caps for xc, a velvet hat for showing (don't show anymore so may that on fleabay) A beagler that I use to wear for showing until a hat with a harness was required by the rules, a champion hat of some sort (silver strip down the middle) but that is material and it's faded so I bought a Gatehouse conquest with my xmas pennies. Quite why I have 6 hats is beyond me............

I've got the Charles Owen J3.

Tried the HS1, and it didn't fit the shape of my head either, but the J3 does me fine. I've only got one hat; I have a black velvet for posh!

I have a JTE Junior showjumper that I have had for years - just got a new one :D

I also have a Charles Owen Showjumper XP. If I am honest, I feel 'safer' and more comfortable in the JTE.

I have a geriatric Charles Owen skull which really needs replacing, just need to find one that is comfortable!!

This made me giggle! Will also pm you re your "unneeded" velvet hat ;)

My son has a LAS helmet, it's great for ventilation as he has exmah in his hair, so a sweaty head is an itchy one! He also has a white Polocrosse hat with a face guard for competing . He also has a hat we got at HOYS few years ago, it cost me a small fortune cos Ben Mayer had one!!!!!!

I have a HS1, which I love. Only one I tried which felt comfortable with my head shape:) However, I feel that it was fitted a bit big, started to tip forwards a bit :frown3:
Also have a Pferdesport Model E02 for show jumping, reduced to £70 at Your Horse Live and as I'd just joined bsja, Mum thought she's treat me:)
