Forgot about yard politics! So happy I have mine at home and never have to deal with this - so stressful. My advice to OP would be to look out for a private yard - approach yards and ask around… they were the best yards I was ever on as a livery.

Maybe it's regional, but 'cash in hand' means non declared income in these parts.

We've had this argument before pn the forum. "Cash in hand" is a term used on a number of government Web pages and all it means is that people are paid cash. Lots of people only use it if that are talking about illegally avoiding paying tax, but people paid cash in hand frequently declare it and also very often don't earn enough to pay tax.

Here also, but I make a point of paying cash whenever I can. (Not for huge things obviously as I don't want to carry thousands of dollars about the place in suitcases, but I mean for any reasonable purchase (farrier/lunch/coffee... come to think of it, groceries too, because I am not a fan of paying by card for this, that and the other. What I spend my money on is my business (friendly tone here), not the business of companies and such that want to know everything about us, PLUS, there are fees attached when using a card and someone has to pay.)
