Since Ellie's winter coat has been coming through, she's developed a definite white patch - but not where you would expect. I dont have a pic yet but it's basically right above her stifle, where her leg joins her tummy (great explanation, huh!) It started with small flecks of grey, and now looks like she has been flicked with a white paintbrush - in total, the area that is greying is about a handspan in width and depth.

It obviously isnt saddle/rugs etc because nothing has close contact with that area - and the other side is not greying at all. So is it just age?? Is my poor girl going grey at the grand old age of 14!?!?!

If I can get a pic later, I will, just to see what everyone thinks - I just know it has baffled me as I've never noticed anything like it before!

Hey there!

You can just about see one of Sandy's white patches at the top of her foreleg here

She was a very dark purply liver chestnut when she was younger. She ended up Chestnut roan as you can see!

The white patches didn't turn up until age 15 ish. I put her greying out down to the fact that she was 3/4 arab. May be wrong though!

ETS I think you can just about see the one on the top of her quarters too.

Oh golly, that is interesting! I really dont want a bay roan though.....

Funnily enough, Ellie is part Arab too (although we're not too sure how much - could be as much as 1/2, could be as little as 1/8). Does that have an impact on colour then??

I'm pretty sure that the grey in Arabs in very dominant. I really don't know how long they normally take to change though.

I'm sure an awful lot are born chestnut but turn grey, just don't know how fast!

Are either of the parents grey ??

We dont know - in spite of many enquiries, I've never been able to find out much about her sire, and her dam is practically unknown - all her papers show is the name 'Lola' - nothing else!

I *believe* but dont know for certain that her sire was brown, and this is her grandad:

Thats a shame. It would have made it easy if the colour of either parents were known

Do you know what colour he was when born (or have any pictures of his foal coat). If I remember rightly that should help. Though I'm guessing you don't have those either if you don't know the breeding

Well I got her as a 5 year old and she was as bay then as she is now!! (see my signature

) but no, although we know who her sire was, she was imported and I've found it very hard to get any information on her as a baby

Shame really, I'd love to have seen some old pics!

Penny has flecks of grey on a few parts of back and around wither area, its not been causes by injuries so she is 16 and a chestnut TB mare who like her mum here is going grey with age.... Clairol loving care comes to mind lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 12yo chestnut mare has developed a few white patches recently - including matching, symmetrical ones just above her stifles on both sides

I don't use rugs with leg straps so they're definitely not caused by anything rubbing.

She has several others around her shoulders and hindquarters too. I'm not liking the sound of this though - I'm hoping she just ends up like a reverse appaloosa (like toytown lol) rather than going grey....
