Why do people like XC?

I like both but will jump bigger sj as I'm not the best at seeing a stride so like to know it will fall down if I get it massively' wrong

H Is Also very spooky jumping and a stopper so going with too much pace into something can be alarming esp when he is trying to bog off on a sponsored ride or similar though he flew over 2 wooden gate type things in the lead in a large field this year which was fun

Would love to hunt him but I'm too chicken :p

Yard used to have some xc fences going between the fields he used to refuse to do them but last year he finally got the idea and it was exhilarating as he was really taking me

But then jumping something that looks scarily wide or high sj is also v adrenaline inducing, even though yo (who is an sjer says it isn't as big as I thought :p )

I've only jumped little xc (2ft max) but love doing it in pairs, if I'm with the right partner. Far more time to sort yourself out after each jump and just great fun! My little fjord gets nappy doing sj but pairs xc and she's as happy as Larry. It probably helps that I've been lucky enough to do a very friendly mini hunter trials where you get loads of support for trying.

I agree with the op! I much prefer jumps that fall down.

I've been riding for 25 years and never ever jumped a XC fence! Tho fellow rc members are trying to persuade me to try!

Popping a log in the woods on a hack is one thing but actually, willingly directing your horse at one of those things.................... You are all MAD! :D

I do however love watching XC. And regularly am a crossing point steward at events!

Yay!! There are some sane people on this thread haha! Oh yes my friend is dying to get me back up there but i have well and truly put the foot down!
Yup, i enjoy jumping the odd logs we come across in the woods but there not exactly big and scary!

They are all mad! :D i'm the same i enjoy watching it but thats about it!

I used to be a bit of a puff then I got my old mare & she was unstoppable xc would happily pop over intermediate fences with her eyes closed she got me brave
Then i worked producing & I actually prefered xc'ing the babies to sj'ing them

I now have a 4 year old who I've had from a 2 year old broke her myself only been xc schooling once & we both loved it jumped all the 80s & some 90s with no issues cant wait to get out again next year

When I was a child I dreamed I'd be an event rider, sadly I realised I lack 2 things guts and money! My OH use to event up to Novice level ( he'd like to get back into it with our youngster) I'd go to events with him and watch him and his mare go from the start box and then I'd run to the finish and be on pins, listening to the commentary , till they came home safe!

My mare loves jumping, I do show jump her when my blood is up and I'd love to give her a go XC but she gets so excited, it terrifies me! Think I'll stick to dressage, chicken that I am!

My old horse whos now retired was lead huntsmans horse before i got him and would litrally jump anything that he was pointed at. I let my mum hunt him over the winter and she did some xc and he was actually awesome at it, yet even with him it never crossed my mind that i actually wanted to give it a shot! Then the time i do get my arm twisted to give it a bash hes retired! Go figure! lol

I think i was always destined to want to showjump, i remember my first lesson i asked when i would be able to jump, i can't ever remember a time i wanted to event!

i think you've got your approach to xc all wrong...poncy sj canter =huge sj jump

I would consider myself a showjumper but xc is just exhilerating..

you've got to be up for and have everything in it to enjoy/be successful xc

I'm not keen on XC as you have time to mull what you're jumping and therefore stress about it.
Now hunting? That is terrifying and thrilling in equal measure!

I know my approach was all wrong, I just couldn't help it, I don't need to be up for it and have everything in it to enjoy/be successful because I doubt I will put myself in the situation again anytime soon lol!

I spent my childhood dreaming of riding at Badminton and galloping around XC courses thinking I was Virginia Leng, but when I turned 18 something happened and self preservation set in. I almost ruined my horse with my nerves of jumping cross country. I ended up having some XC lessons with an event rider and had to make the decision that for whatever reason I just did not like going cross country anymore and it was not worth it. Shortly after I gave up horses completely. I still don't know what happened but I just lost my mojo for it all.

I had a share for the last 2 years and he was a great horse, got back into popping some logs on hacks, then hired the yards XC course, went to a bigger XC course, did a Hunter Trial and then went out hunting. Mojo came back, no idea why!

One thing I did do last year which was BRILLIANT was jump cross. If you like your poles but fancy a bit of the cross country thrill then definitely have a go, I was grinning all day and for the rest of the week!

It is a horrible thing to lose confidence, before the job that I'm in now I was having a horrible time nothing seemed to be going right and half the time I would be coming out the ring close to tears or in tears it was awful and my then boss didn't help matters and my confidence hit rock bottom, was going to give up when this new opportunity came about and I was given the chance and everything just seemed to click into place and I have learnt so much from being here. I'm so glad it came along at that time as I don't know what I would be doing today of it hadn't!
Still pondering on what went wrong probably lol!
I went with a friend to watch jump cross and actually said I would maybe give that a bash one day. Maybe.

Jumpcross looks awesome :D

Its about 14 years since I did any kind of XC but Id lovee to give it a go with my baby horse in the future....Im fairly sure he will love it.
Im nowhere near as brave as I used to be though :o

Having a horse in gallop and jumping out of their stride with no adjustment from you is one of the best feelings on earth :D

This!!! On a horse you trust it's just simply amazing, and I'm a dressage girl by heart.

However I haven't done it since becoming a mum. Don't have the horse that I trust any more and that is the key for me. I used to ride an ex racer who used to bail out of a fence at the last minute. I thought I enjoyed it at the time, but looking back, even though I was a reckless teenager, I didn't.

Cuz its amazing!!! I have way more confidence hooning over xc fences than i ever will sj!!! Dont get me wrong ill jump 1m10- 1m15 sj i just get all nervous before hand whereas with xc i dont!! It is all about how u ride it thou, u need to be forward going - not necessaily galloping and u have to trust ur horse 100%. If u sj canter into a xc fence u will most probably fall off... I did this summer!! :P but it takes practise and time to gain confidence. Ive done it since a kid but at 15 i majourily lost my confidence after a horse threw me off 5x in 20 mins!! It took another yr and a half and a very paitient little mare to help me get it all back, if ur nervous dont worry about it just take it all slowly pop one log and when u feel ready pop a different one and then link them together, it doesnt matter if the company u are with are jumping 3ft plus it doesnt mean u have to!! Xc can be amazing fun and if ur willing to help build urs and ur horses confidence with it then eventually u will have a ball and wander what all the fuss was about!! Perhaps try following a more confident horse and rider over a few small fences that way u tend to concentrate less on the actual fence more on the horse in front :) making it a tad more fun :) im about to spend all of next yr bullying a friend into liking xc.... First up a forest trip where i just happen to know of a few fallen logs!! :)

On the 1 hand;
Because b1 will never stop so I can take my glasses off and steer vaguely at obstacles and its a rush!
Or;
B2 won't jump anything he can't see through easily but will tank flat out broncing in a big open space so I can think of little I'd hate more!
