I mean on their own on a yard/field with no other horses. I currently have three at home - 2x 15.2 riding horses and a 26" mini as a companion for when one is taken out. No other horses around.

I am struggling with time keeping both in ridden work, and someone is interested in buying one of them. Seems like the sensible idea, but I am worried the horse I keep will become unsettled. Obviously they are herd animals, and it just doesn't seem like two is much of a herd!

My companion pony is super, she will not be in the slightest bit bothered when I take other horse out for a hack or if I'm out for the day at a show. She calls when we come back, but that's all.

But my other horse and the horse that may be sold are best buds. If I take one out for a hack or out to a comp and leave the other behind, there is no issue so no separation anxiety. But the other always comes back.

I think I might be worrying over nothing, but just wanted other opinions and experiences of a little herd of two?

I have two at home they seem happy enough been here nearly two years and they seem the same as they did on a livery yard, my mare is quite clingy to the gelding but she has always been like that, when I ride I bring them both in I never leave one in the field alone, she is worse when left alone out of the two she will call a bit and dig up her bed but nothing else, I do have a livery at the moment but he has his own field I will bring him in also if I ride and to be honest even with him as company for my mare she is not much different when my gelding is ridden, its him she misses going she is not that bothered about the other horse.

I have my horse and his nanny, my retired children's pony, a 12.2 welshie who is completely unbothered by being left on his own, gets ridden once a week and loved lots and seems happy. My horse came from a racing yard and never seemed worried by the change in numbers of horses. I think the one on one relationship we have has made him a happier horse, and he has the pony for companionship.

When we lost my daughters horse I was really worried about mine who was then left just him and a little companion (non-ridden) In actual fact they were absolutely fine and got on better than they ever had before. It was always my horse and daughters pony were best friends and little pony got left out so I was surprised how easy it was.

I lost my old boy lately so just two highlands now. Younger one is fine alone. Older one seems fine too, though I've experimented less with him!

I've got two at home, no other horses in sight or hearing. There are 400 cattle here so are other animals about just no other equines, one of mine loves the cows the other doesn't. Mine are quite happy as a pair, you can ride one and leave the other behind without a problem. My mum also had two, she would have a riding horse and a youngster to bring on and did that for years without problem.

I'm the same as you! a 4yr 16'2 and 29 yr old 15'1 and a 31 inch mini! its not enough, I need more! not just because I'm a horse collector, but because my 4yr old is becoming the devil, he really needs another younger house to play with, to take out some of his energy on, so he can leave the old girl alone! cant afford another though, as the 29yr old is on 4 cushings tablets a day, which cost more than my livery!

I had 2 and felt bad when I rode one and left the other on his own. So have 3 now. Problem solved! A companion horse from WHW so no extra riding to do, just extra poo picking 😊

I have two - one retired, one companion. It works because they are together. When they first met I could do stuff with one, without the other. Now they are so attached they call constantly if seperated - for instance turning out one at time, they stress and call to each other.

I have two at home. It's fine. They're both fine in the stable, hardcore turnout or tiny grass paddock while the other one goes out riding (the gelding neighs a bit), but get silly if left in the big field. My mare is a bit soppy over my gelding, but was like that even when we had another gelding (she wasn't interested in him and acted as though she was alone if left out with him and "her" gelding taken away). I haven't taken them both to a show for years, but expect there would be a bit of calling if I did.

I have two at home, an ID that I do everything on and a TB x Trak that is not being ridden at the moment. They seem quite happy, the retired one has to come in when I go off somewhere but is used to it now and only calls a little.
I think it's a matter of repetition until they calm down and my two are very chilled now.

I have three at the moment, but one is on loan and is due to go back shortly. I have always kept my horses at home and have often had just two.

I will leave my horses alone and/or in the stable, they soon get used to it. The only aspect I have sometimes had trouble with when having just two is when I take both of them competing together - it takes nerves of steel to leave one in the trailer to begin with!

I have two since I lost my older mare - my riding mare and the companion. The little companion is dealing with being left in the stable when I ride my mare really well so I'm hoping I can stay with just the two.

I have two, my older girl and a mini companion. Works well as they love each other and mini comes in when I ride. Planning a third next year as mine will retire and worried how that will work.

Have always had two at home. Currently one is fine left but stoopid TB needs to be in his stable with lots of distractions and radio left on when other goes without him.
