Why do people tie up outside

I tie up outside if it's warm and sunny because my horses love the sun! It's also lighter outside than in so easier to see what you're doing. It's also more sociable if there are two of you working or tacking up at the same time. My big mare is also ultra nosy so if she's tied up in her stable she gets upset if she can't see out to check what might be happening.

When the weather is nice i enjoy grooming, tacking up etc outside my stable. I also leave Chico tied with a haynet when i need to bring him in before i have mucked out, it's much easier to do without him in there!

I tie up outside if I am mucking stable out, horse is getting shod, I am tacking him up, grooming, taking pictures, washing horse, if vet is checking horse etc.

:)

Because unless it's a quick flick with a brush, he loathes being groomed as much as he loves rolling. And if he's loose in a box and you try to groom properly, he marched round in circles and drives you demented.

Also, outside the light is better to check for nicks and cuts while I'm grooming :)

unless it's horrid weather i usually tie up outside. I'm not entirely sure why, just think it's better to see and more room, and the wind blows any dust from grooming away rather than it just settling back on a different part of the horse. And i find that most horses seem happier being groomed outside too for some reason.

I dont have stables, but alongwith the comments above, it must be better for the horse's lungs not having to inhale grooming and mucking out dust.

Well if mine won't stand up in the box I would tie up inside, I muck out with the horse turned out. Also don't expect the farrier to stand out in rain etc. I often see on other people's yards, horses tied up, getting in other peoples way and wonder about the rationale behind it.

Defo, the dust. I have a real thing about it. In his bed.
Plus loose hair from his mane and tail. And it means his bed doesn't get all scrunched up.

Doesn't sound a very well planned yard if there's no where to tie up without them being in the way?

I've been on numerous yards, lots of people do it and it has never been a problem apart from the odd horse which will kick out if anyone is near it. It's nice for the horse to have a change of scenery and get some sun or a breeze on their backs. Just because people tie up outside doesn't mean they can't do all of the things you mention if they wanted to.

I agree with the getting in the way bit!. Ive seen this in American barn style stabling where the passageway is just too small for horses tyed up outside.

My yard is a traditional square shaped brick built stable block and there's plenty of space outside for tying.

somethingorother, I presume that the horses you are talking about are on restricted turn out, if they need a change of scenery :) Ours are out 12 hoursish in winter and 24/7 in summer. I can see the dust argument, but regularly see posts on here about neighbouring horses getting in the way when tied up and hear others on livery yards complaining, perhaps they are all on badly planned yards, I couldn't say.

Well, if you don't have stables you don't have a choice for one. We do have stables, our own yard, but other than winter ours live out 24/7 and, when I bring them in to groom etc I would automatically tie up outside.

Mine is in overnight in winter but if I am riding then, to groom I will tie him outside as opposed to in. If it is belting down or very windy I may keep him inside. To be honest though they're easier to groom outside, you can see better, have more room and the dust/dirt isn't going in the stable. I am asthmatic as well so it's much better to groom in the open air - and nicer on a lovely warm, summers day.

Oh and also my horse is more of a pain in the stable than out cos he just wants to get out - much easier to not have to keep unbolting the door to get in and out.

We have a nice big American Barn and its easier to tie up outside their stables as they are still in barn just not in individual stable. I used to have to tie Koko up in his stable cause if he got loose he would go exploring whereas I know Andy will just stand there.

Ditto J_T :D

Plus it helps to teach her how to stay tied up when there are things going on around her :D

I always tie up outside for anything really, probably because I got really badly kicked by a mare when I was grooming her in a stable many years ago, also got cornered once by a TB brood mare, kind of like a bit of space around me now I'm older & wiser!

Mainly, because the lights in the stables are poor. It also means I can supervise people and keep an eye on what's going on. It's also much nicer to not be flicking all the mud into their bed :)

I read something by Carl Hester where he said the horses stable is his chill zone, his dinner table and his bed and so everything is done out the stable to allow the horse to fully relax when in.

I'm one of those terrible people who doesn't just tie up outside, I tie my mare up outside on the main yard. Why? She likes seeing the comings and goings, and I like to muck out with no horse in there. She is very, very polite and moves out of my way, but I still prefer her not to be in, and she also spends enough time in her box in the winter!

