After years of always having a mare in the herd since we've had horses. This year we only have geldings for the first time, what an absolute joy. No squabbling, no punch-ups, all sharing hay, peace and tranquility. GREAT. Can't see me ever getting another mare. No stroppiness, no PMT, no tender abdomens, no days off due to being in season, no squirting like a hussy at anything equine. No looking back.:D:D

geldings are boring :o

and i need a mare to cope with MY stroppiness, pmt, tender abdomen, days off due to season... ok i'll end it there lol!

Mares are amazing! As said a mare will give her heart to you and once youve got that bond she truly will die for you! Havnt yet meet a gelding that has lived uo to the favourite mares in my life!!!

A good mare will give her heart to you!

I so agree with this comment, I love my mare to bits and she loves me just as much. She knows her boundries and is very good with them and yes she may be a pain the ass sometimes for other people but is good as gold with me.

Its her character, we hack she broncs most the way untill she can have a gallpp to strech the legs then broncs some more , she a little loopy but puts in the hard work when it counts.

A little bit like most of us women. A little bit of a tantrum when we want to go but told we cant but when it counts we work hard and do own best. :-)

I have three mares (well one is still a filly really as she's only three ;) ).

no squirting like a hussy at anything equine. One of mine will try to stop and pee at one particular horse that she's rather in love with. :p
No looking back.:D:D Ditto, I love my girlies :)

Over the years I've had mostly geldings, but the two mares I've owned have been fantastic - the current one is simply the best horse I've ever sat on, let alone owned :D

Having said that, I've had a lot of other people's mares on the yard, and frankly wouldn't put up with them if they were mine :( One livery mare has just left after 14 months, and I have to say peace now reigns!

ATM I have 12 horses on the place, including my one mare and a colt. All the rest are geldings, and we all coexist quite happily! As soon as a livery mare arrives, the logistics of yard management become increasingly complicated :D

I've never known a Horse to try so hard for me. She's very honest and all round lovely Horse to be around. Everything I've asked her to do she has done.

She doesn't fight in the field and is bottom of the herd.

I'd always choose mares over geldings. All my favourite horses have been mares and, as others have said, once you've bonded with a mare what a joy they are. Personally I prefer a little more character ;)

That said, old mare is an 'it' (hermaphrodite) and she's a bit special too, but I put that down to her mare like attributes :)

As a YO, I have never ever had problems with mares. Geldings, on the other hand give me loads of problems. I have had several that were too aggressive to be kept with others. At one point, I actually banned any more geldings from coming onto the yard. The ones I have now (bar one that has to be kept separately) are fine and peaceful though.

I've got a mare and a gelding. They're kept in seperate herds and to be honest the geldings are always scrapping whereas the mares are always chilled.

I treat my mare the same regardless if she's in season or not and have never had any problems. :) She's very bold and loves investigating whereas my gelding will spook at a leaf.. ;)

I've had 3 geldings and now have a mare.

She is as honest as the day is long, a very genuine and mannerly sort.
Plus, she gets one of the best turnout fields (with another mare) to keep her away from the geldings, bonus :).

I deal almost exclusively with stallions and mares - and it's all about the big boys for me! Mares, I personally find, have their own agenda and are thinking about boys, babies and food. (just my experiences mainly with broodies)Stallions on the other hand, ask them to focus and give you their all and their could be anything happening in the background and they'd still just be watching and listening to you. (I am lucky to work with amazing stallions though!)

I love my mares, yes they are sensitive and wouldnt tolerate rough handling, but i'd rather that then the geldings Ive owned that seem to just put up with anything and i never knew how they felt, if they were in pain etc. With mares, i feel that they would be quick to let you know if anything was wrong, so the relationship is more open between them and you.

All mares should be banned from livery yards!!!

....that's if I had my own way ;) :D

But I do have a mare and although she has the usual mareish traits she is lovely, they have this appealing soft intelligent nature that a gelding will never have.

I totally agree with this! lol :D I have 4 mares in all but my eldest girlie is 20yrs old and ive had her since she was 4. The bond we have means the world to me and we know each other inside and out or when one of us is having a bad day. I will always favour a mare over a gelding though its nice to have a relaxing, stress free training session with my ID gelding :p

My other gelding acts more like a mare though so dont know where he fits in  lol

I have 2 mares and 1 gelding which I have just bought. I bought the gelding because he has such a sweet nature and could be so easily ruined in the wrong hands, but, I do love my mares much much more. The gelding gives me more kisses, but my mares are more characterful, bolder and answer me back more (which I do like as I know how they are feeling, as another poster pointed out). All that said, I haven't owned the gelding long so maybe things will change in time, but I still think I will prefer my mares :D

You know the saying..........'tell a gelding, ask a mare and discuss it with a stallion'.

My mare is sensitive and I can almost 'think the aid' and she complies. She is honest and lovely and will tell me when she thinks she has done enough, but will also willingly continue when I tell her she has to be joking!
She has a sense of humour for sure.

I do like geldings too and have 2, but you can share your secrets with a mare - they will always listen...

Geldings all the way for me, i have a lovely peaceful little herd! As for boring, well if that's something thats safe, predictable & doesnt have mood swings, ill take boring everytime :)

I totally agree with this in my experience and opinion. Gelding are a bit too predictable for me. My first pony was a gelding and day in day out you knew what you were going to get. I've had around 7 mares since and have found them much more enjoyable. I like the challenge and like a little bit of an attitude which i've never really had with any geldings i have worked with or ridden.

I am always also one for thinking if i have a mare and anything happens at least she will always have a purpose. It would always be a very difficult situation to be left with a defunct gelding to keep.

:) :) :)

Agree with others my current mare is the most genuine horse I have EVER known.

Geldings never give to you 100% as a mare does.

I have a mare, her filly and a gelding they are a very settled.

I always said I'd never have a mare, I love my boy dogs, my boy horses..and boys in general if I'm honest...;). But recently we've had a couple of new additions to the yard and they are such sweet loving kind mares I'm sort of tempted to try having one next!! I had my TB mare only for a few short weeks (bought her just to save from going for meat I was never going to actually 'own' her and rider her) and when I sold her to her loaner recently I was so sad because she was so much more loving and loyal than my lad is!! He loves me for the bucket I hold, where as she was just happy to see me and wanted to be with me.
