I was always wondering, why is it that some people have 2 horses (or more)? If you have two what is your reason for that? Really really curious :)

I wanted to keep my New Forest at home- but didnt want him on hos own so got a companion who turned out be te just as nice and in fact with better paces. I didn't actually want two originally! ;)

I had two some time ago now.

I had my pony for 15 years and he was in semi retirement. I knew if he passed away that I would forever be looking for a horse that was like him and it would just never happen.

For that reason, I bought another horse who I liked for his own merits.

As it happens, I lost the pony 18 months later and I don't think I'd have carried on with horses if I didn't have the other one, I was heart broken for a very long time :(.

I'm not sure I could have 2 ridden horses as it would just be too time consuming for me.

I have a 10 yr old tb mare, who i adore, and have done a bit of everything, but I have always wanted a horse to back and train myself so i got a raw youngster, to bring on, so i got a 4 yr old tb mare.

I have one that I bought as a 2yr old (now 5) and another someone asked me to have, I do differnt things with my two, although they won't be a number 3, I wouldn't have the time or money to do 3 justice.

Besides you need a spare oss, just in case one breaks or other is utterly useless :D

My horse couldnt be ridden anymore so i just had her as a pet for years - an amazing horse at my yard came up for sale and i had the money so i went for it - 1st horse can now be ridden so i now have 2 in work - i would like to sell one as having 2 is tough when you work full time and have a relationship but finding it hard to part with either!

I play polo so I need 2 horses just to play a full game - but ideally I'd have over 4. Polo is broken down into chukkas (7 minute segments) of which there are 4 in a low goal game. A horse cannot play back to back chukkas for welfare reasons but they can alternate chukkas. I am not hard on my horses and though they work hard they do not come of the pitch exhausted, so at the moment 2 is fine for me - though as I improve I need to start saving money for more. The top pros will sometimes have 20 horses each for a match!

I have more than one because "it just sort of happened" my companion shettie has now got a companion newforest who has just been backed. And my main horse is in foal so I will have another new arrival soon.

I`ve got two because both me and my OH ride...we are planning on getting another two when we move in a few months, both of mine are youngsters and i`m bringing them on slowly so i want something already experienced and i can have a nice ride on, not that Ayla and Roxy arent nice a ride theyre fab hackers but are only now being schooled and its going to be a long time before they`re schooled to what i want and jumping courses confidently. I wouldnt get another 2 unless I had my own place because of cost etc

But it's a bugger if / when they BOTH decide to go lame at the same time :p

As mine have

I have one who is 14 now, and has become OH's hack and learning ride (FB is ex riding school and only patient up to a point, but he does respond to correct aids and so is good for OH, who is a novice, as he can tell when he is riding properly).

And I have Ari, beautiful, Ari who is 6. As green as a cabbage and needing a lot of schooling, who we bought to do endurance with.

And they are both footsore since moving from the soggy north to the desert south. Fortunately, their Easyboots arrived today.

wow guys, it's interesting! must be expensive to keep two though! I always thought I was dreaming of one and only, but now when I've got him I keep checking out the seller's website and a crazy thought of having two is growing on me :) it's not going to happen though in near future, not realistic, and I am well happy with the horse I have :)

When I was competing always used to have 3 - One experienced / "diesel pony" to do the higher level stuff, one novice with "potential" that would hopefully end up doing the higher level, and one project to sell on and hopefully fund the others! May sound a bit harsh but I couldn't have afforded to keep competing like I did without some sort of income coming in.

Because I want 2?

I actually have 3 but one is out on loan (my older schoolmaster boy).

I'm not sure you need a reason to have 2 instead of 1 as long as you can care for them both- same as people having 2 children I guess.

I bought my youngster at 11 months old, and as a companion a 2yr welshie. I also have a 5YR TB mare who is my project horse :) the youngster is 3 in May so will be starting some very light work with her, hoping to have her lightly backed and riding away the end of next year and then bring her back into work as a 4yr old.
The TB is perfect for jumping / dressage etc and am hoping the cob will be good for hunting/hacking - see how she goes! my mum will also be hopefully living closer by then so am hoping we will be able to go hacking together :D

Because each one has a different use I need it for, what I can't do on one I can do on another :)

Ditto - I have one established horse and one project.
My established horse doesn’t really get on with hunting (it blows his brains a bit) so my second horse is (hopefully) going to be a nice little all round fun horse that I can go and do a bit of everything on, including hunting and xc (whereas the other one is a bit more technical! )

I have 5!!! though not totally by choice.