Bizarrely, I tend to groom and tack up etc IN the box, despite being in an American Barn where I could do all of those things outside the stable!

marco hates me doing things in the stable with him in there, i think he feels claustraphobic, he is a much happier tied on the yard, he loves to watch whats going on, and his stable faces away from the drive, so he can't see very easily down the drive without craning his neck, so when he's tied outside he loves to stand and look down the drive to see who's coming!

its also much easier to see for grooming and to tack up and i find it much easier to muck out with him outside his stable. I can't turn him out while i muck out because i get there so early there are no other horses to go out with him, so i muck him out then put him back in with his breakfast to eat and then someone else turns him out for me.

we always do outside 24 hr grass livery so no choice, always have a rug on standby just incase it suddenly rains whilst in tack...........

..now I might be wrong, but its a safety issue why its done outside!!

a stable/box is a dangerous place to be if a horse spooks etc.......

My grandad always told us to do everything outside, where you are able to move away quickly, as you never know what might happen!

I do know of a girl crushed in a box when her horse spooked whilst being tacked up, and I know of a horse who hung itself on the light fitting when it reared with its bridle on!!, horror stories yes, but if my horses spook then they might break bale twine, and scoot around a bit, but they are less likely to hurt themselves or anyone else for that matter.

Because I don't have a stable, so there's no inside to tie him up in! :D If the weather's really bad, I can borrow one for a little bit.

Just to throw a wrench in the works: from a Canadian perspective, when I moved here I thought you were all mad for tying up/tacking up inside the stables! I was brought up to bring the horse out of the stables and cross-tie it in the aisle of the (Amercian-style) barn.

Having had my head slammed into a concrete wall once when tacking up inside a stable (was wearing helmet, phew!), I had no reason to disbelieve what I'd grown up with. I tie up/tack up/groom inside stables frequently now, but still have to say I sometimes feel much safer with both me and the horse outside the stable.

I am on grass livery, so there are stables available for use (waaay more expensive), so I tie up outside. It's square block, so no way of getting in anyone's way and it's nice to feel the sun and watch what's going on. Also teaches youngster to tie up with things happening around her.
If the weather is bad, for farrier visits etc then I do use the stable (hardcore - no bedding in) as no charge for this. :)

I like to be able to groom in the field with/without headcollar, in stable - tied or loose and also tied up outside. - Monkey heads for tackroom if loose!!
In another yard - american barn style - the passageway was big enough that you could squeeze past horses in aisle. It was very relaxed and you knew the horses and which ones to take care with. If a horse kicked, generally it was not tied up outside stable.
We had no problems here whatsoever, though.

Each to their own. Some prefer to be in stable - some horses may also prefer that - and some prefer to be outsidee :)

I'm not on a yard so not going to get in anyones way!!

I tie up outside because it's easier to move around the horse to groom it rather than having to move it to and from because it's standing too near the wall for me to squeeze past.

And anyway, the lights' better outside!

the stable?
I do this if I am bathing, washing legs or anything else wet :D Otherwise I never do and am interested to know why people do this.

I have never really thought about it until now!

If the horse is in the stable then I would groom/tack up inside but if the horse was kept out then it would be tied up outside. I actually dont know why I do that! Habit I suppose!:) I have just always tied up outside. I will also bring a horse out of the box and tie up outside. In the main there will only be one on the yard, maybe two but in the past there were more. I think I did them in the boxes then.

Blimey...that was a LONG time ago!

You is making me feel old!:D:D:D

Or the opposite, on 24hr turn out. Which means they feel a bit cooped up if in a stable and can get a bit cranky. If it's raining or windy though then of course grooming etc is done in the stable. It's not really a big deal.

I'd not really thought about this either!

My 1 horse hates being in the stable so when Im trying to brush/ tack up etc its difficult as he jumps about and gets wound up- even worse if tied up inside.
He will stand perfect tied outside!

My rising 4year old was taught to tie up at 6 months when I had him, as it was safer to do some things with him outside tied up ie mucking out- not ideal to have a barrow in with horsie and picking up feet because of the room.

Also my horses tend to be stiller when tied up outside compared to inside- I suppose because inside they're used to doing as they wish.

Its good for them to see whats going on too- they're only stabeled overnight for 12ish hours but thats long enough imo for limited views and not much space!

I was always taught to brush outside so dust blows away in the fresh air.

For farrier, again space because of their tools etc

I wont slip on dirty bedding lol!
