why do they do it? (hi vis)

patsie2 (or whatever your name is)- I feel sorry for your horse. Why are you smug about not wearing it?? I expect one day, it may serve you right, but I just hope it is you that gets hurt not your horse. But anyway, not going to waste my breath, clearly you are too stubborn to see someone elses view.

Personally, always wear at least a tabard when out hacking. Never go our without one, and yes, this is around country roads mainly. Having a well behaved horse is nothing to do with it- idiot drivers and blind corners cause far more accidents.

I wonder whether the people on here that are so proud of not wearing hi vis, will still be proud of themselves when they are involved in an accident because they havent been seen, and the driver is done for dangerous driving.
Hi vis doesnt stop the accidents, I know that first hand, but if it saves one life, surely its worth it?
People driving on the realy rural roads almost dont seem to expect coming across anything in the road, so even more of a reason, not less of one to wear it.

Although insurance doesn't require the wearing of hi-viz it would be interesting to see if a damages payment was reduced under contributory negligence if the seriousness of an accident could have been reduced/avoided if the victim was wearing hi-viz gear. Any legal eagles got any ideas?

Coffee Bean, I dont think that I deserve such vitriol, I just dont ride with Hi Vis. I have not been rude to anyone, smug I am not. This thread was started, I thought as a discussion. I leave the smugness to you, your choice to wear it, well good, but until it becomes law I choose not too. As for hoping that I will be hurt, well I am speachless. I thought I was joining a forum where oppinions were shared and aired. I didnt realise If I didnt agree with the majority I should recieve a reply such as yours. If we all just agreed with each other, boring it would be. However, I am not affraid to say how I do things even if I does get you all cross. My horse, my body my choice.

I do hope I wasn't coming across as smug for not wearing it...as stated, I did wear it all the time at previous yards, but now, just for a 2 minute occasional ride down our own private road [in the middle of nowhere at that]....I just don't see the dire need to wear it now for that, that's all. Most accidents I've witnessed first hand, have been from pure idiotic drivers that's all. My mare was clipped by a wing mirror and took it clean off when a driver didn't slow down for her and just whisked past her....previous owner was wearing Hi-Viz then but at the time it didn't make a difference as the driver was just a grade-A *insert word of choice* tbh.

I used to love the days where you could hack through the villages without a worry in the world. Nowadays, I just honestly don't think the roads are safe enough for horse and riders tbh. It only takes that one idiot driver,Hi-Vis regardless, as a lot of posts recently have shown!

poor you Pastie, you didnt deserve such unpleasantness- both you and i live in the middle of nowhere so where is the need for this wretched Hi Vis for you, also as you say, the choice is yours!! if i was still riding i wouldn't wear it either.wearing Hi Vis isnt going to slow down folk on blind bends, so what to do about that? best to rely on the answers of the experts---

which is why hats are a wonderful thing, though it does depend on the height of your hedges granted :)

slightly ot but I do also hope if I were to fall off on my own (not happened yet but) I would be easier to find.

Thank you Rosie!!!!!!! It was a rather unpleasant reply to a very innocuous post.

Its not just the safety on the road, if you fell off when riding on your own, and the air ambulance came looking for you, they would see you so much easier and quicker if you were in hi vis. There are plenty of valid reason that it should be worn, I just dont see that many valid reasons why it shouldnt be.

No, I did not hope for you to be hurt, I just said that I hope it isn't your horse. I think that as riders, we have a responsibility to the horse to make things as safe as possible. (also it's speEchless :) )

But also, you still haven't said why you refuse to wear high vis? I don't understand the statement you are making?

Coffee Bean, I was not being patronising, its all about the people I come across on the roads. I ride out racehorses for a well known trainer in this area, I do it for nothing to keep my eye in as it were. We always thank drivers, wave and smile. Not one of us wears Hi Viz. On my journey home I pass lts of people hi vized up, do they think that because they have made the effort to make themselves visible that they dont need to raise a hand in thanks to the driver that slows down? I am sorry if I have offended you in any way CB, but I found your post completely out of order and excessive in its content.

Pastie, Coffee isn't the only person to think you were sounding smug, no-one including Coffee wishes you ill, we're just struggling to understand the motives behind not taking the safety precautions available to safeguard your horse. You may not care about yourself, which of course is your perogative - but do you care so little about your horse you wouldnt make him highly visable to traffic??

benson I hope you don't find this intrusive you don't have to answer, but cannot remember from your previous posts if you and friend were wearing hi viz?

it also comes in handy with the low flying helicopters from the local navy airbase... no chance of the jets seeing you though but they are gone before they are a problem.

Given the damage a horse can cause to car and occupants if they collide, I include wearing hi-viz on the roads as basic good manners, along with thanking drivers who slow down. There is no excuse for bad manners when riding but if I'm driving I would prefer to meet someone I could see who didn't thank me than someone I couldn't see properly and ran the risk of hitting.

As you say, your choice - it just seems a totally pointless risk to me.

I think that is a good way of putting it,

If I see someone without hi vis when driving I tend to think 'fgs you're not really helping either of us out are you'

this also goes for cyclists and road runners.

Thank you all for your words of wisdom, sorry CB, speechless it is. Now that you have had your say please let it be. I have not abused anyone, killed an old age pensioner or been a hit and run driver. I SIMPLEY dont wear Hi Viz. Please forgive me. There are many threads on this forum that piss me off to, but I dont think that I would be as unpleasant as some of you. It seems to be a very cliquey forum, I hope that all the people I have offended will forgive me! New people will come onto this forums with their own ideas about things, and I think that a good hot blooded discussion is healthy within reason. You all call me smug.

Well Benson I rest my case. I have spoken to you a lot on this forum and my heart is with you, I justhope you find the right horse and can get on with your life.

Thank you :) Couldn't have put it better. pastie still hasn't said exactly WHY she chooses not to, I don't understand why you wouldn't but whatever.

Bizarre Pastie, I don't see where anyone has been unpleasant, in fact you could argue peoples disbelief at your attitude is born from worrying about you, which isn't at all unpleasant.

You have still, despite many requests not explained your reasoning, so I for one am still dumbfounded by you but there we are!

Do you know Coffee Bean you are now begining to get on my nerves. I have said sorry for the most awful faux pas that I could possibly make on this forum. I have told you that I choose not to deck myself out in Hi Viz, I ride and live in the countryside. Is this a good time for you to kick the fallen. Enjoy, hope it makes you feel good.

LOL Pastie are you reading different posts from Coffee than I am, I can't see where she's "kicked the fallen". This place is getting more and more odd by they day I fear!!

"Wretched" Hi viz, mmm, think that about sums up the attitude of certain riders, wish I lived in nowhere land so I could be totally immune to accidents.

Couple of bimbos' yesterday on the road, noses in the air no viz on, didn't thank any cars that passed carefully including me, or smile a thank you to anyone, ignorant or what, mind you they had massive tits, so maybe that was there viz and body protector in one ;), certainly caught the eye of male drivers, not that I noticed of course (clears throat)

I am very bemused about some of the posts here. Can't see people being rude, just asking why the decision not to wear hi-viz.

Honesty time here - sometimes I don't in the village or woods, but know I should. Its not the lack of coolness - I am not a cool person. I do on country roads. I think I should get better habits.

Well no wonder I don't understand then, because that post certainly didn't infer that!

I come from a part of the world where you say what you mean, so I can't keep up with the undertones here!
