About leather headcollars?! I’d always used the nylon type ones for everyday and kept leather for smart, but bought a (relatively) cheap leather one last year. Why have I never done this before? Said headcollar has been left outside by the field in all weathers for the last year, has never been cleaned, and still looks almost as good as new?? Doesn’t get soggy and disgusting in the rain, plus still smart enough for outings too.

I do keep my nice ones for travel and outings, but cheap ones are great field headcollars. the leather gives way easily when it needs to if you have to leave one on during turnout, and if you haven't spent a lot it's not too painful to replace. I always try to have one kicking about.

1 for turnout stuff
1 for grooming and leading around
1 with a name plate specifically for traveling

Shires are really good and have a buckle on the top of the nose, too, my favourite configuration. I either use that or the cheapest of the cheap nylon with roko buckles that you can do up one handed.
