Why do people "shout" their horses from 100 yards before the gate?

i used to call my boy by his little nickname...so he would know it was me...he would call back and come to the gate, no other horse would listen he was in a herd of about 15, they were all soo calm...
my mare now knows the sound of my car when i pull up as she's in a paddock in the yard and she calls for me...bless her!
yes it can be annoying if the herd are excitable, if i know they are i wouldn't call just walk over quitely

it sounds like a bigger issue on this yard TBH than people just yelling their horses. i yell for mine- sometimes they trot to the gate and sometime they ignore me...have not got someone else's horse coming to me ever from me calling them...i have had horses chasing me up the field when i've walked down to get them though...hence my preference for not walking down the field if i can help it....this yard sounds to me like all the horses are hungry and stuck in a strict routine. i don't have a routine so my horses wouldn't get stressy at the gate as they have no idea whether they are are coming in at 1pm or 7pm....

I shout on my lot and they usually come to gate. Most of our fields are generally good only the ones that you call on come tho mates horse comes when I call and mines go to her.

Mine is waiting by the gate for me at 5pm. Woe betide me if I'm late.

And yes there is plenty of grass to eat and she does have company. She just likes her dinner.

We can get stampede at this time of year as some horses start to be brought in for the night and the others think they should be too and they're getting hungry with grass gone. I'm not too keen on the calling of horses when they are in a big herd as it has led to injury before where I am. It's a b*gger if you've walked up through 2 fields to get your horse and someone calls their's from the gate and the whole lot take off, I just slip the rope and meet mine at the gate as there's no way I can hold him from taking off with the others. What I don't understand is people who call their horses from the gate when they know they're not going to come...tends to break the peaceful early morning or evening at the yard!

I can see the point of calling if they are all yours, and I can see the point of letting them all through - dont agree with this personally, but when you are trying to pick one out of the bunch i think it is a little bit different.

The yard i was at today had an L shaped gateway - so the horses get bottled necked - which is why i said one of them will break a leg. One poor girl with a low rank horse was leading her horse through this with a whip and was wearing a hard hat, she looked terrified - so maybe it isnt just me that thinks its a bit dangerous.

Sounds like there are bigger issues than people calling their horses TBH!

I call mine, even in the depths of winter, if he was starving and came flying up the field, he is not rude enough to go over someone or barge another horse out the way.
If I was in the field and the other horses started charging around, again, he has enough manners to continue walking at my side.

Ours hear the gate, see the car and walk over to semi near the gate, depends on if they have a lot of food or not.. Most of the time you rarely have to even call them, they just stand and wait (don't have far to walk anyway). In the winter they can come trotting or cantering over if hungry but they know the pecking order and don't try to purposely hurt one another..

However I suppose it depends on the yard, owner, routine and also the horse

Laziness, I think. I hate it too, and always go into the field and collect him from wherever he happens to be.

Sometimes, if I walk down with one of the other liveries, I have to plead with them not to incite a riot by yelling "Come on" at the top of their voice until we have a cavalry charge, and they look at me as if I'm mad.

The gallop across the field is bad enough but its the rapid stop at the gate that really spooks me.

I wistle mine - what's wrong with that???????? Mine live out so they have 23 hrs a day to do their thing, and I want to get them in as soon as - not spend ages faffing around catching them!!! Mine always come straight over as they know they get a reward after work- I can't work out how people think I am lazy for not going all the way down the very bottom of the field when mine come to a whistle- to me it's good training and the fact that the horse is happy to come over to be caught and worked means something surely????? After all we expect our dogs to come to call - it's called obedience.

ETS we have individual turnout...

I used to shout to my horse at a yard (field) he was in. The field was so large that it took 30 minutes to walk across it to the far side. And it was as wide as it was long, there were 16 horses in it and no stampede when I called out my horses name, it just saved a lot of time when he came towards me as a I walked towards the field.

As other have said I think there are other problems with field/ gateway described by the OP than just yelling for your horse.
An 'L' shaped gate way with any sort of stock is asking for trouble in my opinion!
I do agree with some that it can disturb the peace and given that horses have quite good hearing you shouldn't to yell that loud or before you get to the gate! And there is nothing wrong with a wistle.

The only exception is when my horse was in a field that = 1 very large hill, to save treking a good 2km over it to catch him, assuming he was in sight, I would yell to call him down from the yard.

