Why cant I find a new horse?

Looking at your advert ashy, I'd say the reason you're not getting much response is because you're extremely limited in what you want - basically you're looking for a perfect horse!

I don't think I've ever come across a horse that has everything you're asking for - and while I think your budget is okay, a horse like that is one in a million I think.

Even the nicest horses I've ridden have been a little spooky, sharp and had the odd buck at times. I've only ever met a couple that almost never spook, buck, nap, rear etc and they would fail your requirements for not being snaffle mouthed and being older than 10. On top of that you want something that is well schooled and forward going, with a decent competition record.

I think basically there are horses very close to what you want out there but you need to be prepared to compromise on certain points. If you're not actually as fussy as the ad seems then I think you should reword it, as I think you'll be putting people off who have fantastic horses but won't want to reply because they might spook if a bird flies out of the hedge or take a bit of a pull if they're feeling fresh.

Ditto this.... You won't find a nice competition horse which is compleately push button, with a different new rider you may find a few differences of opinion initially!

Are you a fairly nervous rider? Because this will narrow your market even more....

Also remember most private people are selling because the horse isn't quite right, so don't rule out a good dealer!

You would definitely pick up a nice young horse in Ireland at the moment for that sort of money. I wouldn't really advise the sales rings though unless you are very confident. How about some of the producers of nice young event horses. There are plenty and prices have come down a lot. Have you any contacts over here?

I have to agree that you are looking for the near impossible - I think any one that says theirhorse does not ever buck, spook, fizz up is telling porky pies!

I know of a horse that would fit your requirement, 10 yrs old, 16.1, ID, good lateral work, good BSJA record at 1.10, hunted with 14 yr old girl but also field mastered over big country and located in the scottish borders BUT they want at least £12 K for it as it is absolute machine and horses like that are like gold dust!

Thanks everyone! Yes I know my ad sounds like Im looking for the perfect horse and I know none of them are perfect, but the people that do reply must therefore have something pretty special, so that was my tactic. ;-) I have actually just had a lovely girl call me in the last couple of days with something that sounds wonderful so I am now planning a trip down to Lancashire, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottingham this weekend to see six horses so I really hope there is a gem amongst them and that the weather doesnt take a turn for the worse! I will have to ask if she saw this thread! Thanks to all you nice people who have been so encouraging and helpful and coming up with new places to look when I was just feeling a little downhearted and frustrated. Will let you know how I get on. :-)

I spent ages looking and also had the same budget and thought it seemed stupid that I had a decent budget and no horse, persevered and found one in the yorkshire post in the end, after looking in all the 'normal' places and he was under my budget too, just keep looking, especially through word of mouth

magic magpie can i say yes some do end up with us for a reason, other peoples lack of knowledge and understanding. others through financial problems but a lot of ours have come back to us as previous owners ahave outgrown them, either size wise or in experience and they ve bought another off ouselves . but the majority of ours start out as our own homebred ones.
so stop putting all of us in same bracket as others
sorry for hijacking your post ashy!
best of luck in your search
