Whoose rugged up non clipped horses yet??

I came back from florida to find Buzzz has started growing his winter woollies already

he'll be full clipped in the next few weeks when my saddle omes back from the menders.
He's got a light weight turn out on in the day and a thermatex on at night for now,
I dont want to have to clip a wooly mamoth

My thin-skinned boy has a light weight on when it's chilly. He started to drop weight so the rug had to come out.

I should add that the other three, including the 3/4 TB are still naked and perfectly happy.
 
My boy is currently stabled, recovering from operation few months ago...I have started rugging him up at night in a light weight stable rug...I plan to clip him the when I have some time off in the next week or so, hence I wana keep him as non-hairy as possible!
 
Horses grow their coats according to the number of daylight hours, not how warm/cold they are, so all you'll have is a clean ned with a flat coat, not any less fluff....though it may look less I suppose because it is all squashed flat. Google horse coat day length and you'll get all kinds of scientific studies on it thrown up....
 
The TB's have light rain sheets on, the pony's (apart from one that will not be clipped so trying to stop his hair growing!) are all rugless.
 
Nope. Horrible mummy over here just took his fly rug off (as most of the blooming midges have bogged off for this year) as he isn't fluffing up under his rug as much as his neck. What does it do the next day? Piddle down ALL day for the first time in weeks! Aren't I a horrible mummy!
 
My TB has his light weight on although will be adding a LW stable as well, trying to keep him as warm as possible so he doesn't get too hairy as he isn't getting clipped this year.
 
ive put the lw rain sheet on my 6 year old as she came neighing up the field tonight and was really stiff- even bucked a few times- she gets tight in the back when she gets cold...
other two are decididly more bouncy in the field keeping warm but they may not have rugs on at all this winter...haha how cruel. may have to put one on the 3 year old actually as she is a super wimp. and the 19year old will have one if she drops weight by some miracle!
 
Yep, Darcy actually has been cold to touch, so he's been in light weights for the past week over night, and had a medium weight some nights when we have actually had a frost. Out in the day he has nothing unless its due to pee hard

mine are in no fill rain sheets! have clipped a few, still in no fill rain sheets not too hot in day and enough at night! depends on what area you are inand what natural shelter your fields have! natives are still naked!
 
My thin-skinned TB is out at night in either his light sheet, or, like last night when it POURED, in his winter weight. Nothing during the day though. He does tend to drop weight quite quickly if he gets cold.
 
Not yet - he still has all his hair, so he can bloody well use it. I think it's cruel to hug horses up to supposedly stop them from growing a coat :/
Oh, and he's a TB type and has been out all summer rugless 99% of the time in the pouring rain... he has no issue with it, and nor have I

mine is out in a middle weight rhino - has been rugged up at night for about a month now and during the day for about a week - nothing to do with stopping him growing a coat (would be lovely if he ever attempts it

) but he is shivering nd cold when I check him in the morning when without a rug - he is an absolute pansy but he has spent most of his life being stabled 23 hours a day or living in hotter climes so the english weather is a bit of a shock but every year it has got better by this time last year he was in his full neck turnout already
 
Mine is rugged day and night now,unless it is warm/sun shining by day,been pretty chilly up here(wind has made it feel quite nippy)

I rug for manageability and cleanliness,his coat always gleams threw the winter

and i love to put my hands under his rug and feel the warmth coming off him!!
 
Sol u can think what u want, buzz is the happeist and healthiest horse on my yard and has been with me for the last 4 years with out any problems so to be blunt i dont give a toss what u think, there are far crueler things going on than rugging up a horse when its cold.
 
I agree that the coats grow and shed according to light - however rugging affects the length of coat.

Mine are rugged and their winter coats will be thinner (less of a step when I clip) than if I leave rugging till later.
 
Milly is in a leightweight now at night as she is still out 24/7 but Myrtle being exmoor x shetland is rugless and getting to be a hairy little beast!
 
No, although it's a bit miserable, it's not at all cold by horse standards yet. The stabled one gets dry when he comes in, the two that live out have to be tough and are used to it.
 
my unclipped horse has basically been rugged all summer, he feels the cold and when he gets cold he's a nightmare. if its warm he obviously doesn't wear a rug but he doesn't even have a hint of a winter coat coming yet which is good cos he needs to be sedated to be clipped. I haven't allowed my horse to overheat and he's happy so i don't see what s wrong with rugging him up its not like he's stood sweating all day
 
how is it cruel to rug a horse to stop it growing its coat????

my tb has also lived out all summer without a rug and been fine- however she has an event at the end of the month i don't want to have to clip her for as she is having October off.
so she's wearing a rug now.

would be far crueller to expect her to gallop around the event v.hairy or chuck her out in October for a rest clipped out.