I shout our 2 and im very lucky if i get any resposne from them at all, they normally just look and keep on munching,
and when they do come up the field mum had changed there rugs and i get them mixed up, so end up shouting the wrong one to get a move on and she is already coming down the field :P.
(why did they have to look the same

I whistle at mine but he is out on his own so don't worry about being trampled. However, he does come with a health warning so I make sure I'm the other side of the gate in case he gallops racehorse speed at the gate and mows me down!!

What is this "shouting" that you speak of? As soon as my car appears on the drive, both ponies are either at the gate adjoining the two fields (as they are at the mo, because they know step 1 of my visit is them having a proper grass fix on the richer field), or stood with noses pointed at the 'magical feed room'. No calling required, there! On the very rare occasion I get there and they're right down the field (out of sight), I wait until I'm at the feed room before giving a whistle. THEN I get a thunder of hooves, but there's only two of em. Anyone with me is told to STAND BACK!!! ;D

We call ours and they amble down. The mare stands at the gate and the two boys wait patiently until she is out of the way and then they nudge forward. No issues at our yard.

There are 7 Horses/Ponies in the field my horses are in and I always shout them when I want to catch them. Only 4 of them will actually amble over, usually so slowly that I end up walking halfway up the field to try and hurry whoever I want to catch up. Never had a problem.

We also feed them all out in the fields, each one has there own designated feeder that they are always fed from, when the buckets are brought to the gate they usually go and stand by their feeder. Again never had a problem.

I call mine in the summer, to get her attention - she (and the others!) are usually fat and happy, and she ambles over in her own time. In the winter (ok, any time she's cold and hungry), I don't have to call her, she sees me and goes loop the loop and ends up at the gate. She only does it when she sees me, ignores anyone else, and she's in a small group where she is the boss. Sometimes the other 2 will come to the gate, but they are small ponies who know to move out of her way.

If she was in a larger group, or with horses I didn't know (or knew to be naughty!), I wouldn't call, I'd just walk out quietly to get her.

I shout for mine but only from the gate. If I go in to catch her one of the other horses bites her so I prefer to stay out of the way cos if she ambles over to the gate for me, he doesn't bother her. Though nine times out of ten she doesn't even look up

i shout to my boy when i first pull up in the car (we park right near the gate), he will generally start wandering over to see me as will the 3 mares he shares with.
never had a stampede, they all know their place in the pecking order.
as long as the horses are happy together then any kicking will normally be just high spriits and not come to anything.

I always call her in summer partly because it saves an extra bit of walk and partly because I like to watch her trot up the field to see how she's feeling.

Same here.

I shout to Monty, he will look up and then go back to eating!! He is only out in a herd of 3 though, hasn't once come over when called (unless he see's the feed bucket!! - and that was when he was out on his own)

this is happening on our yard now i whistle mildred and she came bellowing over last night followed (but not beaten lol) by about 5 others.
I always whistle her she normally saunters over and my friends horse never comes no matter what, so as she walks down the field mildred always checks her on the way past to see if she has a treat and then walks to me.

after the chaos yesterday i'v dsecided she is hungry and will be bringing mildred in at night now even though shes still overweight
smirk.gif

to be honest iv never known there be an accident.
i'll always call her- cant help neurotic horses, I know for sure Mildred doesnt bother if its not me because shes well fed and on a routine.... its the others that arn't.
not that anyone on my yard has ever moaned about people calling their horses?
sounds like people are winding up the horses on your yard whoop whooping????

I call mine from the gate, by name, because I EXPECT my horse to come to me when I call her. The only time I ever have to walk out to her is when the wind is blowing the wrong way and she really can't hear me. She plods in steadily and on the odd occasion that someone else tags on, they generally just walk behind her. When she gets to the gate, if there are any other horses already there they get out of her way! I don't mind bringing her in on a headcollar, but I've had more trouble with horses galloping past us than if she comes in unaccompanied, and if you have your back to the others flying up behind you, I don't think you are in a very safe position. When I'm facing my horse I can see exactly what is going on in the entire field.

I call mine when driving past the field. He comes down and waits by the gate for me. I don't see what the problem is? All the horses in the field go for a good gallop when they want to - galloping up to the gate is no different.

All mine come to call. Much safer IMO. I'd rather be splatted in mud standing on the opposite side of the gate, than be caught on their side as they hurtle down the field towards me.

Milly comes to the gate as soon as she sees me or my little girl get out of the car
smile.gif
it makes me smile everytime, especially as i got her from someone who said she was a pain to catch!
