Who else is broken?

Broken but on the mend. Broke my wrist with complex compression fracture when the horse fell 8 weeks ago, on the mend now but still have limited movement and bugger all strength. Hopefully I'll get the all clear to drive again on Monday which will help enormously, just want my independence back - feel like a teenager asking for lifts constantly.

Agreed- we all all mad!!

Some very nasty injuries there, puts me off getting back on.
Hope everybody who has posted heals well.

Katt you mentioned having 2 screws removed, do you know which ones? Only I have the same two in the end of the tibia and would like to know if they are likely to come out. I'm back to see the Consultants on Monday so shall ask anyway, just interested to know the reasons behind the removal etc.

The 2 screws being removed are the ones going through both tib and fib - they are acting as ligaments as mine was damaged. Apparently they cannot stay in as they are not strong enough if I put weight on my foot - so they need to come out before any walking starts.

Ouch bless you, thanks for the info and explaination. I hope the op and recovery go well. x

I'm broken - not because of an accident, I did it on purpose :D

In simple terms, I have a genetic condition that resulted in my legs being bowed (among other things). I went in for my yearly do-you-want-a-op? visit and they explained a procedure to me that sounded strange, but good.
Simplifying it again, both bones have been broken one about 1/3s down from my knee, the other about 1/4 up from my ankle. A carbon-fiber & steel 'cage' is around holding the bones together and everyday I adjust it using a dice & nut, and it moves my leg around about 2.5mm a day until it is finally straight and you can't tell the difference from normal :D
I'm on my second one now, and this is a lot easier & better then the first. It took me about 5months the first time to walk again with it on, and I'm almost at 2months with this one on and I'm almost walking.
I 'grew' a whole inch and a half, which made me exactly 5foot on my right leg :p, I've now got to make sure I adjust to get my leg straight, as well as lengthen to get more or less exactly there. (I'm about 3cm out at the moment.)

Ouch. Twice.

Well done you! Not an easy decision to make I wouldn't have thought :). So how long for recovery, etc., do they think it will be? Will you be able to ride?

My second daughter had developmental dsyplacia of the hip. Her femur was too staight at the head, so the ball didn't form properly in the socket. Didn't realise until she started trying to stand/walk at about twelve months. The consultant had to cut a tendon (?, I forget what it was called!!) to manipulate the bone to where it should be, then she was in a hip spica cast for months. It didn't work and her femur had to be broken and plated, to put a bend in it. Back in the cast for x more months. This time it worked :). She was discharged by the hospital about two years ago :).

All crossed that your treatment goes well :)

I was on pain meds for about 2 weeks after this one went on, and other then that it feels normal. Well, normal as in I know it's there, but it just feels normal to me. First one I was on pain meds for about 3.5 months, and it never 'settled' like this one.

It was a quick decision, in the middle of my exams, and about 2 months after that I had the surgery done. They quoted 3-4months, but for me and my genetic condition that would of been optimistic. I had the first one on for 10 months, the bone was slow growing, and it wasn't helped by the fact I was stupid and didn't take my medicine for a period of time. How long this one is going to be on is a mystery, but I'm currently telling friends around February time it will come off :)
I will be able to ride - in between the first and second (6 weeks, 2 with cast), I rode 3 days before my second frame-on operation. An hour and a bit hack with a fair bit of cantering. Not the best idea in hindsight to do all that, as I was uneven and my leg felt 'new', but it was the best thing ever, and I know the first thing I want to do after this one is off is go find a stable and ride :) (or just spend an hour (minimum :p) around horses.)

My condition wasn't detected until I started to walk either, I have X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets. The 'cage' is actually called an Ilizarov Frame.

Sucks to hear that your daughters first treatment didn't work, but good to hear her second did :) I googled what a hip spica cast was, and that looks uncomfortable!

Thank you :) It is going very well and a lot faster from last time!

Glad things are going better this time :D. I can get back on in February as well :D. Will be grand :D

Daughter is doing fine now, elven years on :D. She has a scar on her leg from the plate going in and out, but other than that, one wouldn't know :). The hip spica was a pain at the time, but it didn't bother her, she could still get around :D. She even managed to walk when both legs were out at ninety degrees and she was in plaster from waist to knees! Heavy though, certainly knew she was in one's arms lol.