I had three (an ex-racehorse who I hoped would do dressage but never did, a connemara for RC activities and my older connemara for happy hacking for my mum) had to have the older connemara put down but the TB would throw a hissy fit when I left him behind to take the other to a show.

Got a NF last July to replace the old connie so back up to 3. Then 2 weeks later found out my Godmother had lost her 19 year battle against breast cancer (aged just 58) and I inherited a 2 yr old Dartmoor and a 14 yr old arab!!

Have found the arab a lovely loan home.

Did have the TB on loan as a companion but he's just come back so now looking at another companion / happy hacking home.

Have just started to think about loaning out the Connie as he wants a quieter life now which would leave me with the New Forest and the Dartmoor and then space to get a horse to do a bit of eventing on.

If it all goes to plan I'd be amazed!! Very difficult to find them good homes - if you know any one who might be interested let me know!!

Because daughter's first pony is just too useful as a companion / load horse / riding instructor to be sold.

Because daughter's second pony is too much of a liability to pass on - and he has given us so much fun that he deserves to spend the rest of his days where he feels safe and secure.

Because daughter's first horse is so good and although she's far better than I need I couldn't replace her with anything that fitted my requirements better. I don't use all her abilities to the full, but I don't think she cares, although she would love to do more jumping.

Because when daughter's first horse broke dramatically in the first two weeks of us having her she needed something to ride - and he's fun and beautiful and when daughter is home it's nice to be able to ride out together.

Because when I sold my adored AA mare I knew that I would miss her so much so I bought the new one the day after I delivered the AA mare - she was a cheap form of therapy after losing my childhood dream.

So that's how I've ended up with five . . . so far.

I love Phil to bits, but have learnt from my mistakes. He is very genuine but can be spooky and isn't the most straightforward of horses. I love the accomplishments we've made, small as they may be. BUT, if I had the money and time I would definitely get another. Whether a cob or a ID type, it would be the sort of been there, done that, safe, sane, sensible, does what you ask sort of horse. One because I could hack with someone and two because sometimes it would be nice to ride a 'normal' horse. I'd like to be able to switch :o

I bought my mare to event and show jump, whilst she is physically capable of doing both well she really prefers to party in a crowd so I now team chase and hunt her. As a result of changing her discipline she is a much happier horse and I can now get a good round of show jumping out of her but not if she has to do this every week.

I still wanted to show jump but would probably not have bought a second horse had a three year old (now four) not come up for sale who I had known from birth. I had never brought on a youngster before but the YO promised she would help me so now I have a second who was bred to show jump and hopefully will in due course

I am lucky, I have a lot of help and could not cope with one let alone two without the YO who is a very good friend who I have known for years. For me having two horses has allowed me to enjoy my mare for what she likes to do and excels at, but also to do what I want (sadly I don’t excel at it).

ive got 3.
because thats how many i want!

one is my older mare who is semi retired and i wont be parted from
another is her 2006 filly i bred now coming into work
and a 7 year old i had on loan to ride whilst i was waiting for the filly to come of age, but i got offered for sale!

I have 2. started off with one mare who we kept at livery who is a bit of a pain cos shes a hyper tb whos had a bad start in life and wont just chill! so we basically share her between me (i compete and train) my sister (does hacking and some jumping) and my mum (for cuddles and will start riding when we get a menage) .
So i wanted a youngster, blank canvas, to train for dressage and also as a companion for my other mare. cos they live at home and my mum and sister help out its no extra work and not that much extra cost.
looks like we'll have to get another as well to keep my mare company when i take my youngster to shows next year *sigh* ;)

As one is a 14.1hh and i'm 5'9! So i've kind of outgrown him now. And hes nearly always broken! He can't jump either due to an old injury.

The other also seems to be nearly always broken!

wehave 4, hubby's hunter, a well bred pacer that is in foal, elderly brother to said hunter, and our 13.3 welshie(Aged) which was the childrens eons ago. nothing will go from here til their dying day.

I have 4. Castor who is 13.2hh and did loads for me but couldn't BE which is what I wanted to do. COuldn't bar to part with him but bought Jamboree to event. She has all the talent in the world but eventually realised she isn't brave enough to event properly. Love her to bits so couldn't possibly sell her. Petra was bought for other half but got navicular so retired. She helps keep Jamboree sane and is the lovliest horse I have ever met. Whilst she is happy can't bear to have her PTS. Finall Marley who is 6 and proving an exciting prospect. I am knackered and skint but love them all far too much to be any other way :o
