I read some of the posts and are quite frankly amazed at some of the incredibly strong opinions voiced on here as fact. And often quite antagonistic. Owners choose to keep their horses in a way which suits them (the owners) but why the attitude if someone else does not agree? Why not allow that other people make different choices and if their horses are happy and doing well, why not?

So let me confess my huge list of sins. My horse is kept on part livery. I clip out my younger horse. I rug accordingly. I shoe him. He is turned out for between 1/2 to a day depending on weather so nope, he does not live out 24 x 7. I didn't pay £300 for him. Yet when I read a lot of these posts it would seem that in some peoples eyes I have committed numerous sins. Oh and the worst thing is... he is a competition horse. One that I enjoy hugely and is great fun.

Can we just lighten up a little here? we are on the forum as horse lovers yet seem incredibly critical if people deviate from a certain path. To read these posts, it would seem that I must have a barefoot, living out horse, unclipped, unrugged and preferably one that cost next to nothing. And that is the only option. Fair play to those who keep their horses like that. I made different choices dependant on my lifestyle and what I want to do with mine. Neither choice is better, just different.

Thoughts? shall I sit back and see what unfurls?!

Your horse your rules..What people do with their animals is up to them..Sadly not everyone thinks the same way and that is what makes this world of ours an interesting place to live..Enjoy your horse and ignore anyone who tells you otherwise..

My horses were all very cheap and are all gorgeous and good jumpers (apart from the mini!). Get annoyed with the elitists on here.
A horse is a horse, whether it cost 100 pounds or 100 grand. I really don't get why people get their bums high in the air over money! Some horses are big, some are small. Some are naughty, some are well behaved. Some are cobs, some are arabs. It's personal preference!

I agree with you, everyone takes different approaches and as long as the horse isn't suffering, no one on this forum should mind!!!

I've only really had good and helpful advice on here luckily but it does make me sad when I see someone being made to feel like they have somehow failed their horse

I guess that's all the fun of the forum

I like the fact that things are so passionately debated here, and yes, it can get very heated, but horses bring out very strong feelings in everyone.

Ok, confession - tonight i somehow forgot to lock the boy's stable. he got out.He ate his neighbours oats straight of the feedbin. Also scared the YO to death, as he was wearing his balaclava/snuggy hood tonight (OMG, I am afraid yes, he does wear one). I am mortified. :o Now if I put a post on about that, I would expect a 50/50 response tbh. I'm just not quite ready for the negative half, as I feel so damned stupid.

How dare you?! :D

I'll join you in the naughty corner.

My 4yr old is fully clipped out, rugged accordingly, stabled at night and sometimes doesn't get out every day if the weather is particularly bad. He's a competition horse. And I carry (and will use) a whip if I need to.:eek:

Despite my blatant abuse, he puts up a marvellous front of looking like a very happy chappy. :p

Its like that in real life, some people have to voice their opinions. At least on forums you can just ignore. Takes all kinds.

My theory is that the gobby ones on here, in RL wouldn't say boo to a goose. It is only due to the relative anonymity that is afforded to users on here (and other forums) that makes them hitch up their judgemental pants and give it both barrels ;)

* Sits back to await anecdotal evidence that my theory is incorrect *

woo hoo.... sane posters still on this forum!... was beginning to think I should steer clear of NL and stick to CR and the dogs!

It doesn't have to be my way or nothing here - that doesn't reflect the threads I read. And there certainly isn't a widespread attachment to barefoot, unrugged etc here. People on this forum keep their horses in all different ways and in varied states of happy mollycoddling.
Threads like this crop up from time to time and to be honest I find them a bit wearing (but then I'm a GOW). Everyone comes on and states in detail how they keep their horses... all their "sins"... as they do every time, and it just proves that there wasn't an issue in the first place.

Nope i am either cinders or an ugly sister both on here and in real life !

Oh golly, strange analogy, that's not me at all. I can rarely be bothered getting into arguments on here but in real life when things crop up that go against the grain, oh you can be assured I keep going until they are sorted out. I'm not a ranty person period; but real life is far more relevant to my life than anything that goes on here so obviously I'm more vocal in real life.