Will continue to keep bits crossed that things keep going well for you :D. Looking forward to the pictures in February :D :D

Mee!!! Im feeling incredibly sorry for myself at the moment!!
How did you do it?
I fell off my spooky mare last week as a low flying helicopter came zooming over us, so she shot off bucking. Went flying and lost my memory for about 10 mins after falling off. Had an asthma attack and went into shock. Couldnt move so an ambulance was called.
What have you done?
Was taken to a&e on a back board and neck brace, to find out i have a fractured coccyx
And, how are you healing?
Been exactly a week today and at first couldnt move below my waist for a few days which was awful. Now a week later, i can tentitively hobble with a stick from the bedroom to the lounge but thats exhausting as it is. SLOOOOWWW Progress and very depressing. No idea on recovery times, ive heard anything from weeks to years. Im hoping it is weeks, im itching to get going, laying on the sofa (sitting hurts) is driving me mad!!!

Me!

I'm hopping round everywhere on crutches as fell off last weekend at a hunter trial (my fault entirely) and have a very badly sprained ankle and a broken finger. I haven't ridden for a week now and so have been chasing everyone else round on my horses and being very bored!

Blimey - so many of you have been fixed incorrectly. It's no wonder docs pay so much each year for liability protection!

Poor brokees - hugs to you all.

I had a breakthrough today - got my arm into a sleeve! hurrah. Now i don't have to walk around looking like i'm pregnant with an alien baby!

My there is so many of us broken! Some very brave operations too. Mine pales into insignificance!!!

I had a breakthrough today too.... I went upstairs on my feet with one crutch instead of on my bum!!! Wow that felt like an achievement!!!

I am now sat with a tired ankle elevated as it has worked way too hard today! :p

Healing hugs to you all!! x

Wooo, well done you! I look forward to that great moment, I am still using the bum method :-)

I use the bum method - i tried the first day going up on 1 crutch but soon realised that the bannister finished half way up! I had never noticed that before!

I have a pair of crutches at the top of the stairs and a pair at the top which makes life a lot easier!

I'm so looking forward to my physio on Wednesday! Nice relaxing massage?? Probably not!!!!

I'm and doing one of the things the physio told me to do now which is foot into bowl of hot water, as hot as can be beared, for one minute, then to a bowl of cold water for one minute. Then to do my ROM exercises after. The blood flow in and out and exercise after is supposed to help soften and help release all the internal soft tissue. Now the hot bowl is nice but the cold one is.......:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::

I'm broken- but kind of self inflicted. I fell off a 4yr old in Aug 2006 my foot was 180degree where it should be on my ankle. Nice. my xrays didn't look too different to Katd. I had the two pins removed in Nov 06 and then endless "clean ups" and cortisone injections .
Last week I had a 5hr op to re break the bones in the ankle and then bone was put in from my hip to strengthen it and ligament reconstruction. I am 4 days in to 2week non weight bearing and its killing me!! The drugs are making me very poorly- I have lost 3/4stone since Fri!

When I first broke it I was in the "air boot thing" and never acast. Now I am in a cast for first time ever and my left knee has swollen from the strain. 2nd to fusing the joint which would mean I wouldn't be able to put heel down in stirrup this was the only thing left to do. I will be in cast for 10more days when they x-ray and remove staples/stitches. and then re-cast for 6-8weeks then I go in to the air boot again. surgeon I have had for bout 2.5yrs and the only recovery he has said is I can't ride for at least 3mnths- and he made me promise I would drive for at least 10days (I have automatic because of ankle)

The hardest thing is one of my horses has been difficult for two years and the last 2weeks he has been unbeatable- literally! and it was gutting to send him off to my trainer for 3months!

I use Sprenger flexi stirrups with "cheesegrater" treads for all riding and they have made ahuge difference in taking the strain off my leg.

Yay for improvements! :D

I have to say, I'm really bored of being broken. Is now just a drag.

Physio starts on Thursday! I have such high hopes....

Good luck Mrs M! I'd be interested to hear what they advise.

poor you hope you heal fast :p
im broken i have a broken coller bone from xc fall :p xx
Ouch - healing vibes.

I use Sprenger flexi stirrups with "cheesegrater" treads for all riding and they have made ahuge difference in taking the strain off my leg.

