Phew, and I thought the monkeys' blue faces were a pigment of my imagination!Much as I would love a deep turquoise mane and tail on a black horse, the fact is that the only pigment mammals can produce is melanin which gives us the range of colours we are familiar with from black through browns and reds to pale colours. Other animals can use the pigments in food they eat to colour themselves