It bothers me a bit too. It's left me confused on more than one occasion, especially when 2 seemingly trustworthy people tell me opposite things and insist their way is the ONLY WAY!

i also feel like this forum is often as you describe it OP! but it makes good reading at times and i like the different opinions and perspectives - i think it helps me carry an open mind!
i wouldnt get involved unless i felt very passionate and could properly fight (fight is the wrong word but ya know what i mean!) my corner but i try to be very conscious to try to behave, act and say things as i would in the real world! majority of the time anything i say/post appears to be ignored anyway  (i tell myself its cos im a newbie lol)

i think the *problem* with the "horseworld" is that there is no right and wrong...everyone is entitled to their opinions and viewpoints and when people dont agree, that can cause friction! its also quite difficult to communicate through text and things can be taken out of context

I suppose the forum is all about opinions , and people express themselves in different ways in real life but it's easier to read a persons manner I think in real life than on the forum.
So some people who express them selves in a very short forthright way can be very sweet people in real life but it's easier to read intent in a real interaction than on the Internet then add to that people posting on the phone while travelling etc etc .
Some people are just argumentative perhaps and somes sense of humor can misfire in print verses real life ( come to think of it my sense of humour misfires all the time) .
I do give thought to the advice I give and would want to think it helps sometimes I enjoy exploring the issues and one thing for sure the forum does help you define what it is you think which is good.
I enjoy it immensely I am not really a my way or no way type of person in any part of my life but I am master of my own little horsey universe here and I do know what I like.
I enjoy holding my line while opinions are explored the only thing I particularily dislike is the things I don't do are cruel type posts I could let myself get wound up by them just because I have seen really cruel things up close and personal but getting wound up is tiring and I don't like getting exhausted ( slurps a bit more wine) .
Heres HHO warts and all just off outside to do my abused stabled equine pals.

This! I once joked that I wanted a foal so I could take cute pictures of it. MY GOD! That exploded in my face and despite saying it was a joke a hundred times, people still thought I was being serious and it caused outrage!! Hahaha!!

I remember that one I think perhaps I missed the irony and thought you were serious sorry if I did I bet you where helpless laughing.

Nah I would say one lucky cob and am sure he will forgive you and just expect that to happen a bit more often. I do agree it is a forum and everyone does have different opinions just happens I am always right.

I was face-palming most of the time! I kept on getting long rants about how I'm going to ruin this poor thing and I kept telling them "That was a joke..." but then they'd start ranting again haha! Good grief, that was an awful thread XD

Watch it! You are not allowed to make your own decisions for your horses on here... Let alone know what's best for them:rolleyes:

I agree with you 100%. Too many people on here get confused between fact and opinion. Not that I am disrespectful to experience, but I think the most experienced and knowledgeable people are the ones who are more open-minded and don't feel the need to ram their opinions down others' throats. The best thing that anyone ever said to me on here, which I remember every day, is that owning a horse is very much like bringing up a child - everyone will do it differently and think their way is the best!

I could be very off the mark as I don't know a lot of posters on here, however this is how it comes across to me (and I certainly could be wrong here!). I think part of the problem on here is that there seems to be many younger members who think they have great equine experience in every equine sphere when really that's pretty rare that someone has experience in every aspect of horsemanship; most people I know (and myself included) tend to have preferred passions (specialist subjects if you like). In horses, as someone said, often there are no right or wrong ways ... however just as often there ARE only right (or safe, correct protocol) ways.

I've never noticed any elitists on here Tinsel Cat  Quite the opposite actually. Seems that most people have horses that cost a couple or 3 grand tops which they are happy with. I've spotted a very small minority of people who have what I would term high calibre horses but they're so quiet and subtle about it that many probably wouldn't notice.

Mostly though, I giggle at a lot of things written on this forum :D I find coming on here a little like reading a quirky, funny magazine filled with weirdos, practical common sense type people, nice people, nasty people, as well as the token total idiots. It's a forum with a wonderful mix if ever there was one!

What I can never understand is why anyone cares about what someone they have never met thinks about how they keep their horse. But then I can never understand why anyone cares what fellow liveries think about how they keep their horse.
Having said that if you post asking for opinions you should be prepared to get some which do not match your own - there is a wealth of knowedge available on here on a wide range of subjects, some people would do well to avail themselves of that knwledge and experience, none of us know everything.

All fair points. And actually, with the one negative reply, I did not put up how I keep my horse to cause controversy!. I was looking at why is it when someone asks for advice, is it that such very strong opinions are offered.. and people really do think that only their way is right. And often if someone has a different opinion, they can be heavily slated which I think is unfair. I do agree that the most vocal posters are often the ones whose experience is very limited. Yes you may have had a horse for 15 years, but if its the one horse, then your experience and knowledge is a lot less than someone else who has cared or ridden a number of horses.

I like to read posts where people have different ideas, different approaches but someone being vitriolic is not going to make me change my mind about how I care for my horses!

I'm pretty gobby in real life too Quirky:p:D
