We were feeling quite smug and pleased that we were doing dressage to music today and not eventing ,as everything is cancelled.
Then we go up the stables at 7.00 to bring him in and find he has been playing fighting all night and he has pulled a shoe off,DAMN.
Everyday he comes in with his sweetitch rug ripped around the hood as the livery he is out with chews and rips it.Everyday we mend it[its patchwork now with t shirts and mens undies]
We trotted him up and he is sound ,so my daughter has gone off to the show as we hope the surface will do no damage [he has strong feet and the foot is not broken]and we have problems finding any music qualifiers.
Would you have gone to the show?
I don't know what to do about this playing ,the other horse is old and I think it's our horses fault. We have two fields but he doesn't get on with my other horse [they won't put up with his playing]. I could put him out during the day and bring him in at night but he would have to be by himself and I worry he will not be socialized enough to go back out with his friend in the winter. He has an enormous field so shouldn't be bored and is ridden everyday but he is accident prone and the rug is driving us mad [already tried nasty tasting spray on it]
HELP

He's just being a horse isn't he? It's quite nice really that an old horse can still have fun playing with his friends. I know too many horses that have developed problems after being separated to suggest that is a good idea. You could swap one problem for another.
Does he need to wear the sweetitch rug? Does he actually get sweetitch? I ask because I have had a sweetitch sufferer for 3 years now, and managed him without a rug. But a lot of horses wearing sweetitch rugs have them on to keep flies off, but don't actually suffer from sweetitch.

I would have gone to the show too! I am gutted that I couldn't do it, I had it in my diary and had choreographed a test and everything too!

GOOD LUCK!
Have you tried one of those half muzzle things that is supposed to stop them reaching round and grabbing their rugs?

Why don't you put a strip of electric thru the middle of the field and then they could both go out together. They will still be able to play with each other over the fence, but would have to do it a lot more delicatly.

Yes he gets really bad sweetitch and injures himself on the trees if we take it off [he has nearly stopped itching with it on] We have put electric fence inside our fence to stop him rubbing on that but there are some trees in the field.
bbmat; glad you broke your arm now you have said that or we wouldn't stand a chance.lol.A muzzle would be no good as it is the other horse ripping his rug around his face and also marking him quite a lot as well.
His coat looks amazing under the rug but the mending every day is time consuming to say the least and I'm not briiliant with the old sewing machine

ah.... maybe put the muzzle on the other horse!

We would have been doing the Elementary, we got our NFSQ at hartpury end of last year.. You probably will beat me when we meet anyway judging from your results so far!!

Thought about the fence across the field but a bit worried that if electric is not really strong they might get caught up in it.We don't have mains so have to use batteries but may have to try that. Thanks
Might have to spend more money and build new post and rails across field
