Hello

I've seen a lovely Section D for sale. To make a good height and looks to have a nice temperament. I've only even owned sporty horses but intrigued to know how Sec D's cope with eventing. Not looking to compete every weekend but the odd go here and there.

What does everyone do with their welshie and how are they at competing?

Thanks

There's welsh ds and Welsh ds.

Some are more sporty than others, I used to stable mine next to one of the lean wiry ones that was great for hunting and jumping, he would have made a nice eventer at the lower levels.

By comparison mine is short and squat and more suited to dressage! She's super strong for collection but totally not built for speed ?

What level are you aiming at?

I had one of the chunkier Ds. Whilst eventing, or indeed jumping at all wasn’t really my thing, he was grand at up to about 100cm schooling. That would have been his limit. He comfortably won both of the RC novice ODEs we did at about 84cm.

His dressage was good (got to medium).

There used to be a poster on here that did the badminton grassroots with a welsh d I'm sure. I can't remember her user name but she was a small animal vet in case that jogs anyones memory and can find old posts with photos.

Yep Marmalade Monty - he still does a bit of hunting but he's crossed with something. Did some TREC judging today and there was a gorgeous Welsh D. Much finer than I am used to and looked a great sort for eventing. He was feisty!

Only BE80 just to see how it goes and if I can find my big girl pant haha. Well the one I'm looking at will possibly 16hh. Doesn't look chunky but still growing.

Thanks everyone for your input. Suppose it just depends on the horse. I can most likely do it, may not be the quickest but will have fun ?

Well of course they can at the lower levels, think that a pony won the Badminton Grass Roots championship. Anything Pony Club or Riding Club should be fine if trained and fit.

Get up to the higher levels where more scope needed for the fences and more gallop required for the times and they will reach their physical limit, but you don't really want to get to that point.

I know a Welsh d who went BE100 happily. Not with me...I don’t do jumping! He was one of those genuine turn his hoof to anything sorts.

If you have a look at Elphickeventponies on youtube, the lady who runs that has a Welsh D (among others) which she has taken to Badminton Grass Roots. It's not an especially sporty/over height one, either.

With something to make 16hh, I think you'd have no problem!

I wish I could remember names but she used to ride with the RMA sandhurst drag and although she is a briliant rider ,I used to josh her about falling off out hunting. (if you never push the envelope ,you never fall off).Bloody good rider.nIcky seems to jog my memory, and LLewi the git of a welshie. Maybe the wrong person , but fits the bill and a real horsewoman.
