Horse wore a rug one night that must of slipped over night as was put on correctly in the afternoon and seemed to fit well. In morning rug has rubbed chest and now there is a White patch of hair. Someone said it'll stay there forever like a scar - there goes any showing... :(

:( he is such a well bred new forest - won breeds show as a 1 and 2yo and ready to do ridden showing this coming year at the age of 9 (finally sane enough!) so that's pretty much ruined now. ******! Rug is going in the bin!

It can sometimes - my mare got white hair from bandage rubs on her legs that have now gone.
Even if it doesn't go you can still show, just dye the hair - you can get special horse ones which are safe to use and it's routinely used by showing people

You might be lucky, I know a horse that got a speckling of white hairs from an ill fitting saddle. When she changed her coat (after getting a properly fitted saddle) the hair came back normal coloured.

We had a horse that had a white patch of hair in the saddle area that would dissapear when he moulted and grew a summer coat, but to only come back every winter. My saddler could never understand it....

Dyeing would be the way to go if he is shown over the winter, if not I would be tempted to wait until the summer coat comes through and see how it looks then.

For chestnut, I can recommend Clairol Nice n Easy 106 - supposed to be light ash blonde, but turned my hair bright orange!!!!!!
