Who's responsibility?

After a lengthly discussion with YO it looks like she's going to be given notice. It's a shame about the horse but once she's gone we'll notify BHS welfare.

Thanks :) For obvious reasons we're waiting until she goes before getting welfare involved.

She actually turned up tonight - gave her horse some hard feed but neglected to give him hay or water... Luckily I arrived afterwards and made sure he was fed and watered.

I am a bit confused are you saying she left her horse in its stable for three days without turning up or arranging alternative care and you just made sure it had water and occasionally some hay?

If so that is terrible it is not sufficient at all, the horse should be mucked out and feed every day and turned out not left abandoned in its stable for days on end.

That just would not happen at our yard, YO would do the jobs and the livery would be charged.

It is the responsibility of the owner to sort out alternative care if they are unable to come to the yard and are on DIY. If YO was away who did this livery think would look after her horse. It sounds like she needs to be on a full livery yard and if she behaves like this on other yards she will soon be in trouble or thrown off.

Hes in the field but the grazing is very poor so it nees supplementing with hay. Normally the YO does it but she was away and told the livery this. The yard doesnt offer part or full only DIY - something livery is well aware of! She has no money so full livery is out the question. Personally I think she should sell the horse before she ruins him,

This sort of behaviour drives me mad and sadly i have witnessed it all too often. I can't imagine not seeing my boys or making sure they were seen to even if it was ridiculous hours either end of the day. But i suppose others dont see their horses as their responsibility just as an inconvenience at times.

PM me after she leaves and I'll give you my info. :)

That's exactly what she did at mine too - just give (some other livery's) hard feed and not bother with hay or water. Watched her one night take the excess hay, which was all wet and had been there for a few days wrapped around my elecric post, and give that to her horse.

Firstly, I would like to say I'm appalled, disgusted and devastated by this thread!

A BIG "thank you" to the person who alerted me to this as the horse in question belongs to me! He is on LOAN to the "person" mentioned in the thread! I'm afraid I cannot say to much publically in case this jeopardises things.

Please could the original poster get in touch with me (dont know if you can private message on here as I've only just registered because of the above situation).

Thank you to everyone who has voiced concern for my poor boy. I will keep you updated:(

Thank you, its been such a worry for the last week or so, trying to trace his whereabouts and whats been happening. Would certainly like to swing for someone at the moment!
I will be back online later

This sounds rather like something going on near me right now, is this indevon by any chance, axminster area? If it is I will have info for you,if not sorry

I have seen this kind of behaviour a number of times, both with loaned and owned horses and what I fail to understand is, why do these people have a horse?

This case is even worse, as the poor owner had no idea what was happening to her horse and found out via this forum (and thank goodness she found out).

I just cannot understand the mentality of a person who takes on the responsibility and care of a horse and then treats that horse as an inconvenience.

QI, good luck in getting the matter sorted ASAP and please let us know the outcome.

NeilM in some cases it gets worst, the one near me is worse as they come, as she's got the horse up for sale. We are trying to track down the horses owners at the mo

Have you contacted MHOL? just a small chance that horse could be registered as on loan? or get someone you know to go as if to view for sale to get the horse details?

Hi Guys, Many thanks for the support! :)
I really want to do things "properly" to get him home, but red tape is making things rather difficult to say the least.Thank goodness I've found out what was happening. I will keep you all posted.
Thanks again to everybody who is helping

Just read the whole thread. :(

Quite intesting- so sorry that your horse is being treated like this. I hope you get him back safely and please keep us all updated as to what happens.

QI, I do hope you get your horse back soon. one of my horses was nearly sold whilst on loan, fortunately I got the horse back but it was a very stressful experience, and I vowed never to loan a horse out again. I do hope you recover him soon.

I'd just like to say a big 'well done' to Pet-ID for passing on the message, and tracking the owner of the horse down! :D

And for HHO bringing people together :)

In case people were worried the horse has been fed and watered every day (just not by the person who should have been doing it  )

Thats terrible.

She needs reporting but as the hirse is on a yard im not sure they will do much.

Only other thing is to take on looking after the horse full time and charge the owner for the work.

I have exactly the same problem which i raanted about yesterday!
Its so annoying and im just a "livery" at the yard so there is not much i can sayto her myself. But i would definetly inform your YO about an abused horse, because not going up to your hose 1 a day when stable and leaving it with no fresh water, is dusgusting and is what i see abuse.Infast im pretty sure the Rspca would have something to say. My YO would personally ask her to leave and call the Rspca before they left, as my yards just very strict like that! But her horse is her responsibilty, unless its on loan, then the bes person to contact wpuld be the owner :)

Not quite the same rant really! Your rant was about not working in according to your standards and that you "despise" not using leg protection.
