I would say the majority of people who don't do turnout 365/24/7 in winter bring in overnight and turnout during the day?? but does anyone do the opposite?? been thinking today the coldest part of a day is overnight when a horse could mooch to keep warm and circulation moving (yet we bring in) the warmer part of the day when mooching might not be needed for warmth we put out

i stable during day in summer when we have heat waves . i can see your point but thick bed stable rug on they are warm enough, getting soaked during day (few liverys rugs leaked today) and out all night is going to give them a chill

A yard I worked at turned the horses out at night all year round as the horses were worked during the day so were in and easily available and also were standing in for less time so using less bedding and labour. Obviously horses were well rugged in winter and had hay in fields too. I know it sounds odd but worked for them and all the horses were well and happy.

Couple of winters ago, my yard had the livery neds in 2 groups, the Day Shift and the Night shift. Made the winter grazing last longer. Half were out in the day and in at night, the other half vice versa. Worked a treat!

food for thought!

I suppose its relating them to ourselves. We like to be tucked up in bed at night (says the woman on a nightshift..) so we presume the horses should be the same.

In saying that, mine are out 24/7 with shelter.
As for foalie, if you can, Def try not to rug for first year as long as he/she has shelter. My TB youngsters manage perfectly well doing that and I`m in the North of Scotland.

Gives them a good start and stops them being "bad doers" later on in life
