bit of a strange thread... more interested in the shape it takes (ie what everyone else thinks) so please post pictures to back-up what you're saying...

To me being in balence is far more important that position.. but at the same time, those people who are usually in balence usually have a pretty good postion!! so you'd think the two go hand in hand... BUT some of the pics posted in the other thread, although were pretty good positions, to me were NOT in balence...

So, to round up, you can have a strange position, but still be in balence.. and you can have a good position, but not be in balence!!!
(let's not have any of the 'what if' talk, ie for this argument, we'll assume that the horse does NOT trip of fall on landing)

DieselDog.. yes you lower leg is a little far back, but i think you loo in balence with the horse!!

Ooooo you can critique this one (it's the ONLY pic I've got of me jumping over 2ft LOL) - got just a littleeeee bit left behind as pony went 1, 2,3 weeeeee I've seen a stride so sod you!" Remember at the time it didn't feel that bad to sit too & Ben commented on how I'd turned into a defensive eventer (well my idol of my childhood was and still is Mary King

Can't see your lower leg, and yes you are slightly behind the movement, but you have a nice elbow, hand rein contact, and i would say you are in balence with the horse!!

Have just posted more from Vegas in the other thread, think it backs up claim that different positions work for different people at different fences - but balance is a common feature.

think the position in this is awful, but is balanced, but ready to be corrected

Thbink you've made a very good point regarding balance/position etc - only have to watch Andrew Nicholson go xc to prove that it's not just about looking pretty.

And also think that balance is something you only learn yourself like feel - you could have all the lessons in the world and look the part but your balance could be so little that if a horse was to stop, drop a shoulder or something - you might end up on the floor

I think my lower leg is bad as I pivot on my knee

[/ QUOTE ]

i don't think you are in that pic, as although your lower leg has slipped back, it's still on the horse...

which has actually helped me with yours madhector.. it looks like you are pivoting on your knee in that pic, and that is where your weight is.

PS, sorry about the title of the thread, i know it makes no sense.. nor much of my wording above... it's been a long day!!!

think your right, knew there was something not right

but my jumping position is so awful is hard to tell sometimes where I am going wrong!

MDM, I posted 3 pictures of my sister in the other thread. What do you think of her balance.

[/ QUOTE ]

Perfect in this one..

hard to tell in this one.. a) it's a bit small, and b) horse has put in an awkward jump.. and

hence looks to be griping a bit

Annette Lewis never looked secure, but she was a fab rider.

I saw her SJ recently and was amazed she stayed on!! but i agree, cant be much wrong if she did & does so well

Me, I'm awful

Bit better on the pony:

Damn lower leg-SJ in me

See.. i'd say the top pic was MORE in balence than the bottom picture!!!!!
perfect example actually, of where a worse position can be more in balence than a better position...
perfect, thankyou!!

Would be interesting to know what you make of Kiri and mick's balance in the post below on position especially given that he is so small and she is so tall!

Don't really know what I'm talking about but isn't it about being balanced and secure so you're ready for whatever happens next. As someone who just watches rather than actually doing it, I don't even notice what it looks like but I notice when someone eats dirt!. Pics of my grandaughter SJ, XC and point to pointing.

Don't know why she usually has her mouth open when she jumps - gasping for air??

first two pics over the blue barrels are spot on perfect.. second two look a bit loose and weak, but as you've said, she's a tall person on a small pony, which makes things very hard!!

Tbh, Im amazed he actually jumped it AND that kiri stayed on (I wouldn't

) in the second 2, he was backing off the whole way into it (with some bucks for good measure) and then practically jumped it from a standstill after a growl and a smack a stride out.

What do you think of these -

Paris028_0001.jpg

Not my best position!

Paris027_00014.jpg

and this one! LOL she took a bit of a long one, wasn't expecting it!

I think balance means that a rider would sit a dodgy jumper and not fall off. I also think balance is totally transparent through the hands. ie. someone with no balance can stay on, but will catch them in the gob. The hands on someone with good balance will always look steady and in control.
Sometimes I do wonder how riders with a weak lower leg would fare on a different horse, different situation.
Critique both of the riders in this photo:
