well sorry guys, i haven't posted on here for a while and I'm afraid this is just a bit of a rant as i am so angry.
My friend bought a horse in October from a dealer who bought horses over from ireland. She paid the travel expenses only for a very, very under weight TB. Thought to be just starved. the weeks went by and no improvement on his condition. He then started having puss coming from his coronet's and chestnuts. After 3 courses of anti B's the vet decided to investigate further and found he had a very rare condition, sorry can't remember the name but from what i can gather his body was attacking itself. They treated him with steroids but with no luck. The horse got worse and worse and was chewing at his own legs so it was decided he should be PTS. so after 3 months they lost the battle to save him.
The day he was put down, their other beloved TB mare who they had had for some time stood on a nail, not badly, went into the foot about 1cm. She seem OK but quickly went lame. vet was called, put on anti B's to be safe. By the weekend the was colicing with pain, 2 emergency vets later and a slightly more comfortable mare but not weight barring.
so last sunday (9th) farrier and vet meet at the yard. discovered the abscess, happy days???? no, mare still didn't get better, still on 3 legs. Vet was checking every other day, gave stronger anti B's, still Beau did not get better. My friend had serious doubts it was still an abscess so went over her vets head and spoke to an equine hospital who said bring her straight in. Beau went in on Saturday to find the nail had burst the navicular bursa (spell?). My friend begged the vets to save her but said there was no amount of money in the world that would save her at this late stage. She was nerve blocked, my friend brought her home and let her out in the field for a roll (her favourite past time) she was cleaned up and PTS this morning.
My friends are besides themselves and i can't help but think why??? why do the good people have this happen to them??? they have lost both their horses in 3 weeks. It just not on. sorry for the completely random post and terrible spelling, just wanted it off my chest a bit. I will be back to their yard tomorrow to see them again but feel that this is going to take some time to get over.
RIP Beau, you were beautiful and much loved by all
(this mare meant so much to them that i was ordered to ensure she was waiting for them at their wedding)
