As the title says really...

We have a local bridleway that has had a tree down across it for about 6 months, rendering it impassable by neddies (unless they are under 10 hh or lie down and crawl). It's a real bummer as this bridleway is part of a really useful circular route.

Is the council supposed to do something? Is it someone else?

You could try contacting your local bridleways officer? I've also contacted the local council re overgrown bridleways and they have been cleared pretty quickly.

County Council, or look on the BHS website for the local Access person on the committee..I assume that you have considered approaching the land owner and asking them to clear it

To ensure it is cleared quickly I would suggest that you write to the Acces Department of your local County Council and let them know exactly where it is. Photocopy the local ordanance survey map and mark with an X. I suggest you send the letter to them by recorded delivery so that there is no doubt that they have received it!

A fallen tree is treated as an obstruction and you are legally able to take a small diversion to get passed it.

Hope this helps.
