who can spot balence, and more to the point, who notices it??

[ QUOTE ]
I think balance means that a rider would sit a dodgy jumper and not fall off. I also think balance is totally transparent through the hands. ie. someone with no balance can stay on, but will catch them in the gob. The hands on someone with good balance will always look steady and in control.

Totally agree, some people can sit there and look pretty but if something goes wrong, theyre out the front/side door! I can think of two fantasitc examples of juniors who were sucessful in the JAS series but who I have seen hit the deck because their style didnt give them security!!

Sometimes I do wonder how riders with a weak lower leg would fare on a different horse, different situation.
Critique both of the riders in this photo:

nothing to critique.. both are perfectly in balance!! yes the other rider has let his lower leg slip back, but it doesn't matter here, he more than likely is just using it.. and you could be looking up, not down (something i've noticed i do alot)... (and you've posted who the other rider is before

vicijp, yep, it's the hands that give away balance!!
This is why to me, this post is the best example of my post...
Emma123 thinks that she looks better in the second pic, because she is generally in the more clasical position, yet she looks slightly left behind and relying on her hands too much.. where as in the first pic, yes it could be pulled apart for the lower leg and lying on the horses neck, but she IS in balance with the horse! therefore i don't think the other 'faults' matter!!

right will try to find some links, I know what I thin the main faults are, will be interesting to see if you all agree.

Love this, all happy smiley even though it is toward the end of her first Novice, lowere leg a bit weak but other than that OK.

to me a classic of the rider not waiting for the horse http://www.theimagefile.com/?skin=3825&pcp=21&ppwd=rd3034dk&Action=VF&id=3750138

Better

Do you think the lower leg back could just be the difference in leg length, alas adjusting the style slightly?
Both are using the knee as main point of balance, however if the photo was a split second before, I bet the knees wouldnt even be touching the saddle.
Would that be the main difference between riding like this, and riding long?
I think that leg/body length has a lot to do with how people adjust their balance.

MDM could you have a look at this for me!!

I absolutely despair of my lwer leg position! hence my original post!

Alot of these pics dont look too bad but I think the litmus test would maybe to see the position just before take off. If the rider is too far forwards as it looks like in most of them then it will hinder the horses take off. Unfortunately most professional photos tend to be taken mid air and may not be that accurate as it can capture even the best riders in bad positions. Where better riders have an advantage is their speed of response - they have is their ability to quickly re-arrange themselves, ie, be able to get back into balance before the horse lands thus getting themselves and their horse out of trouble.

I'm going to join in yes she who doesn't jump here's the only photo I have

So what do you think? Probably just killed this thread

from one who doesn't jump.. the only question i can ask is why?? you look pretty good at it to me!!!

HJ, i wouldn't say that your lower leg was that bad, esp in that pic!! the pic you need to look at and question, is the one of you jumping a chestnut horse over a corner (on your website).. the horse looks fine, and your position on paper is fine, but there's something wrong with it.. if you keep looking at it, you'll work it out
wink.gif

Am a little out of my depth talking about racing position.. as someone who only rides up the gallops and never actually been taught about riding a finish etc... but i do feel i can get a good piece of 'work' out of them, and in order to do so, i use my lower leg slightly further back, like the other rider in your pic.. hence i said he might of moved it back there to be stronger with it, as i guess you're coming into the last fence??

I think position in racing has far more to do with the uper body, and i'm sure i haven't really worked it out yet.. hence i'm not the best to comment on it!!

That is the last with a circuit to go. The leg pozzy may be something to do with my horse being a proper hard puller!
As regarding racing pozzy, yes, totally to do with upper body position. Settling a horse is all about how far forward/back you have your a55 over the saddle - but not letting it affect your hands.

And your shoulders, infact i think you're shoulders are VERY inportant when it comes to holding a puller???? But, having said that, we have one at work at the mo, that i can't sit one side of!!! other people can hold it, but it will wrap it's head round your leg (left leg).. where as i can keep it straight, but can't hold it (i can pull it up at the top, just not dictate the speed in which we get there)... my excuse is i'm an eventer, not a jockey
wink.gif
hehe

I think I have a good lower leg and balance (or so im told) probably mainly due to having a first pony who used to bomb off and buck occasionally and we did loads of fun rides when I was little so that definately helped.

Think this was pretty good from when I was about 9

What do you think?

yep, looking pretty good to me!!

i had a pony like that.. and have some fab pics of him.. will try and get them onto the computer one day.. will make everyone laugh if nothing else.

I like this one! It's not pretty but it is action!

I think balance can be greatly affected by the saddle you're in. Quite a few people I teach can't sit in the right place as most GPs have the stirrup bars in the wrong place in relation to the deepest part of the seat - you can neither ride at dressage nor jumping length.

lovely pic

i find i ride best in a racing saddle
crazy.gif
i feel safer in it (ie on sharp horses) and the other day, i took my irons away and did some sitting trot in it, and found it alot easier than with the dressage saddle... racing saddles are the way forward hehe..

I did like them when riding the pointers in the winter, but I'm not sure about sitting masive bucks or if a horse really hit a fence what with no knee rolls.... Luckily they were very nice pointers, much better behaved than my horses!

LOL - hows about that then - first time jumping in a year and he FLEW everything - with me hanging on - BUT thoroughly enjoying myself - Even if my face is to the contrary!!
