Just wondered how many of you on here boot up your horse or pony when turning out?

What boots do you use and why?

*gah can't edit title, mention to say *up

Not as a rule I don't but from today until my field dries up my mare is wearing Over reach boots in the hope she won't pull off any more shoes. 3 shoes in two weeks has got to be a record!

For protection from kicks or brushing?

Just to clarify, yes obviously I know the main reasons why, more interested into different people's takes on the matter as I know lots of people who will turn out naked quite happily and lots who will boot up to the 9's. I just find it quite interesting to find out people's personal preferences.

I boot up all 4 legs in brushing boots and front over reaches when changing fields or New horses coming in.
He does brush when ridden so likely to do damage if fooling around and these occasions are when he would. Also to give some protection if kicking match between them if caught in that area.
Doesn't wear at any other time as bare foot, when wore shoes he had over reaches on all time.

Over reaches & sausage boot on all the time in field & stable.

Hes a wee bit close in front & where food is involved he can forget 2 move 1 leg out the way b4 moving the other so used 2 stand on himself & shoe flies off!
Since this booting arrangement haven't had any flying shoes! (running around touching wood!)

I used to with the old lad - glad I did as the big fud tried to go through the fence and sliced his leg open (10 staples, 2 weeks on painkillers and antibiotics).
he was lucky he was wearing boots otherwise he'd have done serious damage.

I used woofwear neoprene brushing boots until that incident. then I changed to mark Todd carbon fibre xc boots and I stopped booting up when we moved yards.

the two bigger lads both wear overreach boots as they have a habit of chucking shoes in the field by hooning about. Beau wore those carbon fibre boots for a bit because he's so big and gangly and he doesn't always know what he's doing with his legs/feet.

I do now! My mare has never had boots on when out in the field but in January this year she fractured her splint bone while out. We think she kicked herself pratting about.

for everyday then no, even after being in for a few days. But when i move him to his new yard, i will pop on some tendon and brushing boots for his first time out, until he settles then il whip them off, just to compensate for the fact that in a new place he gets way over excited and is liable to be a complete hooligan and self preservation goes out of the window while meeting new horses. :)

I will when turning out in new pasture this spring. once everyone settled, there's no need really. you expect the odd scrape or two but its the major ones I want to avoid

not any more. Seen too many rubs - sweating - skin problems. The ONLY time is for 3 days on my horses when a new horse first goes out with them after week separation. I will not boot up otherwise.

yes you can edit title click edit then advanced and you can change it as long as in the first 15 mins

everyone at my yard except me! and they all have either individual turnout or turnout with 1 other horse. and about half also do stable bandages every night.

It makes my horses look like I dont take care of them at all!!!

for me its personal preference. i like to think mine are hardy enough to be a proper horse in the field and run around without falling over. I know accidents happen but I try not to be over cautious and also its time consuming (gosh now i seem lazy and uncaring!!). Basically I boot and bandage if its necessary for specific exercises, otherwise they are naked.

One of mine was constantly loosing shoes so I started turning out in over reach boots. Somehow though I lost four pairs in a week in the field! So now out with nothing until I can get to the tack shop to buy more haha!

Not a chance. I want my horse's tendons to survive a good many years eventing, so I definitely won't be heating them up with boots on a dailey basis! Only exception is when introducing new horses to the herd.