I was wondering about getting some now too, after a new hat, body protector and parachute! I might have to start saving now! Smac - it really doesn't sound self inflicted, it sounds ultra painful. Bless you x

The good news from me is I'm progressing well! I have my cast off and an air boot now, but still not weight bearing. Tho I'm not all that impressed with it, it's so tight it's leaving 3-4 mm indentations around my skin, therefore i'm not convinced it's the right fit? But it does mean bare naked legs in bed, which after 5 weeks of cast is FAB!

Back wise the Consultant was happy with my progress, and said the vertabrae had not collapsed, which is what he keeps checking for, so back again in 2 weeks. Rock on next year!

Take care broken ones! x

My best friends aunty did this and ended up having her ankle fixed. She is very good at dressage. She still competes up to PSG but she rides with no stirups. I always think she is very inspirational as she never lets anything stop her!

I hope it all goes well and you get better soon.

Maizy- I have two pairs of the Sprengers, and that was about £400 so huge outlay, but I borrowed a friends pair for over a month so I was sure it would be worth the money- but I spend alot of time swapping stirrups on to each saddle when the horses can't "saddle share". Worth putting on your christmas list!
So jealous your cast is off- my check up and stitches removed will be 11more days -and then they put me in another cast for 6-8weeks!!! good news on you back though!

Wispagold, thank you. I have heard of runners/mountain climbers etc continuing after a fusion but no riders so interesting to hear as a future option. It was a huge decision to go for this and as the time off is the same either way I really hope it was the right choice- I want to avoid this again! Best part of private though is got to do it at end of event season and my goal to be back on by christmas- even to practice sitting trot...

I'm broken too!

Had a nasty fall at work 6 weeks ago today, off a 3yr old that I had backed before going on holiday and got back on for the 1st time. I spent 3 weeks working with him before getting back on, all went smoothly, long reining, bit of lunging in full tack and stirrups, leaning over etc... (this is after he'd been backed and sat on approx 10 times before his month off due to my holiday). I also was mindful to not do too much, didn't want to be getting on a fit 3yr old ISH.
I leant over, all fine, he happy and relaxed. Big pats, good boy. I told the girl holding him what I was doing and got on lightly. Again, all good, relaxed, plenty of praise. Took approx 4 steps forward in the menage and I say "just be careful, sometimes he jumps forwards a bit when my legs touch his sides..." to the v experienced girl leading him.
My legs didn't touch his sides, but suddenly he just lost it. I am known for my sticky bum, I don't come off easily. The only way I can describe what he was doing is spinning fly bucks. Leaping high, head down, hand stands, whist spinning.Girl got knocked down, rope burns from lunge line. I clung on for what seemed like ages, mangaged to grab hold of the bit each side to try and pull head up, didn't work. He didn't stop until I finally fell, at 1 point I thought I was landing on my feet, unfortunately not.
I landed on my back, didn't move, pain indescribable! Lots of gas and air and morphine later, finally on spinal board on way to hospital.

I have broken my back, L1. Very lucky, no damage to functions, nerves etc, although they were quite concerned at first. Could have been a whole lot worse.
2 weeks spent flat on back in hospital, now stuck at home in a back brace, waiting to get better. The pain has been awful. Nerve pain in the spine is excrutiating and paralysing, and visited me everytime I woke up after a little snooze for a few weeks. Thank god that has settled down now. Was averaging 2 hrs sleep a night if I was lucky.
Just managed to wean myself off from morphine this week, the withdrawal symptoms have been a b****.
Am going back to hospital next week for first check up, really hoping it's good news. At least not in bad pain now and getting some (fitful) sleep.

Am hoping to get back to work after xmas, not with horses though. Am going to keep on riding and competing my horse eventually but I can't face working with them again.

Am going to make a full recovery, very grateful of that. It's been tough though. Than god for my OH and family, would be truly stuck without them.

OP, I hope your injury heals well and the prognosis turns out to be good. I am going to be around for the forseeable future, so if you want someone to moan to, I'm here!
I'm the same as you, itching to get back on,esp after watching the WEG, all inspired to work on my mare and progress!

Can't wait to be better!

ETA: sorry for the long ramble!

So sorry to hear about your accident and I hope you mend well and soon....

puts my accident into perspective.... I have fallen off 3 times this year, I think I should give up riding green horses as I am far too old for that malarky...

