if your horses are still out 24/7 is there anything extra i shuld be doin other than picking feet out, checking rugs, breaking ice on trough and giving hay every day?
and who keeps there horses out even in this and who has naked horses out in this?

Mine are out 24/7 4 with rugs 1 without, but they are all natives... they get haye twice a day and water de-iced. Although they are throughly checked twice a day i dont touch their feet as they are not shod so snow falls out naturally. Not had any problems so far..

Mine are all out still. They have a round bale feeder with haylage, so plenty to eat. I'm not doing anymore than you. checking rugs, I have one who is naked but she is a moorland pony and rather chubby at the moment. I'm giving them a little extra feed and have included a warm sugarbeet breakfast

. Mine are barefoot so the snow doesn't compact in their feet. They are all coping very well and one of them is 30!

I have two liveries who I ocassionaly do full livery for. These horses are stabled at night. My stables are in a very open concrete barn. I think my outdoor horses are warmer really at least they can move around - and they get to watch all the sledgers in the field opposite

Mine is out. Our yard is very flexible re in/out but water buckets are freezing so quickly indoors that most are out as they have access to running water. We have bir round haylage bales in the fields so horses are quite happy. I've just rugged mine right up and do daily checks like yourself

Mine is out with about 5 others. Round bale haylege in the field, and he is unshod so no snow build-up problems. I'm just off to do the 4hr round walk to check on him (I'm not chancing it in the car!). He is checked on for me anyway, but as it's the weekend I will go and do him myself and give him a couple of carrots. He has a MW rug on, and has so far been toasty in it.
The dog is about to get his legs walked off!!!

Our lot are

They do all have rugs on at the moment though!

Have hard feed in the morning followed by lots of haylage, and then another haylage feed during the day and one at night.
They stay plenty warm with lots to eat and natural shelter.

They are all barefoot apart from my boy (hopefully shoes off soon!) but i've been going up twice a day in this weather to make sure he's warm enough and to break the water buckets.

QR- Mine are out. Rugged or not according to age, condition and type. Ditto hard feed but all get haylage.

Make sure you remove ice, dont just break it. It will take much longer to re-freeze and give the horses longer to drink.

Mine is out ! MW rug , adlib hay breakfast of dengie and warm water and dinner as usual. He is looking a bit fed up that he can't eat the grass, but other than that he and his friend are perfectly happy!

I have 5 out naked and 1 rugged.
I hay and check water/hooves everyday.
They are happy as larry. They don't feel the cold as long as its dry like this

my 4yro is out 24/7 and v.happy.

he has a nice big rug and ad-lib haylage.

he gets hot speedibeet once a day with Topspec and i remove all ice from his trough and top up with hot water.

Mine live out 24/7 (and one isnt a native), I dont do anything other than what you've mentioned. I dont even need to pick out their feet just now as 2 are barefoot anyway and the 3rd is currently unshod so no snow gets stuck. They all have rugs on though even the natives (as they're old).

Mine were in at night but i am now a bit worried the shed roof will come down ! so have decided to leave them out they have plenty hay and cosy rugs and the water defrosted twice a day they also get a feed at night i really think they are happier out.

My girls are out naked (17yo IDxTB and her 2yo IDxTBxWB daughter).

Millie (my mare) hasn't been in work for the last few months because of hock problems so hasnt been clipped - the 2yo has never been clipped or rugged.

Haylage at night, hay during the day and two decent size feeds.

All good.

2 of ours are out, both with rugs on, one with a chaser clip. Both are mid twenties, the oldest one being a full TB. They get a hard feed (sugarbeet, coarse mix for taste and readigrass or alfa a) and prob about 4-5 sections of hay a day each.

They are fine, have very good coats. I pick out their feet (if I remember!) but they are both pretty hardy and used to a life outside.

suffolkangel what kind of dog is that in your siggy the one with the large ears i rather like him x

4 out, two TB's, 1 Arab, 1 newfie.
TB 1 has stable rug, LW and h/w with neck, 20 month Arab has med weight no neck, same as newfie. TB 2 has fleece and m/w with neck.

All have adlib hay, although TB 1 and Arab are preferring to nose through snow for grass. TB's have feed of speedibeet, readigrass and Baileys no 4, the other two have a 1/4 scoop of the mix.

Lugging a container of warm water on a sledge for them from home, as tap is frozen (although nice man let me fill buckets from kitchen last night

)

We do unrug the youngster during day as she is a hot blooded filly and hoons around a lot!
Unshod bar one, so tend to leave their feet as they knock clumps out as they walk around or don't get packed.
Not a lot else you can do really, apart from rug checks, body/leg checks and hay/waters.

Yep my five arabs are out - ages from 3 to 22. They're all rugged to varying degrees and happy as larry. Haylage night and morning, lukewarm water provided morning and evening.

Poo picking is comical at the moment - unless you get it almost fresh it's impossible... though occasionally you can chip bits of it up with your fork

Mine are out with Rambo Duo rugs and a thermatex under rug as one is 21 yrs old and the other is a Hackney and feels the cold.
Out with 6 others and hay is given morning and night, water trough de iced and filled up and all are barefoot.

My two also get two feeds per day.

Mine are all living out, 4 with rugs 1 naked but hairy, shelter and plenty hay, feed and fresh water and are all coping fine, they are not venturing very far though just using the hardstanding and any tracks they and us have made. Asked a kind farmer friend yesterday to come and clear more space and a track through the field for us and today it is blizzarding AGAIN!!

My welshxarab pony is out. He is in his field with 2 other ponies. They have an area where they can shelter under the trees, a big hay round bale out and are fed once a day.

I'm also giving them big piles of redi grass and carrots and filling their water bucket up with warm water to keep it unfrozen for as long as possible!

I've also bought them a field mineral like which they really like,

Ours are all out still.

The 3 boys in HW rugs, and old girl in a HW rug, then the others are all naked still - 3 welsh d's and 1 tubby hairy pony!
smile.gif

ETA Hay in round bale feeder thing in the field and 2 feeds a day for most of them, couple of the welsh d's don't get fed but they are pretty well covered!

5 out, TB and two oldies all rugged up, highland and sec A unrugged. Lots of haylage and high fibre feeds made warm. They are all happy! Keeping the water troughs unfrozen is the biggest nightmare!

Mine are out all year round there all ruggrd up and lots of haylage and dont seem that bothered at mo none are dropping off. the biggest problem like alot of people is my tap and hoses are frozen so have to carry big plastic containers up field full of water from home < while trying not to stack it > lol.

The Spooky Pony is out naked, no hard feed; only hay in the round bale feeder. And the odd carrot. He's furry as a teddy bear, and toasty warm!

ATM the water trough supply is frozen, so we take turns wheeling water across. They're all pretty clever about breaking the ice.

He's barefoot, so I'm only needing to pick out after riding (and then only if we've been indoors).

My 13.2 newfie is out 24/7 but he as a native pony he is well designed to live out in the british weather. He gets very angry if he is stabled so he has to be out.

He is chaser clipped and has a HW rambo on and has lots of shelter in his fields (they have two fields in the winter) and he also has a wood he can go into.

Unfortunately he does not have ad lib hay (though if he did have it he would be huge quite quickly as he is a very good doer and as I can't exercise him in this weather that might be a problem) - He does get hay in the field and has 2/3 slices a day and he also has a half a small trug bucket of good doer chaff and 1/3 scoop of slim and healthy as well.

He shares a field with 8 other native ponies and small cobs and they all seem to be doing fine at the moment.
