He may be after plant roots, some of them contain a great deal of 'energy' and others are 'good herbs'. Then again he may just be after salt.

My horse used to eat mud. Now I give him some Codlivermins, its a multi-vit supliment that you put in their feed. He doesnt eat mud anymore and he's got a super shiney coat!

One of mine use to do that!! He started having red cell, and I popped a mineral lick in his manger and a rock salt lick too. He was obviously lacking something as he stopped once he had the above, cut out the red cell, he gets through a lick a month though!!

I know he is lacking in something but wondered if anyone knew what or what minerals or vits i can give him! I thought it might be salt but he wont eat it in his tea or eat a lick!