We were breaking in a 4 year old and she has already tipped off one person, so I got one, I had ridden her before but this time she just bolted off and threw me against a wooden fence... can't remember the fall I must have blacked out, I just remember getting up off the ground feeling rather dazed and having the broken rail pointed out to me... I had a broken rib and severe bruising across my hip and the top of my thigh (which is still numb and swollen and the fall was in may....)

I then got bucked off another horse and severely twisted my knee and then fell off again and wrenched my thumb.... knee clicks every time I get up now but thumb is healing nicely...

I am sticking to my horse from now on as I seem to be able to stay on board (but I hope this doesn't jimx things....) may have new entry if not....

My thoughts are with all of the broken people...

I was broke now just a little broke and mending.

I wish mine was horse related then i wouldn’t feel so stupid. I fell down 3 stairs at home my foot went under me and i sat on it (I wish I was 8 stone). My husband heard the crash and the scream and came running (it was 7am so he was asleep) he helped me up and after the shock it wasn’t too bad so i went to work (husbands car is an automatic so took that) it started to swell after a few hours so thought i should go to the hospital just in case.

I had broken my little toe and badly sprained my ankle, they told me to use crutches and to put weight on my foot. I went home but went to the yard over the weekend and back to work on the Monday. Got an appointment for the fracture clinic which i thought was to look at my toe so i drove myself parked the car miles away and hobbled into the clinic. They didn’t even look at my toe, sent me for more x-rays and decided that i needed to be in plaster because they thought i had damaged the ligament that holds my ankle in place. They doctor signed my off for 2 weeks and told me not to put my foot on the floor. Now remember i said i had parked my car miles away and was on my own well my time i got to the car on crutched i was knackered and really upset to be in plaster. I called my boss told her i couldn’t work for 2 weeks and took myself off home to sulk.

After 2 weeks I was back at the clinic still in pain so they cast me up to my knee signed me off for a further 2 weeks and booked me in for an MRI scan.

I got the results 3 days ago and thank god they were clear he then told me that i had chipped a bone in my foot (i wasn’t told this before) but the cast could come off because it was 4 weeks down the line and that i could start to put weight on it.

Well I am now back in work and back at the yard although not riding the pain is worse than it was with the cast on and my calf muscle is hurting because it hasn’t don’t anything for 4 weeks.

I am hoping to be back on in a week or so but need to weight for the swelling to go down in my ankle (normal apparently).

I was luck in some ways but cant believe how it affected me, i was so gutted and hated staying in bed for 4 weeks i was going completely nuts.

Hope you all heal well..

Hi to all of you on this thread - can i join your gang. Came off whilst hacking on 17th, got helicoptored to hospital, have broken L1 vertibrae which looks like jigsaw pieces on my CT scan. Stuck on my back in a brace for most of the time - can walk slowley a little bit - so glad it could have been a lot worse. I was wearing a racesafe body protector at the time - can't help wondering if things would have been a lot worse without it. Am bored out of my mind, can't stop thinking about what I am going to do with my boy - OH wants me to get rid of him and give up riding which I can't bear to think about. So good to find others in same boat - best wishes to everyone - to anyone in a back brace - how long did you have to wear it for? do you take it off at night - I just cant sleep on my back!
love n hugs xx

Hello :)

Sorry Maizy, been so tired lately...

Physio - core muscles. Lots of stomach exercises. All very simple, but surprisingly tiring! I did them from Thursday to Sunday and felt grand :D; from Monday to now I am tired of the lumpiness.

Physio lady pointed out that as I broke my back when I landed on my feet (really stupid idea of mine!), that if I hadn't been wearing a BP, the break would have moved and things would have been so much worse.

Mine is L2, but it's a stable fracture. Back brace for ten weeks. Wore it at all times other than when sleeping. Now onto physio.

Back aches and the muscles next to the break and lower down. Makes me very tired very easily.

Gosh so many of us!!

I broke my ankle trying to land on my feet after a stupid fall whilst riding my last horse.

My xrays were identical to Katd66's except they shortened my fib too much and a few months later the Talus slipped, causing horrendous arthritis.

I stupidly listened to the Dr who told me it was normal. I did not push and make him realise the pain was really much worse.

I left it too long and the only choices were a fusion or replacement joint. It is the only time I have been glad to have rheumatoid arthritis, otherwise they would not have given me a replacement.

