Why do people not do the right thing?? or do they think they are

I disagree that an older horse shouldn't be rehomed, I find the thought quite bizarre. Lots of old horses can live their days out happily with a new owner. Going by your thoughts that the horse could end up in a bad home, well how can you sell ANY horse of ANY age then? I think its wrong to PTS perfectly healthy horses.

Personally I have kept both my "old" horses (16 and about 26) but thats just because Im perfectly happy looking after them and I couldn't bare to part with them. I am in the process of rehoming one of my others - a 16yo who is only good for gentle hacking. But I am offering him on permanent loan only, so I can ensure he comes back to me if the person he goes to no longer wants him, this is one way to ensure his future. But of course some people can't do this.

no one is saying PTS because they cant be bothered, its because there is such a risk that an older horse (who is classed as no value if its advertised as free) will not be looked after as it should be. have a look at the cases on h & h news, this is how some horses end up and they are not all old .. its about time that everyone realised that although there are good homes an old horse may not be lucky. unless you know the person you are loaning your 16 yr old to there is no guarantee that they will honour the agreement as is shown by many posts on here where a loan horse has been sold on..