I had my op on 5th August and it is a 75 to 85% less pain than it was. I have started riding again just over a week ago

However the last couple of days it has been really quite sore. I am paranoid that something may have gone wrong. Just hoping I have just over done things and not done physio enough.
So tomorrow I am not going to the stables and WILL do my physio properly!!

Landing on your feet is so dam dangerous, like some here it can break far too many things including ankles, spine and skull. I didn't realise just how dangerous it is until I did my training for the ambulance service. In fact I think I will post to inform those that don't know!!

Lots of remote healing vibes to everyone!!

Hi all,
I'm new to HORSE AND HOUND Forum.
I seem to be going for the record in riding disaters!
It started in July 2009,when entered for a 2day Long Distance ride.Whilst carrying my tack, I cockled over and broke my ankle, hadn't even got near the horse!
July 2010 I was on a social ride on the beach from Fleetwood to Blackpool and came a cropper in the sea, got dragged, kicked, head injury through my hat !bruised BOOBS, OUCH!!,lost a tooth and ended up in the Air Ambulance.Luckily I don't remember anything until sitting up on the sand.
Had just got going again on my horse, when we had all the snow and ice, then a week before Christmas tripped over the dog in the house and cracked my ribs!No I WASN'T UNDER THE INFLUENCE and this was not horse related.
Things were looking up and had started riding in the school and hacking out, then 3 weeks ago whilst having a lesson ina sand/rubber surfaced school, I was trotting, my horse spooked, he shot across the school to the left and I came out of the side door, landed on my back and shoulder and sufferred a broken humerus.
After a visit toAand E, morphine,X-rays etc I was told it needed plating as my broken bones were sideby side instead of in a line.
3 days later when a bed was available, I had the operation and am now recovering.
Had all the staples out a couple of days ago but not allowed to move my arm which is in a sling. My shoulder blade and neck get to aching alot with the weight of my arm and I get very frustrated, but looking at all the posts, it looks like I will just have to be patient and wait for the healing process.
I have done Long Distance since 1987 on my old horse who lived til he was 34yrs and had very few falls on him.
My present horse is same breed partbred arab, homebred 9 yrs old and he is not a naughty horse. he did not throw me, I fell off, it's something I am doing or not doing, but I am going to have to stop all these accidents as I can't afford not to work as I am self- employed, but I don't want to stop riding HELP!

I am still broken.

On 3rd December I was out with work friends for our Xmas do....we were dancing and some random drunken chav jumped into our group, punching a friend in the face and kicking me in the knee.

Kneecap ended up round the wrong side of my leg, I had a broken knee cap, destroyed the tendons and damaged cartilage.

I'm now 3.5 months on and still off work, still can't drive, I am now down to using only one crutch, but can't yet walk unaided. Still on pain mess, and doing twice weekly physio session....I've narrowly avoided a full knee replacement operation.

No riding for me for a while!

I'm broken too, not even remotely horse related but hey ho :o I have a broken finger, it's been broken for 3 weeks, I've had 2 ops to fix it, first didn't work but as of yesterday the 2nd did - yippeeeee!!!

After the first op consultant said no riding, no driving, no sport for 4 weeks, no mention of work but this time after 2nd op 10 days ago I was off work for a week I was in that much pain, went back yesterday for check up and stitches out, been back at work since Monday. I asked for note to cover me for the week I was off and he's only gone and signed me off for 6 flippin weeks.

I spoke to the nurse (Doc had buggered off) and asked if it was flexible and she said no, if he's said you're not fit for 6 weeks he doesn't want you to work, if you knock it or bang it then you're back to square 1.

So today I go back in to work to discuss with HR, I don't want to be off work but basically jist is if signed off by doc am signed off, I spoke to my doc (not consultant at hosp) about getting signed fit for work and they've basically said consultant said 6 weeks for a reason - really bad break apparently - ho hum. I would've had to write letter saying no blame on employer if I went back within 6 weeks just in case I hurt myself and I'm not prepared to do that.

Sorry, just having a mutter as can't wfh and feel soooo guilty, I know there's a reason I'm signed off. I really don't want to knock it and have to have another op because the pain was unreal. I'm not allowed to use my hand and I found I was opening doors and carrying stuff at work and I'd understand if it was a leg/arm/back but a finger?!

I'm just frustrated because I'm stuck in the house and feeling guilty, sorry all, thanks for reading; salted caramel chocolate tart all round :D
